- In the United Kingdom and former British colonies, a Victorian house generally means any house built during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). During the Industrial Revolution, successive housing booms resulted in the building of many millions of Victorian houses which are now a defining feature of most British towns and cities.

Each house comes with it's very own footsteps in the attic at 3AM and voices in the empty cellar.
That's funny....and you could be right. We were in the Shingle one playing "Hide and Seek", running up and down the front and rear stairs cases a lot. Many times, doors would open or slam shut. But as an adult, I now think it was only the nice breeze moving through the house from the opened windows during the summer months.
@@wingspan9842 I agree with your positive thoughts Mr. Span, but sometimes I also still feel scared when I am alone at home when I suddenly hear my door closing itself..

They're not only beautiful. they're also tough bastards. Among wood-framed houses, they take violent tornadoes the best or nearly the best. Living near Joplin, I know this.

You don't gotta be rich my friend just a little save, my plan is to buy a victorian home and restore it myself for the most part. I might have to move where housing is cheaper but God willing this will come true.
Wow ....I love all of the old Victorian homes....once upon a time that was my dream home style to live in (queen Anne being my favorite of them all)...however don't think I'll ever see that dream a reality but still love to look at pictures of inside and out. Thank you

I want one as well, I might have to leave my state to find one where housing is cheaper then restore it myself, or at least the thing I know how to do, it takes time and some risk but with a little wisdom and love you can do it.

2022,....Great video, very helpful in describing the styles I like. I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio near an older neighborhood, there were areas called "Millionaires Row". Cleveland's earliest wealthy industrialists built huge houses away from their factories. The factories were in an area called The Flats,...a lower land area that surrounded the winding Cuyahoga River, which was an entry point off of Lake Erie. Ore and coal ships would slowly wind their way down the snaky Cuyahoga River to where the steel mill were. 10 miles away or farther, was where they built their mansions. Parts of the area named Shaker Heights, was and is still filled with mansions, those rich industrialists built. Many different styles of Victorian houses are there. We lived about 10 miles east of Shaker Heights,.....in newer suburbs, built in the 1920, 30s, 40s and 50s. We lived in a house built in 1946,....it was brick clad,...2 stories plus an attic. It had a slate roof as did all the houses on our street. Most of the houses were not, all brick. Most were brick (veneers) or clad. We drove past those mansions every day from our jobs in the city or our shopping districts. In my teen aged years, my mother and I would go to estate sales, held in some of the mansions. We got to explore them, see how they were laid out. There were always servant's quarters, maids and butlers rooms. Back staircases for the servants to use. Dumb waiters, were common, ( small elevators for sending food or laundry up or down to the upper floors) & old style intercom systems,..like primitive phones so the home owners could summon their wait staff and maids & butlers.

I'm very much drawn to these beautiful homes as I was very lucky to experience happiness living as a child in both the Second Empire, then later to a hugh Shingle home until most of middle school. It completely went down hill after that. But I remember those days and would love to be able to own and maintain one for myself.🥰🙏🏽

I read somewhere that Victorian homes became unpopular because more common people where able to have simple Victorian cottages that offered some ornate details in the craftsmanship but with out the pricey price tag so the rich started to consider the Victorian home design as declasse’ and began gravitating toward different architecture like the craftsman style or Italian or French chateau designs
Unless the property is in top condition, all of these homes, including the Craftsman, Italian, and French designs, will have a Pricey Maintenance Tag. Although you have both working fireplaces and radiator heating, keeping them warm during winter was expensive. On the other hand, except for some smaller Second Empire designs, most of these homes rarely had the need for central air. If you could handle the winter bills, you were pretty much cleared during the rest of the year.
Unfortunately, today's declining society, may force one to have an AC system installed, or bar the windows and doors in order to secure the safety of the home during the warmer months.

2022....In 1977 I moved from Cleveland, Ohio to Columbus, Ohio. Columbus has great Victorian housing, neighborhoods. Like Cleveland, the wealthy built their mansions, in a few areas outside of the industrial areas. There wasn't as much industry in Columbus,..not like Cleveland. No steel mills, but there were manufacturers of products, farm equipment, buggies, maybe even some automobiles, small companies that failed early on. There were companies that manufactured railroad cars, and couplings, and wheels. Bulldozers and cranes,...like Case brand.
