I cannot hear FM too many times. It is my favorite of all the Steely Dan songs, and I love ALL of the Steely Dan songs.

They say Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band. Such silky smooth funk!

That's Walter soloing on guitar - he had a uniquely spare yet bluesy style, and hey he helped write those wonderful key changes so he knew how to ride them. :-D I love how he and Donald took the "write a movie outro" brief and made it theirs - yes there's strings and other little movie-soundtrack touches but the groove and style and snark is all theirs.

No wasted sounds, everything seems to fit perfectly, like the sax in the middle and the bongos sprinkled in at the end here in FM

Watching a documentary on them, Walter Becker told the story about how he and Donald Fagen as New York City boys, would often write about life on the West Coast / LA. When they got a chance to do some producing for ABC in LA, they jumped at the chance to live out there, and according to Walter, after moving west, immediately started writing about New York.

The backing vocals were done by Glen Frey, Don Henley, and Timothy B. Schmit. Pretty nice when you can get The Eagles main vocalists to do back vox.

I was watching your body language and after about the first 45 seconds I could tell you are hooked peerage, welcome to the rabbit hole known as Steely Dan. On one of the FM stations here in Atlanta one of the disc jockeys on his last day, last show before retiring played this and I can guarantee you you could feel the emotion. It was a great way to go out with style and class

Great review man! When you consider the 40 year, 12 studio album legacy of Steely Dan and Mr.,Fagen, their contribution to pop music is almost too much to be appreciated until that sad terrible day Donald leaves us also. Maybe only then will folks realize how much we miss those two GENIUSES as you aptly call them!

I and a friend, a band member, went to go see the movie FM because Steely Dan wrote this title song.
I remember the movie, okay, but the song still lives on much more than the memory of the movie.
I was hoping for the version with the sax outtro, but this will do.
Hope you give that a listen in your spare time, and will
    enjoy it also.
Thanks for putting this out there. Till the next time.
    By the way, Cousin Dupree.

I love the sax outro, but this is the original track with the amazing Walter guitar solo. The sax solo in the coda was a "reprise" track at the end of the soundtrack album.

Hey, nice that you gave us a little surprise SD track today. FM is a terrific song which you probably know never appeared on any SD album. It was only on the FM movie soundtrack. This was the abridged version but I’ll take what I can get when it comes to the Dan. Thank you for reacting to this and your comments which show your true love for what Walter and Donald created. 🔥🔥🔥🙏

    • @xebio6
      @xebio6 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Not abridged, this was the original track on the soundtrack album. There was also a "reprise" track at the end of said album which was the coda with an extra sax solo. Then for a compilation someone had the terrible idea of replacing Walter's outro with the sax solo, which is great but NOT the original track.

Since you enjoy saxophone, what do you think of Clarence Clemmons (RIP)? He was in the E Street Band with Bruce Springsteen. The song 10th Avenue Freezeout tells the story of how the band came together.

I still can't understand why this masterpiece wasn't a bigger hit here in the UK; can only think it was too sophisticated. As others have mentioned there's a version with a glorious sax outro, rather than the Dave Gilmourish guitar. Here's an informative hybrid of both = > th-cam.com/video/316mipUnA-M/w-d-xo.html

This (with Walter's great guitar solo) was the original track on the movie album. There was a reprise track at the end of that album with a sax solo outro. In a later compilation the original guitar outro solo was replaced by the sax (wrong move imho). Now there's a mix someone made with both the guitar and sax solos in the coda.
