Brent takes us through another architectural style: The Queen Anne Victorian Style which included features such as a wrap around porch, copper on the roof, sandstone, marble, and bricks. Brent also points out the pitches on the roof, the ornamentation, and the over-the-top and victorian features. The reason they built this way during this time was because they could. Why? Because these additions were handmade with machines, not purely by hand. The machines made it easier.
Brent will give us a deep dive into this style.

There's a reason why you don't see Queen-Anne revival homes, the sheer complexity, creativity & work put into them is far beyond what most contemporary architects & builders are willing to do.
Certainly more than the typical buyer would be willing to pay for at least... Id say fault lies not with builders, but with changes to our society as a whole, supply sourcing, and the expectations of the average consumer.
It’s too bad because back then it wasn’t all about money 💰 it was about people taking pride in their work and they built them to last not the cheap homes they make that they charge millions of dollars for now to have someone actually take pride in their build this day and age so now you pay an architect 100 times the price now for this kind of build and the average home built today you are charging a million dollars for homes built cheap materials and garbage for the end product so you are paying big bucks for homes that don’t have good foundations all the way to the roof and interior and exterior of the home so people back the. Who had a mansion got their money worth but not this day in age now their built cheap and want a fortune for them what a just joke about homes now being built 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😢😢😢😢😢

Along with the beauty of this house is the fact the houses built back then we’re built to last and frequently outlast the more contemporary architecture. They took a long time to build. Today’s house goes up fast with cheap materials that require constant repairs. We need to go back to those days!
That's true I wish these older styles would come back but right now modern and futuristic is what's tending in the architecture carrer and they don't want to change. During these times we have the technology to create great designs when back in the day it was more labor intensive. I think the reason why is becuase money, lack of craftsman, architecture today wants to create a more sustainable type of architecture becuase of the problem of global warming, but vernacular architecture is sustainable. Architecture today praises more the technology aspect rather than the nature aspect, maybe that's why.

We no longer have "unlimited" access to old growth wood. Some tree varieties are nearly extinct.
I'm getting a queen Anne house when I'm older doesn't even need to be a big house. They are just so cool looking.
It makes sense that they were skeptical of electricity. This was the time when Thomas Edison's direct current (DC) electricty was still in use and causing house (and even city) fires all across the nation. This finally changed when DC was soundly challenged and put to rest by Nikola Tesla and his much safer alternating current.
As a Serb, I know the part about Tesla.
While that is true, DC is still being used today - mainly in vehicles and smart devices. There are also companies who are using High Voltage DC for long distance electrical transfers due to it being more stable and more efficient than AC (along with recent tech allowing for DC to also be able to shift between higher and lower voltages).
What a magnificent home! Craftsmen certainly knew their trades back then! We have lost so much ability since!
You can blame industrialization for that, the most beautifuls garments are quality materials handmade taking a lot of effort and time to make not something made by machine with cheap materials
@@lemonysnicket3153 It's amazing anyone can even afford to build such a home back then. It was mostly handwork compared to prefabricated and CNC made components. Today, it would be obscenely expensive to build even for a well heeled individual.
Craftsman houses are ever my favorite style, but I really love Queen Anne Victorians. And Gothic. And Italianate. I grew up in a folk Victorian Queen Anne Style. That's probably why.

My mother arrived in Ft. Worth fresh off the farm in Big Spring to attend TWU (Texas Wesleyan today) as an 18 year old in 1920. She became best friends with a student from Roanoke, Judith Bourland, through whom she met my father on Valentine's Day 1921 and married in her home on July 25, 1923. Judith, who never married, taught many years in Ft. Worth and we would make two or three trips to visit her each year and I grew to love Ft. Worth as much as my mother did. She bought her last home on Stanley Ave. in the Glencoe Terrace neighborhood in 1959. You turned onto Glencoe Terrace off Forest Park Blvd., climbed to the end of Glencoe where in dead ended into Stanley and you could only turn left. Her house was a pretty gold brick house built in 1931, second from the end of the street on the left side. Sadly, she lived her last years in assisted living and passed away in 1988 at 87. My mother passed away in 1997 at 94. I remember seeing this gorgeous home on one of our trips and always wanted to see more of it!

@@victorianhomejournal4043 You're welcome! Here is a home in Waco, TX at 1503 Columbus. It was either built in 1889 or 1892 depending on what source you access. It is right across the street from a house where my parents' friend Enid and Willie B. Wilie lived and I was impressed with it from the time I first saw it when I was five in the late 40's! I would always stand and admire it and see what I could through the always curtainless window on the second floor facing south. I've never been in it, but would love to see it inside. It's been in the same family since 1917. I love driving around the Historic Ft. Worth area. I've lived here all my life and those homes are just stunning.
I bought a Victorian home in Indiana, not as big nor full of details as this one, but the wrapped around porch is what sold me.

Servants worked 65 hour weeks. 7 am until 9:00 pm most days. Half a day off on Sunday. I love these old houses too. But I would not have wanted to be a Servant working in one. Not for anything.

America has such beautiful historic homes all over. Victorians have never been my favorite because of the dark mood many have which, of course, are beloved by so many people. However, the Queen Anne style is magnificent!!
When I was growing up I was born and spent most of my childhood and a beautiful queen and Victorian home I loved the big towers we had several stained glass windows but when I was maybe 12 or so we had to move because my parents got divorced my mom said she really wanted to keep it but with the divorce it was no longer affordable she said that for a while there she was thinking about going and buying the house again after she got situated but by that time it was the early 2000s and everything cost more than it did in the early 90s and the house was too expensive and then she also let me know that these actually require a lot of upkeep because they are very prone to weathering so it's almost like annually you're going to have to replace the paint the wood and everything outside so she couldn't afford it she said that it was not so expensive in in the 1980s and 1990s but the 2000s made it way out of her budget. It was a beautiful home and it's such a shame that the people that live there now they don't take care of it at all basically it looks like an old Victorian tweaker house they don't even take care of the yard or the trees or the bushes so everything's all overgrown too but when my family lived there they took care of it.

Its not factually correct, and there is nothing particularly compelling about the video. Its just another nice tour of a very pretty house. I personally find the comments more interesting than the content itself.

It has been my lifelong dream to own a Queen Anne Victorian home. Everything about them is perfect. Unfortunately I never became a railroad tycoon or oil prospector, so it's not an option for me.
Looks similar to our home, the use of different species of wood on the main floor is amazing. Our home was born in 1899 and thank God the former generations didn't paint any of the beautiful wood. The 3rd floor is less magnificent than the first and second floors but its really fun to look out the circular windows down at the smaller house next door. The home across the street from ours is also a good example. When you look out the windows you wonder how many people have looked out these same views.
Why don't we have the industrial capacity or desire to create these wood details?
And we've used up all the quality old-growth wood.
Why? Because we don't need it. Are you super rich that can afford a house that big and pay all the people needed to take care of it? Most of humanity can't. Do you see programs like these showing the living space of poor people at that time? Yeah, that's for a reason. Glad they preserve some of those luxurious places, but times changed.

An old Victorian mansion's which interior wasn't "modernized" or with all the complex wood patterns and walls painted white. It's a fucking miracle.
The “help” areas are great in my opinion...more interesting than just being beautiful.

That first door with a change to paint rather than stain/shellac was the distinction between company and family. Similar on second floor: family only with servants or help only passing through that space.
Interesting that the "helps" quarters were done up in white. Today white interiors is all the rage

Can anybody tell me what stone that is? My initial thoughts are granite would have been used...but the colour tells me it most likely isn't.

I got married at the Ball-Edelman Mc Farland House on 7/7/07. It was a beautiful backdrop for the happiest day of our lives(aside from our kids’ births). It’s even more beautiful in person!

Detroit, as rundown as it became, has beautiful examples of 19th century architecture. Some of it has been beautifully preserved, but of course, much of it has been lost to abandonment, White flight and declining economic opportunity, plus incredible high levels of violence from the 80s until now.
Poverty creates atmosphere for crime rates to be high in any state or city all over the world and Iam sure Detroit has many mansions that need to be saved and not demolished

Actually in the Midwest, the Queen Anne Victorian style persisted until 1910-12...even 1920.
I’ve seen quite a few, and now live in one c 1905. Woodwork is not painted! I have pocket doors, stained glass, curved glass, a wraparound porch, and the fancy painted wood floors where each is different. It was wired with electric and is a 1-1/2 story Bungalow. The floor plan says “ Modern.” LOL

Absolutely correct! This is a gorgeous house, but the video is clearly made by a contractor or realtor, not an architect, historian or someone who actually studied building design. I have such a peeve about this, mostly because the Queen Anne style played such a pivotal role in early Revival era design.

Considering I grew up in something very similar, I don't understand all the hyperbole. To me, it's all normal. I was raised to think a person's home should reflect their personality - meaning, each home is different, as was the case in Winnetka.

I wouldn't so much call it over the top, rather, intended to last. They were meant to be a legacy for generations, though that is not how things went for very long.
Nowadays, houses aren't meant to last very long at all. They're more considered more disposable, like most everything.
Your style description is incorrect. Queen Anne lived in the early 1700s. Queen Victoria was alive in the 2nd half of the 1800s. Its like calling a house an Abraham Lincoln Nixonian House. That makes no sense. Either it is a Queen Anne Revival or it is late Victorian. Victorian means from the time of Queen Victoria. It makes no sense to call something "Queen Anne Queen Victoria". The description Queen Anne is also used for furniture, not architecture.
Queen Anne just refers to the type of stylization given to the Victorian house and is simply a specific type of Victorian house built during the Victorian era. Just like second empire, Gothic revival, stick Eastlake, and folk are other types of Victorian houses along with Queen Anne. Don’t hurt yourself

The phrase "Queen Anne" in architecture has absolutely nothing to do with the historical figure, nor does it bear any relationship to her era.
In any case, this is largely an across-the-pond confusion. "Queen Anne Revival" is a term used in the UK, but not in the US. And since, as I said, it has nothing to do with the actual Queen no matter what we call it, this is a difference with about as much importance as whether or not we chuckle when someone says "fanny pack."

Verandas and porches in American Architecture is strongly influenced by African architecture.
How can you have a QUEEN Anne and QUEEN Victorian in one? It is either one or the other.
You can have a revival, but not an actual QUEEN Anne , during another monarchs reign . Come on guys.
Why are you mis-educating people???? Queen Annes are NOT Victorian... This is lazy reporting. Calling Queen Anne style "Victorian" erases the role that Queen Annes actually played architecturally, *AS A RESPONSE TO AND REJECTION OF* the decorative nonsense of Victorian homes. Queen Annes were all about scaling back the gingerbread to showcase the beauty of natural, quality materials and craftsmanship. Queen Annes represent a NEW approach to building that would usher in the Arts and Crafts movement. It is perhaps more accurate to say not that Queen Anne homes are part of the Victorian style, but rather that Queen Annes were a Belle Epoch (Gilded Age) era answer to Victorian building.
