For 20 years now, the backing vocals of Carolyn Leonhart in Pixeleen have sent chills down my spine! If one can fall truly, madly in love with a woman for her voice alone, it is with hers. Absolutely scrumptious and perfect. Never gets old.
Love your SD reviews! It is THE band and recordings that have made me an audiophile.

"Coz we're going out of business, everything must go" is such a self aware 'meta' line for Don and Walt to include in their last ever song as a band. I'm so enriched to have had them in my life all these years. Thank you for this great reaction vid. RIP, Walt.

Finally! Another DanFan who gets this album. It's fabulous. The writing, playing, production. The title track starts out with some Don and Walter music humor, with a clash of every 'big finish' cliche they could cram into one phrase. It's awesome.

Donald Fagen: The Nightfly (virtually Aja level), Kamakiriad (very funky), Morph the Cat, and Sunken Condos (very lively) and Walter Becker;'s solo albums: 11 Tracks of Whack and the overlooked Circus Money.

Welcome back my brother. A really good album with some great tracks. Props to Keith Carlock who was the sole drummer on the entire album and how about that sax work by Walt Weiskopf and Chris Potter and the guitar riffs provided by Jon Herington and Hugh McCracken? Musicianship of the highest order but then again that’s expected from SD. I think you were thinking of Peter Gunz from that documentary. These 3 songs, in particular, show you the direction that Fagen was headed towards with his solo albums. They are full of gems like this, and also with great lyrics as well. I vote for the journey to continue. Once again, nice to see you in front of the camera again and I hope you heal up as good as new. 👏🔥😄

@@danielmccann8325 Indeed. It’s Becker’s bass in SD 1.0, until Rainey showed up and Becker was inspired to “leave my bass at home”. Still, he did a few amazing one-offs in the later 70s (eg Deacon Blues, Gaucho, FM) -and of course was pretty much the 100%-time bassist for Kamakiriad and both the 2000 and 2003 SD releases (in addition to his own solos of course). He was an amazing bassist; thanks for “hearing” him ☺

Great reaction. I wouldn't get too hung up on other people that can't appreciate this music. As long as I like it, that's all that matters to me. Others sampled Steely Dan because they wanted to write music like Steely Dan but couldn't. I was in Jr. HS when Can't buy a thrill came out. In hindsight, I realize how throughly they got in my head before I ever knew it. Their detractors are more than likely to "come around" in time as some are not ready to appreciate them. Often, the good stuff requires more than one listen. When Leonard Bernstein commented on The Beach Boy's "Surfs Up" he clearly recommended not trying to take it all in in one listening. That stuck with me. Good stuff DramaSydetv. always worth a visit.

Background of the Lord Tariq/Peter Gunz sample kerfuffle [lifting my post from another page]:
“Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)” was an indie release, and became a huge huge monster hit in the local New York metropolitan radio market… Which led Columbia to offer them a major deal largely on the back of that hit...only to belatedly discover that they had never cleared the sample with Becker and Fagen.
By that point, B&F must have been more than a little ticked off that the track was already a regional monster hit - they heard it coming out of every passing car radio in NYC for months - leading to a major label deal, before anybody involved bothered to check for clearances. So knowing they had everybody over a barrel at that point, B&F demanded (and got) an insane deal: 100% of the publishing, and sole authorship for the track (!). Perhaps the most amusing (?) consequence was when ASCAP named Deja Vu Song of the Year in the Rhythm and Soul Category... it was Donald Fagen and Walter Becker - the “sole writers” -who received the ASCAP Award for the Top Rap Song of 1998.
The moral of the story is pretty obvious, and I doubt anybody made the same mistake since.
Bonus Point: Apparently Kanye had started discussions with Becker and Fagen about sampling that same riff from Black Cow. The story goes that Kanye was riding in his limo one day, heard “Deja Vu” on the radio, and exclaimed - “Fuck! Those motherfuckers stole MY song!”
Finally (sorry for the length), IMHO very few have used SD samples to what I think could be their full potential.Just IMHO. Still lotta work out there for the young’ns to do!
Major props to you for your comprehensive SD journey.
