THI Theoretical Faster 0xA Mainland Using Hacked Switch Activation

- I show a theoretical faster way to reach the mainland 0xA in THI, which uses a hack where I can activate the ! switch remotely with L. Activating the switch remotely allows us to get into a position where the box walls push us underground, and from there we can swim to the mainland. I'm documenting this finding in the hopes that someone can figure out how to do this clip in the vanilla game, which would save time on THI ABC stars. But unfortunately, I've been unable to figure out a way to do it.

Hope you stay safe. Don't want Nintendo to get the wrong idea from "hacked switch" in the title

took me too long to realize the crux of the issue isn't the ability to activate it at 0:05 , but the ability to reactivate it whilst falling at 0:18
Of course the question is, can anything other than Mario push the button? Seems like that's the only way to set this up.
Maybe somehow clone Mario or his hitbox lmao
@@LalitoTV This is Mario 64, not Mario 128!
no. like most other n64 games, sm64 doesn't have that kind of physics engine.
Or can something other than the button's crate push Mario to clip him into that wall
@@LalitoTVloning Mario crashes the game. I know this from messing around in STROOP.
It isn't possible anyway, since Mario's always loaded.
It's interesting how similar Speedrun/TAS content is to academic mathematics. This is a lemma that could one day be part of a groundbreaking proof, or it may end up just being a neat footnote, but it adds to the body of knowledge either way.
Pannen's Lemma XIII.
@@aloysiuskurnia7643 does that make. Pannen Number the SM64 equivalent of an Erdos Number?
@@BeefinOut well, it depends if there is a more popular (any) game theorycrafter or not. I can't think of one right now.
But Erdös is not the most popular methematician either lmao
@@aloysiuskurnia7643 its not that erdos is the most popular mathematician (that honor is 150% euler). But that erdos was one of the most prolific modern mathematicians so basically everyone has a very short chain of collaborations to him.
This essentially *is* a branch of mathematics. A niche one, for sure, and maybe not an "academic" branch in the sense of being taught at academies, but I don't see why it shouldn't count.
I imagine no other objects can press the switch for you
Doesn't the grabbable box in BoB activate the gate switch under the mountain entrance if it slides onto the button? I get there's no box available here, but that could be a starting point to look at what could do it
looking at old cloning video v=Qn-IleqOlV0 , it looks like cloning a switch while activated causes it to repeatedly "press itself" after each expiration. although perhaps that time window between activations might be too microscopic to get mario to fall into position? (also it's untenable if there's no cloning opportunities)
@@mikef.795 IIRC the only grabbabe item is the Huge Island Koopa shell from the beach Koopa, which is inaccessible from the Tiny Island spawn
You know, I love this channel so much. I subscribed to the main one back in 2016, when the half A press vid was going around, and I was just obsessed with the video and how in depth the game was. I was only 15 and I was so excited about doing well in my math classes, so I got into other math stuff as well. I found your second channel and started fanatically watching everything you posted. Flash forwards to now, almost 8 years later… in college, I’ve taken lots of strange courses. Quantum introduction courses, proof writing courses, all kinds of stuff. I got a chance to work for the math library and teach other students calculus in a fun way, and to connect the learning, I’d say stuff like “it’s kind of like speedrunning, or those pannenkoek videos, if you know those.” But It kind of occurred to me while watching this video that I would’ve never gotten so into math in the first place if you didn’t post these over the years. Last week, a professor introduced me to a quantum physicist so I could hopefully get involved with adjusting lasers and BBO crystals to quantum entangle individual photons. I really don’t know if I’ll get accepted yet for the opportunity, but I guess I’m just feeling sentimental. Thanks, man. Your videos mean a lot to me.
way to brag
jokes aside, good luck with your career.
Seeing this channel post is always a treat.

I like that "ROM hack" could either be in the more traditional sense or in the "recompiled the RE'd source code to add this feature" sense
I wish more games were torn this widely open

@@Spidapida006 it wasn't decompiled, it was reverse engineered.

So by this point, how long would a full 120 star 13 A-press run be based on all of the strats that have been found thus far?
55 hours and 10 minutes, give or take
don't think a final castle route movement has been established but it would be an integral part
@@katari8604in the grand scheme of the run, I don’t think castle movement would add up to all that much lmao.
@@gamerboygaming enter the secret aquarium
Most of the castle strats included in the TAS, the only differences would really be just Picking up where the last star left off. However RNG manipulation would be very different
Ohhhh thats sick. Could it be possible for mario to be moving just fast enough so on one frame he's hit the switch and on the next underneath it?
I'm quite sure stepping on the switch resets your vertical speed and places you on the ground
@@Henrix1998 that's unfortunate
Do you know if VSC let’s you clip underground? Because that might work in that case
@@Vivers01 I don't believe so, as VSC only gives you, positive vertical speed, (upwards speed)
@@Vinnie64 I think I remember a clip of VSC being used to fall faster, but I could be wrong
Ooo, this would be a really neat addition to the abc run if an alternate way of clipping or pressing the button could be found!

L Button Challenge
you can actually beat all of sm64 without the L button! In fact, in vanilla sm64, the L button does nothing :) (same with the d-pad)

Finally, pannenkoek uploaded a new video.
BROOO I was just thinking it had been a while since we had a Pannen upload
amazing work
Can ledge grab activate the switch? There's no way to conserve the speed while ledge grabbing tho I think
Can you explain what changes about the situation when you activate the switch by pressing L? It seems like there's plenty of time to get into whatever position you want.
it's the switch press at 0:17 that can only be done with L
wake up babe, new uncommentatedpannen video dropped!
Why doesn't activating the switch vanilla and then doing the strat work?
you have to activate the switch while *below* the switch, letting the freshly-spawned boxes push you through the wall there. You can see it happen at 0:18.
That's what I was wondering. Looks like you activate the switch with L very close to the actual button. So I don't quite understand why it couldn't just be pressed by Mario?
Is it because the switch has to be activated again so that Mario ends up inside the boxes and allows for the clip?
Oh yeah that's definitely why.
@@unspeakablevorn Oh I understand mow. Thanks for the explanation!
How come the switch needs to be activated remotely for this to occur?
this is a no A press run
@@thecrazyinsanity You normally activate the switch by just stepping on it, I know this is a no A press challenge
mario on switch = mario not pushed by boxes because boxes are at a different location than switch
i wish i could play rom hacks how did you download the rom hack app to do Mario 64 rom hacks?
The idea of being pushed into the wall to access the water isn't a lost cause, even if the boxes to the button won't do the trick. Is there anything else that could push you through it? While I am nowhere near as knowledgeable as the ABC crew, Considering mario can interact with the button like a floor, odds are the rest of the button has similar geometry to that of which you've discussed in the past. Maybe you could get the button to push you in when approached at the right angle? Considering how it changes angles as its pressed and how much of an effect that had on the pendulum's geometry in TTC, maybe there's some random part of the button's geometry that gets changed partway through the animation into a wall and that can be used to push you in.
Wait, I'm confused. If you guys can now reach the mainland without using a star dance clip, can't you save an A-press for the 8-red-coin star?
Just a thought, but this might be possible with a really large amount of speed, if you landed on the button one frame and ended up in the correct position the next. That said, who knows if that's possible.
Forgive my ignorance but why can’t we press the switch normally again?
Because Mario has to be next to the wall under the switch while it is being pressed in order to perform the desired wall-clip.
@@E-102_Gamma oh duh I thought the problem was doing it the first time lol
What else could you learn about a game from 1996?

I can beat the game in 0xA presses when I use a hack that makes the L button take me to bowser in the sky
Whens the BitFS update :)
can't you just use the pipe to the huge island and swim to the mainland?
HUGE
Someone has to figure it out!
why does it matter, why can't you just go there normally?
just a time improvement, which opens up the possibility of thi being a place you can more quickly get stars in a future 70/120 abc run (or in the case of the 70 tas, potentially making it viable to get stars their in the tas)
This got posted while I was in the middle of Bismuth's ABC video
nice
How many A presses were in the past strat, and how much faster is this one?
also banger vid
It’s already 0x.
It's already 0x to get to the main land. Either with a 100 coin star (takes a couple of minutes to clone enough coins) or by manipulating tiny goombas (new strat, maybe half the time)
Assume I'm stupid. Why can't he just press the button normally with Mario
In short, it's because he needs to be on top of the button to press it, but simultaneously under the button by the wall when the boxes spawn. It's visually seamless here, but when the blocks spawn again at 0:18 that's the manual press of L to force the button press. Mario needs to be down there to be pushed through the wall by the blocks, so unless some shenanigans or a perfect position are found, he can't also be the force that presses the button
@@Matsokune thanks a lot for the reply and explanation
It's as theoretical as time travel
A sad smiley face? Actual emotion in Pannen text? So this must have been super disappointing.
Hi!
Maybe a brute force script could find something? I would think there's some string of imputs that manages to get you in the perfect spot at the right time.
The main issue in that Mario has to be in the position next to the wall when the button gets pressed, which is outside of the button's hitbox. Something else has to hit the button, or another clipping mechanism has to be used
@mathphysicsnerd Ah, just watching it I thought the clip was caused by the timer running out, not the button being pressed again. In hindsight that doesn't make much sense, lol.
