"The Logical Song", "School" , "Goodbye Stranger", "Breakfast In America", "Give a Little Bit", "Bloody Well Right." Amazing band and every song is on this same concert. That said, this is IMHO their best song.
This one and the logical song for me, i still find it funny that this was one of the "smaller" hits they had (and it wasnt a small hit by any means lol), goes to show how good they were.
I remember hearing Supertramp for the first time on the radio and immediately went out and bought "Crime of the Century." Their output over the next few years was superb and their music is timeless. I also had the privilege of going to see Roger Hodgson in concert a few years ago and he can still reach most of the high notes with that extraordinary voice of his. Supertramp are up there with the all time great bands for me.
I'm a Supertramp fan of nearly 40 years and never get bored listening to their wonderful music and amazing lyrics. But now I'm more amazed that you have a great reaction at the first listen! 💕 Please keep listening to Supertramp & sharing your reactions with us. Cheers!
Supertramp is one of the better bands that have ever grace us. They are incredible lyricists & have a menagerie of instruments to share, as well. Always feel a little bit calmer & lifted each time I hear a piece of theirs. They are simply a great band & have become somewhat legendary. Thank you for sharing...
Supertramp are one of the greatest bands ever. Have a listen to "Fool's Overture" someday, Roger's fantastic voice and the haunting music with Winston Churchill's epic "We will never surrender" speech woven into the soundtrack is pure musical art.
You can tell them they're from Britain and it has a different meaning there. "In the UK, a tramp is a person who has no home, job, or money, and who lives outside. They usually travel from place to place, asking people for food or money." Though that is pretty funny. "They mentioned a classic soft rock band with a questionable name!" *clutches pearls*
Supertramp are so underrated. Easily one of the top ten bands of all time. I have them in my top three. Their albums "Crime of the Century", "Breakfast in America" and "Even in the Quietest Moments" are full of songs just begging to be reacted to.
I would not say underrated, but rather more the corner of "overlooked". Most people know at least 1 or 2 songs subconsciously, via, radio/tv/movie/bars/clubs etc, but would not know any title or even know who Supertramp are. But the moment you play one of those songs to them they recognize the songs to some degree. And not going to claim everyone of those subconscious people, will say "i love that song", but quite a few will, never knowing the band is called Supertramp. But let's not overlook the most obvious group who would say "yeah i love Supertramp" right away... are Gen X and they will say the band is criminally overlooked, but certainly not underrated... :P
Give the studio version a listen when able. “The Logical Song”, “Give a Little Bit”, and “Goodbye Stranger” are all great. "The Logical Song" may have one of the best Sax solos ever put to tape!
Saw these guys on their last tour through the US. They had just wrapped a STADIUM tour in Europe, and Boston's 4500 seat and indoor Wang Center was their first US stop. Their flight was late, and they went on stage 90 minutes late. Clearly, there was no time for rehearsals. They blew us out!!! The volume was so much greater than it should have been because of no rehearsal and setting things for outdoor venues. Hearing this crisp sound at 100db was an amazing experience. Rudy, in particular, sticks with me as one of the best matches of geaphics to sound. You're rolling along looking out the front window of a train, and every time the train changed tracks there was a matching guitar twitch and after 8 minutes of rolling through this and all the momentum building, it just stops abruptly at the station. Mind blown when it ended!
Hello dear Aileen👋🏼 I'm so happy you discovered Supertramp! They made some great music too! Could you please also check out "Fools overture" and "Crime of the century" They are masterpieces
A slight bit further into the reaction and what a great series of observations. There is so much going on behind the scenes to contribute to this overall feeling and sentiment that really hits us. And you're looking at all those pieces and shouting them out, and I love that.❤
Good morning, Aileen! Thank you so much for finally exploring Supertramp, a band so unique they could never be pigeon-holed into one style or comparison. Their sound was a blend of Rock, Folk, R&B, Funk, Jazz, Classical, and Pop. Most members were multi-instrumentalists and could apply their skills in pretty much any style they chose to explore. I've seen them three times (the last after Roger Hodgson left the band) and once catching Roger's solo show where he played only the songs he wrote. Every single concert was a wonderful experience, each different from the others. This song is from their most commercially successful album, Breakfast In America. It's a great album but pales in comparison to Crime Of The Century and Even In The Quietest Moments, two of the finest albums of the 1970s. Suggested songs for a better understanding of the band include School, Bloody Well Right, Hide In Your Shell, Asylum, Dreamer, Rudy, Crime of the Century, Easy Does It, Sister Moonshine, Poor Boy, Two Of Us, Give A Little Bit, Even In The Quietest Moments, Downstream, Babaji, Fool's Overture, The Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger, Breakfast In America, Take The Long Way Home, Lord Is It Mine, Child Of Vision. All of those are from Supertramp's biggest three albums with a couple from a fourth.
The first day I arrived at college, I wandered into a dormmate's room, where "Dreamer" was cranking. Loved it, and have enjoyed ever since. The most recent album of theirs I (re)discovered was Brother Where You Bound. The title track of it is wonderful.
Love your distinction between just listening to music and thoroughly engaging with it. And as a musician and I know that you are as well, that happens on an even more intense level of engagement, but in general, everyone can experience it but it takes truly engaging.
I saw Roger Hodgson perform I guess 6 years ago, and he sounds exactly the same as in the best years with Supertramp. He made Supertramp and still does in his performance. A humble and good man, bless him!
So I have been to two Supertramp concerts, The Breakfast in America and Famous Last Words tour. Their concert is all about the music. They would sit down with their instruments and for the next 2 1/2 to 3 hours it was just pure musical magic. Supertramp has two lead singers, Roger Hodgson, the one singing in this song, and Rick Davies with his soulful voice. So sometimes you will hear one singing and with other songs it will be the other. Once you go down the Supertramp rabbit hole there will be nothing but magic and soul.
Hi Aileen 😊 Completely spot on and brilliant reaction and analysis to Supertramp's' Take the Long Way Home. I've read all the comments and a few mentioned your analysis in relating to Pink Floyd's song Time to Supertramp 's lyric "when you look through the years and see what you could have been oh what you might have been if you would have more time". Your analysis of this jumped everybody's brain except for a couple and that just tells me how much you've grown and I'm very proud of you. Your critical thinking is astounding. It is a sad concept to look back at what could have been/what might have been instead of pursuing towards a goal. Not saying that the pursuit won't take twists and turns and side roads on the way to the goal... that's part of the experience. Truthfully, the joy is in the pursuit. Roger Hodgson sings about how after so much time on the road, you want to take the long way home, either due to homesickness (just want to go back to your house, no matter how convoluted the road back is) or not having reasons to return (why return and feel diminished by an ignoring wife?). "I really believe we all want to find our home, find that place in us where we feel at home, and to me, home is in the heart and that is really, when we are in touch with our heart and we’re living our life from our heart, then we do feel like we found our home." Even though there is a literal meaning behind the lyrics, art is interpretive and each person take this piece of art and apply it to their lives... that's the beauty of art. Once again Aileen, you are the best because you allow the music to encompass you... envelope you...allowing you to feel the experience and thereby come to an understanding of the intention. All the recommendations are fantastic and I look forward to your reactions and analysis of each. Have a great day you and Arya with much love 😊👍💪❤️👑👑
Aileen, interesting that you said give a little piece of ourselves. Well, one of Supertramp’s best songs is called “Give A Little Bit”. You’re quite perceptive.
What a wonderful and insightful reaction. 🙂I love that you now arrived at Supertramp's songs. PLEASE continue reacting to them. So much depth, meaning, and excellent compositions -- and surprises actually (!) -- are awaiting you... All the very best from Germany
..hey Aileen, yes, Supertramp is a good find, and its a rabbit hole... there's lots of treasures hidden underneath... my top 3 to go to next would be : 'Logical Song', 'Rudy' and 'Fool's Overture' - musical diamonds... 🔶♦🔷
you know what Aileen? after watching some social media content creators,( pretty sure people know who), it's refreshing to know that you all are not the same.
Supertramp was so different in sound/style and messaging than most of the other groups at the time that it was mind blowing. There is good reason why their album Breakfast In America shot to the top (Great title track too btw). With songs like Take The Long Way Home, The Logical Song (pay close attention to the lyrics, perhaps even have them ready to read along with as it's actually a pretty deep song) and Dreamer they took the world by storm. You're absolutely right about the fact that we, as musicians, seem to experience music differently than nonmusicians. Not saying better, just different. We seem to live and breathe it as we listen
All of Supertramp's songs have a powerful and personal message. Roger Hodgson had a dramatic, and traumatic, upbringing and it's reflected in many of his lyrics. Taking the long way home is way to extend to escape from homelife.
I was lucky enough to get the new Supertramp, Breakfast in America album at the radio station in high school. I cracked the cellophane open, put side one on the turntable. I only stopped it to turn the record over for side 2. Every song hit me like a freight train! No bad has got me with every single song on the album and this band has done that over and over!
Try 'School' ! It's like what I call a little ride in a rollercoaster.... great message too! 'Child Of Vision' if you love music ;-) Just close your eyes and let the music take you away, a real treat!
Ah, you started with my favorite Supertramp song! These guys were really, really good. Always unique instrumentation and always intriguing lyrics. I think you might enjoy The Logical song too. Thank you for sharing this one, Aileen. You might also really enjoy Bob Seger's Like A Rock. Have you listened to Bob yet? That one has a time theme too and will put you in your feels. The official video is a keeper.
superb musos, 2 songwriters n lead singers, musically creative n real lyrics, had many hits in 70s/80s. wat v others said n dreamer, breaky in usa, rudy, hide in ur shell, enjoy!
Supertramp is no joke. They were one of the most talented and innovative bands of the 70s and early 80s. But my all-time fave is School. Then Bloody Well Right, Crime of the Century, The Logical Song, and on and on...
Hey Aileen, The Logical Song, Goodby Stranger, Dreamer, Fool's Overture, Breakfast in America (song) {the whole album, Breakfast in America, same title, is FIRE though!!} E N J O Y !!
Aileen, this has been a favourite song of mine since the year the album 'Breakfast in America' was released (1979), am delighted to see you have discovered Supertramp - trust me, and the others who have mentioned it, you seriously need to listen to 'The Logical Song' , which won the Ivor Novello Award in 1979. I am certain you'll love it
It's great to see the new generation finding bands like Supertramp. I spent my entire adolescence listening to it and to this day I listen to as much as I can.
This song is like tasting ambrosia. Frothy, sweet yet tart, bubbly but light. It has such savage lines with a carefree attitude that flows through it. The song rises easily above the potential for suffering and sadness. What a f@cking song. Home yeah
That run of albums Supertramp had was musical perfection with such a clean, clear sound. Crime of the Century is my fave out of that run but yet another magnificent British band.
Okay so welcome to the wonder that is Supertramp. There are two songs you really MUST listen to: "The Logical Song", and (since you mentioned giving part of yourself) "Give A Little Bit".
Supertramp are legendary! When ever I hear them, I'm thrown back into my youth, when they still existed and where at their peak. They where a part of my youth! You definitely are about to discover an other musical Gem! Go on, it's definitely worth it!!
Now you need to check out their songs “The Logical Song”, “Give a Little Bit”, and “Goodbye Stranger”. I promise that you’ll be blown away
And Crime of the century + Breakfast in America
I think i heard Aileen say something about giving a bit or something like that. So, I would go either with Give a Litte Bit or Fool's Overture.
And "School", "Bloody Well Right" and "Fool's Overture".
And "Dreamer", of course.
Agreed, agreed & agreed
“The Logical Song”, “Give a Little Bit”, and “Goodbye Stranger” for sure!
Breakfast in America
....and Bloody Well Right!
"The Logical Song", "School" , "Goodbye Stranger", "Breakfast In America", "Give a Little Bit", "Bloody Well Right." Amazing band and every song is on this same concert.

It's almost unbelievable just how well they played this song live given the number of instruments and some of them playing 2. Incredible.
In church our pastor said, “Take the long way home - it’s a song by Supertramp.” Paused. “Wait, should I be up here saying ‘Supertramp’?”
You can tell them they're from Britain and it has a different meaning there. "In the UK, a tramp is a person who has no home, job, or money, and who lives outside. Hello dear Aileen👋🏼 I'm so happy you discovered Supertramp! They made some great music too! Could you please also check out "Fools overture" and "Crime of the century" They are masterpieces
Great - you named the two I would've punted.
Amazing song. The live version of this song is one of my all time favorite songs. Thanks!
Hey, a Supertramp track! Always great to hear them every once in a while. Usually on my car radio, but yeah, legendary group.
GIVE A LITTLE BIT is my favorite SUPER TRAMP song, THE GOO GOO DOLLS covered it
When you look through the years...
Those lines always get me now that I'm an old man.
So amazing they can take a fairly complex song and do it just as well live - talented guys!
A slight bit further into the reaction and what a great series of observations. There is so much going on behind the scenes to contribute to this overall feeling and sentiment that really hits us. And you're looking at all those pieces and shouting them out, and I love that.❤

“its raining again” is great music video. You might need a box of tissues

I would recommend mixing in studio versions with them - they were real craftsmen in the studio. The album Breakfast in America is an all time classic!
bloody well right their best song
I was front row center when Heart opened for them at Seattle Center!
“Bloody Well Right” was my introduction to Supertramp - would enjoy seeing your reaction :)
