Since you were confused about what was going on at the beginning of the 1st OP (since for some reason it didn’t include English subtitles), here’s what they say in the Funimation English dub (which is fairly accurate in translation):
Narrator: Wealth, fame, power… Gold Roger, the King of the Pirates, attained this & everything else the world had to offer. & his dying words drove countless souls to the seas.
Gold Roger: You want my treasure? You can have it! I left everything I gathered together in one place! Now you just have to find it!

a note for the future. when you do get in to one piece proper, ask questions rhetorically. don't go hunting for answers out of the gate and be careful about comment sections on videos you do make regarding the series.
most one piece fans are generally more considerate of new viewers than fans of other anime so you won't have to worry too much about spoiler type stuff. that being said, it can be difficult to talk about some things within the series specifically as it's very easy to start talking about things that the series itself may have not made you privy to yet and i assure you that questions you do have about the world and its characters are by and large answered by the series itself. just sit back, enjoy the ride as you see fit and i promise you, you will find just about everything you're looking for in this series and then some
one piece is an adventure and is meant to be enjoyed like one.

“How do you get a 1000 episodes?”
Well here’s the thing. The series creator Eichiro Oda is a bit of an insane genius. Oda has been planning One Piece ever since he was in school, crafting the world, characters and story from way back when.
This is more than just a silly pirate story, Oda had crafted a believable world with political and racial divides, functional economies, and entire cultures for each and everyone one of the islands in the series.
Oda is a long term writer who enjoys planting seeds for plot points that won’t sprout for 400+ chapters/episodes in a way that makes perfect sense but few would ever see coming…
So how does this series have 1000+ episodes? Because the creator is one of the most meticulous story writers in the world who has planned out almost every main story best years in advance. That’s how.

@@GirlofCulture ah, I get ya. Yeah that’s the weird nature of hype and humanity. Always the contrarians we are. It’s so bizarre when something gets so large it just becomes intolerable, ironic since nothing about it changes inwardly.
But hey as is life. At some point I just stopped caring about fandoms or sizes, focusing on the works solely for the sake of the work. Took a long while to get to do that though I’ll admit…
On an unrelated side note if you’d be interested in something that hasn’t been hyped up by everyone, but probably should be I’d like to recommend checking out the game “13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim” from VanillaWare. It’s on PS4 and coming soon to switch.

Funny that’s the experience you got.
And I mean that in the sense of I was lucky enough to find One Piece in my Middle School days and wasn’t really caring about fanbases at the time.
So I’ve had a more enjoyable time following the story.
The experience you got from the now bloated fan base and how they’re probably ruining it for other people as well, is understandable.
Based on your comments, you still gave it a shot and it wasn’t your thing.
One Piece is not something I consider a “Masterpiece”. Those labels ruin things for me.

The nice thing about One Piece is that, while it is SUPER long, it's also split into very clearly-defined arcs, making it relatively easy to take breaks from and pick up again where you left off. There's a lot of continuity involved, sure, but it's an anime so you know there's gonna be flashbacks galore to keep you from getting lost. (Not to mention TH-cam comments.) So if by some miracle you do react to it, I'd recommend doing one big saga at a time and taking breaks to avoid burnout. You'll figure out pretty quickly where good stopping points are.
That's the same recommendation I have for OG Dragon Ball incidentally, though that isn't NEARLY as long.
As for what version, I'd watch any, but I've personally been attached to the Funimation dub for over 500 episodes now, so it'll be real weird getting used to anything else. Just as long as you avoid the 4Kids dub like the plague, least of all because it's long been discontinued.

The reindeer character you kept seeing is named Tony Tony Chopper. He's a blue nosed reindeer that ate a devil fruit that made him half human. So he has human intelligence, and can shape shift into a number of different forms that blend his human and reminder features. He's also probably the smartest member of the main cast as he is not only the crew's doctor, but is one of the best doctors in the world of One Piece. He's also a capable fighter who learns martial arts later on in the series and combines that with his shape shifting to become even stronger. I'd highly recommend watching One Piece up though the first main story arc, which ends when the crew reaches a place known as The Grand Line. Seriously, I'm not necessarily saying you should react to it (although it would be awesome if you did), but at least give it a try in your own time, if nothing else. It has one of the best written worlds I've ever seen in fiction, and the overarching story, mysteries in the world, and characters are all great. It's the only anime I will rank above Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood with no hesitation, even if it is a REALLY huge series.

    • @vitre69
      @vitre69 2 ปีที่แล้ว

If something is good, it being huge is actually a plus if it doesn't tank in quality.
One piece is the rare RARE example of something that didn't, unlike Bleach (which became shit tier in the last arc due to rushing) and Naruto (wtf were ninjas about again? Stealth? Hold my nuke).

    • @MoostachedSaiyanPrince
      @MoostachedSaiyanPrince 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@vitre69 Oh, I know. The only problem is that it's so big that it intimidates people into not even trying it. Like, it being big is fantastic, once you're into it. But even as someone who was a fan of One Piece as a child that couldn't watch any episodes for at least a decade after 4kids died, the idea of picking it back up was daunting as hell when I saw I had roughly 800 episodes to catch up on. I'm glad I did, but that episode count is even bigger now, and it undoubtedly seems even worse to people who don't even know if they'll like the series before they pick it up.

To answer your question about the Calm Belts, they are the currents that border the Grand Line. They are called that because both stretches are completely calm water, no waves or wind at all. They are also populated by giant monsters because ships that land in the calm belt are basically stuck since they can't sail, making them easy prey.

Dubbed openings are very rare nowadays. The only ones that have dub openings are shows from the 90s that get new seasons (like Pokemon, Yugioh, and Dragonball) while One Piece does have a dubbed opening for the first one I believe it doesn't continue, and I could be wrong. But with streaming being more readily available, plus people preferring sub over dub anyway, dub companies find it to be a waste of time/money dubbing the openings

I have always loved the second opening ("Believe") though.
Incidentally, since you brought them up, Calm Belts are the reason everyone looking for One Piece sails on "The Grand Line". A Calm Belt is basically a region of the ocean where there is no wind or forward movement, so you're just stuck there. Or you would be, if it wasn't also populated by the biggest and most horrifying sea monsters in the setting. Yeah, all those giant monsters and animals we see are basically the little ones, and the calm belts are full of the really scary stuff, so nobody sails there save a few very specially designed ships specifically made for being able to cross the Calm Belts, and I think they're like "count on your fingers" rare.
There was a dub that wasn't that great and had a pretty famous opening that is basically the meme gold standard for bad dub openings. Pretty catchy though. It later got a better dub but I'm not sure if the how much it has covered, I know it translated the original op but not sure if they did any others. You might want to react to the 4kids opening, it's pretty legendary.

Oh? Duckgoesmoo is thinking about reacting to One Piece? Awesome! Was a fan of your Red Vs Blue reactions so I'm looking forward to this possibility.
If you do react to it I personally recommend original Japanese, mainly because the Japanese VA for Luffy is fantastic. I reccomend dividing your One Piece reactions into several chunks, mainly by saga in the beginning or by arc when you get to the longers arcs. Watching One Piece seems like a daunting task (it kinda is) but if you learn to love the characters enough you will be willing to travel anywhere they take you, no matter how far or how long the journey takes.

This was quite fun, its always great seeing someone's first reaction to some of the wackiness of One Piece (which the Openings display fairly well).
It also really is interesting to just see all the Openings one after another, because it slowly makes you realize how much of a journey One Piece truly is. We start of with a small crew, which progressivley gets bigger and bigger, you see a bit of their growth in almost every opening, you see more and more of the joruney that the characters have overcome by how many side characters and new villains appear, and you even see the wear and tear on their ship over these openings, showing you that the journey is indeed hard and they do not come out of every situation without a scratch.
Its also quite fun how you can see in just 8 openings how iconic and memorable One Piece can be when the first opening "We Are!" already has a second version in opening 7, at which point One Piece was already airing for close to 10 years i think ?

So, fun facts, "We Are" (the first opening and pretty much the main theme of the series) has been the opening many times. Like opening 7 is the same but has the Straw Hat crew's VAs singing it. Then there are remakes with different singers and even episode 1000 had a remake of the opening with new members, new animation and the like. It's really good.

“This is a lot different than the dub isn’t it?”
The first one. One Piece actually has two dubs. The second dub by Funimation uses the Japanese openings with custom made English lyrics. The first dub by 4Kids was a rap song. The 4Kids dub didn’t last long since they tried to make it more appropriate for younger audiences which due to the nature of One Piece it obviously didn’t go well.

@@theduckgoesmoo I know of an even worse case than this where 4kids eventually destroyed a show. Not the dub, surprisingly, but the Japanese version.
There's a really popular manga series in Japan called Kinnikuman. (Highly recommend checking it out. It literally started every major trend we associate with Shonen Jump) We only got the sequel series, Nisei, which was renamed Ultimate Muscle here.
The funny thing is, 4kids kinda knew of this one's existence before Toei could release it, so they actually got the rights to the show before it first premiered, and what they did was have the manga authors, Yudetemago (And yes, authors, since they use this as a team name for themselves) sign a contract forcing Toei to edit the anime from its much more graphic and raunchy manga counterpart and make it appropriate for young kids so 4kids wouldn't have to make any visual edits.
Japan hated this so much, they refused to support the show, leading to it being canned after one season. But the show wound up being so popular in the US, it got renewed for another season, not once, but twice. But yep, after season 3, that was it. It just wasn't making the profits it needed in Japan, resulting in two story arcs that may never be adapted to anime. (And we only got one of those arcs in North America. Unfortunately, the manga wasn't very successful here)

The question everyone asks is always "How do they manage to hold a story for more than 1000 episodes?". It's pretty simply, actually: Story arcs!
The one and only main goal of the series is to find the One Piece, so, in the meanwhile, each new location they visit is an arc, with its own plot and its own goals to achieve while they're there, like rescuing someone, defeating someone else, obtain something.

I'd definitely love to see your reaction to the rest of the openings, for sure! And to the whole show, too, honestly.
One Piece has recently beaten out Batman as the second most sold comic book in existence(just behind Superman and it's catching up fast for number 1). As for why it is still going and why it is such a massive hit, Oda(the author) is a tremendously talented writer. Fantasy novel reviewers were recently pulled into doing reactions for One Piece and have likened the skill Oda puts into his story to literary giants like Tolkien(author of Lord of the Rings). One Piece is a comedic adventure story first and foremost, but it knows how to set things up and pay them off well.
If you'd like to see an amazing video explaining why One Piece is so adored/worth a watch after you do the rest of the openings, I highly recommend Super Eyepatch Wolf's The Appeal of One Piece: Where to Start.
And if you ever do decide to watch the show, I highly recommend the sub. I love many dubs for shows, but the sub for One Piece is just perfection. Luffy's voice actress is legendary. No one can outdo her amazing Luffy skills. Like, that scene from None Piece when Luffy is attacking the cat pirates: knowing a 60 year old little lady was screaming her head off in a recording booth and having the time of her life is too grin-worthy. She pours heart and soul into voicing him. Also, opening 7(the repeat of opening 1) is the Strawhat pirates(Luffy's crew) all singing it together for an anniversary of the show. And Luffy is the narrator of opening 4 talking about how excited he is to look for One Piece and become Pirate King.
I've been watching you and your awesome friend, Kirby, react to Helluva Boss and I saw your Zoro death battle a long time ago. Your reactions are great and I look forward to seeing more!

One Piece is coming up 25 years old next year!
    1000 episodes
    1000 chapters
    100 volumes
Over 1000 'relevant' characters (there was a popularity poll recently of 1000 characters)
Holds the Guiness World Record for longest series written by a single author! (correct me if I am wrong)
Soon it'll be 25 years old.
    Some answers to your questions!
-The ship, as well as the trees with tangerines on it, are important symbolically to certain characters.
-The ship does sustain a lot of permanent damage over the show! Sometimes by enemies, sometimes by the crew accidentally!
-I believe its Sanji (the blonde guy) or Nami (the red head) that actually does the hair maintenance on the ship. They also have fully functioning showers, toilets, etc. I believe there are official sketches of the internal structure of their ship, the Going Merry.
-As others have said, the original opening got redone for the 1000th episode with new animation and an updated crew!
-Number 7 you reacted to, was the same song as the original, but sung by the voice actors of the main crew. They have actually done several songs, many of them Christmas related, singing in their characters voices and it's stunningly cute 😂❤
-That "thing" with antlers is a young reindeer with high human level intelligence and speech. There are fruits that can turn people into animals (like tigers and eagles), humans are also animals and there's a "human-human fruit". He ate that one, so he can transform into like a big buff Sasquatch looking dude which is his "human form", the cute little guy which is called his "brain point form", and into an actual reindeer! (We imagine if a human ate this fruit, nothing would happen aside from you getting a bit smarter) 😂

So since you are most likely not gonna watch it anytime soon (though i think reading it would be faster, people could read along since there is VIZ website or unofficial sites and you wouldn't get hit with copyright strikes from Toei since you wouldn't be showing clips) i thought it would help to explain a few things, mainly Devil Fruits.
You see: One Piece has this strange fruits that, once you taken one bite of you gain 1 power. Now where they originate from or if anyone just create is still unknown but they are so mysterious that they are only one kind of each power meaning if someone eats one, that power is their's and their's alone. No two powers are the same. Though there are powers that are alike like controlling ice or controlling snow. Also, if the user dies, the fruit is reset into the world into a new fruit, literally going into a normal fruit and transforming it into a devil fruit. Also: no one person can eat two fruits. We haven't seen it happen but it has been said that someone tried and disintegrated. Oh! Also: once you eat a fruit, you can never swim again. You just sink like a hammer. Now, that doesn't mean you can never go towards water, you can still take showers, bathes and such, but once you are in like ankle deep water, you get weak and start to drown. Now you can still use your powers, which we say Luffy had he's head stretching out from the water (long story) but that was with help. You can float on inflatables though and be fine, you'd just be floating and needing help out.
So, that's just the basic knowledge of Devil Fruits but the real interesting thing about them is the powers, specifically the types. See: Devil Fruits come in 3 separate types: Paramecia (pair-a-me-c-a), Logia (Low-ge-a) and Zoan. Each of these types give the user a specific power that is stranger than the last.
Starting with Paramecia: it's kind of a "anything goes" set of fruits. The best example is, of course, Luffy who ate the Gum Gum Fruit and he's body turned to Rubber (Rubber in Japanese is "Gomu") and now he's entire body is a rubber, and yes: Every. Part. From he's skin, to he's bones, to he's organs, everything turned to rubber. Though that's just one power, most can be activated like turning your body into blades or producing wax from your body. And some are pretty bare bones like increasing your weight or talking to animals.
Speaking of animals: the Zoan fruit. This is pretty basic to since the main power is giving the user the power to transform into animals. Chopper, the Reindeer Human in the crew, is a good example. He ate the Human Human Fruit and thus can change from a Reindeer form, a hybrid of the 2 (the cute form he normally stays in) and a full human form. (Grant it, as the doctor he has found ways to get more transformations though drugs, but that's only he's own ways). Not to mention sub species like different dogs, cats, animals that are related like cows and bulls and such, as well as Mythical and Ancient animals like A Phoenix or Dinosaurs. It's pretty wild once you get to those.
And finally: Logia. It's also pretty basic but possibly the strongest fruit category: the ability to produce, control and become the elements. A good example is Luffy's Brother, Ace, who ate the Fire fruit and thus can use and become fire. And when you activate the power, you pretty much become immune to physical damage. Grant it, Haki (that's it's own topic for another day) can harm you, but training to avoid damage is possible. And Logias come in sorts of powers, some greater than others, like one can be a swamp man who is just a body of mud that can sink anything inside or the power of light and darkness. So basic yet powerful.
So yeah, if a character just happens to be separated from their body or turn into a Triceratops: it's a Devil Fruit. Though~ don't be confused since there are normal humans who just have super human abilities.

I was introduced to One Piece through fanfiction, first a crossover with Naruto (Shinobi of the High Seas) followed by what's considered one of the best One Piece fics ever, This Bites! by Xomniac.
Well, I say "introduced," but I had watched the infamous 4Kids dub once upon a time, I had just forgotten about it for a while because 4Kids did some really bad stuff to it (like removing a plot-relevant character because they didn't think he'd be plot relevant).
To be fair, 4Kids knew they wouldn't treat it right and tried to not take it, but the company they were getting some other shows from said they had to take them all or none of them.
That being said, I would definitely be interested in watching you watch the show, because it is an amazing show. If I had any editing skills whatsoever, I'd volunteer them in a heartbeat (especially because then I'd get to see your un-edited reactions).

Imma sell you on One Piece right now.
The reason they make 1000+ episodes is because the story is incredibly expansive. Oda keeps putting stuff in that he wants to explore its nuts, the guy is a creative machine.
Not only that, but the main selling point of the show is his world building. Fans that stick to it can attest that they almost watch the show like they do the news, to know whats up in the world. Because Oda doesn't talk only about the main cast, he also tells about how the different factions, groups and cogs of the world turn and affect the story.
One Piece isn't the best anime in the world, but no one can deny that we'll never see anything like it again for a long while.
It's legendary on what it does.

Well a bit of a contributing factor in 1000 episodes is that (I think) the anime has caught up with the manga. So each episode is now one chapter of the manga. Although this has lead to the episodes in the recent arcs to be…padded to fit guides on episode lengths. A lot is from doing a recap at the beginning of every episode and there tends to be an increase in frames/focus on people’s shocked expressions.

    th-cam.com/video/AcSVkCNDLZg/w-d-xo.html
The other two are made by a channel called Super Eyepatch Wolf, called "The Appeal of One Piece: Where to Start", and "Why you should watch/read One Piece". Both are excellent videos showcasing why One Piece is so beloved, and why it is definetley worth the watch, and although they also contain some slight spoilers, they are still a good videos to get to know more about why One Piece is so beloved without necessarily having to commit to watching or reading it yourself.

A friend sold me on Onepiece before I saw anything, then Onepiece sold itself to me. He hit me with the classic: "Have you ever cried about a cartoon? would you like to?"

You gotta continue now that u are at opening 8, also some openings have different versions due to story progression, also you said they dont kill off people easily, you have no idea what has happened yet!
Now if u are interested in it, but dont wanna watch like 1k episodes, just watch the movies, cuz 3 movies are about the story just showb differently. Honestly i would say watch the episodes, you wont lose anything. And its a fun watch!
