The show fallows Lupin The Third the grandson of the fictional gentleman thief, Arsène Lupin, is considered the world's greatest thief, known for announcing his intentions to steal valuable objects by sending a calling card to their owners. His right-hand man and best friend Jigen Daisuke, an expert marksman, Lupin and Jigen are often joined by Goemon Ishikawa XIII, a samurai swordsman whose sword can cut anything, and Fujiko Mine, a femme fatale and Lupin's on and off love interest. Lupin and his gang are constantly chased by Inspector Zenigata of Interpol, who has made it his life's work to arrest them, pursuing Lupin across the globe.

21:00 what's in it for the crew? Each of them has their own individual goals that line up well with luffy's goal. On top of each of the Straw Hats enjoying each other's company
Zoro: become the world's greatest swordsman, so being the right hand of the pirate king is a good way to get that done
Nami: create a map of the world, which since part of being pirate king is reaching the end of the world, her goals are in lockstep
Sanji: find the all blue, an ocean that contains all the fish of the sea, so much like nami, a ship going to unexplored places is a good way to find that
Usopp: become a brave warrior of the sea, teaming up with a future pirate king will get you that experience
Chopper: become a doctor that can cure anything and be accepted, see nami and sanji
Robin: discover the complete history of the world, the place where One Piece resides apparently holds that truth the world government has stamped out
Franky: build and then serve as shipwright for the greatest ship ever, the pirate king's ship is a very good candidate
Brook: conquer the Grand Line and return to his friend, the pirate king is considered the one who conquered the grand line
Jinbe: create true understanding and camaraderie between humans and fishmen, probably the most personal to luffy himself, but a friendship with the pirate king would greatly influence others

    things to note:
4:34 the estimated cumulative revenue one piece has generated in just its comic sales alone is estimated to be somewhere between $9-10 billion as of currently
6:57 that elephant is more than 20 miles tall
whenever there is a flashback that goes back to events the readers have already seen, oda redraws the scene from scratch. he does so because "showing my fans old drawings in a new chapter would feel like i was cheating them"
10:15 oda does have an assistant but by and large, every manga page you see in this video is his personal work
10:27 many of oda's major characters are visually stylized after famous people and some of them are named after either historical figures or reference other stories throughout our world
13:03 toriyama is credited for being the godfather of manga panel structure. he has gone on record to applaud oda on his ability to do the same
15:44 with proper organization and a full size book shelf, the entirety of one piece's volumes would fill roughly 3 sections give or take assuming all of the volumes bindings are visible
16:29 oda has been thinking about one piece since before the fall of the Soviet Union
16:56 oda held on to the payoff of silvers rayleigh for 10 years
17:57 1040 chapters now and there is still no pirate with an eyepatch
18:50 fans like to say that oda is the greatest fantasy author since j.r.r. tolkien, the man responsible for the lord of the rings
27:06 oda is also extremely good at addressing very heavy topics that many people would otherwise opt to avoid talking about entirely
28:18 nah, people just get big in this series
29:43 toei animation, especially in recent time, has developed a rather poor reputation for it's inconsistent animation quality among other things. that being said, the current arc of one piece has been regarded as the most consistent animation quality the company has produced in roughly a decade. the anime is as good as it is because it's oda's story. no experience comes close to the manga though
the best way to start enjoying one piece is the same way the crew approaches finding the one piece. it's not about the treasure at the end. it's about the journey you take to get there. but the treasure is certainly a nice reward for an adventure well had, wouldn't you agree?

here's a really, really fun fact about oda: he actually married one of his characters.
years ago, there was a one piece live action stage show where former cosplayer and model chiaki inaba played nami, the strawhat's navigator. turns out, oda was backstage at that show and met up with chiaki. they hit it off, dated for a few years and then got married. they are living apart, due to oda's work schedule but they are still together after nearly 20 years.

27:55 When taken a bit out of context, I suppose it's easy to say "Good for you" to Doflamingo. But I do wanna say that the hatred that the villagers feel for the Celestial dragons, which Doflamingo is a part of is very well deserved. Celestial dragons will do whatever they want with people because they see them as beings that are lower than dirt, to keeping slave, torture, kidnapping children and forcing them to eat devil fruits. They are HORRIBLE people, and Doflamingo, growing up, had the same mindset as the other celestial dragons. Always asking his father, "where are our slaves?" Of course there are some Celestial dragons that change their ways, one of them being Doflamingo's father, he realized theres more to life and wanted to experience being a normal human being. But he was too naive, and too hopeful; because of the actions and reputation celestial dragons have, they were immediately targeted because they were no longer in the governments protection. It was a way for the villagers to take out their anger on a clan that has ruined their lives forever, sure they are taking out their anger on people who wanted to change (well, mostly, cause Doflamingo was an assh0le even as a child) but they were too blinded by rage to see it. Everyone made mistakes during that moment, and for me, its a bit hard to say who was truly right and who was wrong.

standard reading is right to left. as for going top to bottom while reading in that direction in same panel varies from manga artist to manga artist. sometimes you even have to read into another panel before finishing the previous panel to make sense but that is rare to come across. now another thing to know about reading manga is that traditionally you start at the "back" of the back versus how we are use to starting a book. not all manga are like that but most are.

The thing about most of the videos on topics like this being 3-4 years old, is that they're still pretty up to date. In the years since this video has been posted we've only had two arcs, and one of which was only about four chapters long. The current Wano Country arc of the series has been going for 130+ chapters and almost a total of four years, with a decent chunk left of the story to go there before it finally reaches its conclusion.
I'm sure once Wano ends there will be another wave of videos like these talking about how good everything is because I feel like everything has been improved upon very much since, but at the same time it's still only a single arc that isn't covered by videos like this yet.

While I do agree with some of the weak points he pointed out, most of them don't really faze me. The animation has it's weak points sure, but it only gets better as it goes on. And as for female characters, while Oda def could do better with more designs, it's not really something I've ever really cared about. The only one that stands out is the pacing issue for the anime. Some of the arcs drag out certain scenes more than I feel needed, especially when the episodes have a minute or two of recap along with the long intros. Even so, I only really noticed that more and had an issue with it in the last few months. Being caught up and having to wait a week in between each episode only to have a lot of the episode be the exact same as the last is really frustrating. But when you're just starting out and already have 1000 episodes to binge at your own pace you kinda forget about it. I personally still love the anime and do recommend you give it a watch if you're not into reading manga. While everyone would love to see you react to it, Toei also loves to copyright One Piece stuff, so you have to be real careful with the editing. Love the reaction, and would love to see more reactions to other one piece stuff while you decide if and how you want to tackle one piece itself.

    • @adamh4h4
      @adamh4h4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agreed. Really didnt gave a f*ck about its sub-standard animation and bad pacing. The "meat" of One Piece is the God-Tier story. Love the progression. Also, people forget the anime has at times CAUGHT UP with the manga and had to drag the episodes out( Dressrosa is a PRIME example). Its a TV weekly thing. It'll eventually catch up. Not to mention the BREAKS Oda needs to rest and freshen up. Drawing isnt an easy thing (like any other job) especially when theres a deadline.

I first got into One Piece in 2005 and sometimes I have dropped it for a year or two (or my entire tenure in university because I was busy), and catching up is always a hassle but damn, it's so good. I'm currently on my first reread in years, and I stop all the time and just whisper to myself "I love One Piece" or "I love this or that character so much." If you feel like getting into One Piece, I can't help but recommend it.
And yes, Zoro was the first to join the crew.
You were wondering what everyone in the crew gets from joining, besides family. All of them have a dream they can't really fulfill without traveling the world and learning more or becoming stronger. Some of them have even given up on their dreams until Luffy bullies (sometimes literally) them into joining the crew.
You could try watching One Pace, which is a sort of One Piece anime supercut, that cuts out a lot of the filler in anime and tries to address the pacing issues mentioned in the video. So while it's still a lot, you would get through it a tad quicker. I haven't watched it myself (I dropped the anime in... uhhhh... 2013 maybe? or earlier? because of the pacing) and don't really know how they would feel about doing reaction videos to that (editing down would be necessary, I think). But you could also do what a lot of booktubers who got into the manga during covid have done, and watch the series arc by arc and then give a review, with maybe a few clips thrown in. That would also avoid copyright stuff and reduce the stuff you need to edit. Toei, the studio that does One Piece, has a bit of a bloodthirsty reputation when it comes to copyright (look up the Totally Not Mark situation from this winter if you want more info on that).

Some spoilers for up to Enies Lobby:
Oda uses the really well known pirate gimmicks solely for important characters. The hook hand pirate is Crocodile, who is one of the first Warlords we meet, is an saga villain, as well as one of the top 3 villains in the story so far. The peg leg pirate is Zeff, Sanji's teacher and father figure who owns the floating restraunt Baratie. The parrot pirate could be Rob Lucci, the final boss of Enies Lobby, and strongest of the assassins of CP 9. It could be argued that Oda hasn't used the parrot pirate yet, because Lucci only has a pigeon. This means that the eye patch pirate will likely be someone important.

Next One Piece video recommendation: "Why One Piece is the King of World Building" by Mr Morj. Lengthy, but so absolutely worth it.
BTW, and I say this as a guy who definitely prefers the manga to the anime, this guy makes it sound like everyone hates the anime. They don't. It's literally the highest-rated anime of all time and many popular One Piece TH-camrs and reviewers (such as KingOfLightning) have stated that they wished they hadn't read the manga first so they could experience the story through the anime.
In my opinion, the slower pace and heavier emphasis on characters helps people who don't have a week to analyze every individual chapter of the manga to fully take in that visual storytelling Oda's mastered, the music adds several times the weight to every emotional moment, the sound effects add several times the weight to every action scene. Not to mention that the anime is actually better-paced than the manga at times, like with the Lougetown, Thriller Bark, and even arguably the current arc.
There is filler episodes and arcs whenever production gets too close to catching up with the manga, but it's also the best filler I've ever seen in an anime. It's all more worldbuilding and character interaction that's been given the thumbs-up from Oda himself. One mini-arc was so good, Oda made it canon right after it came out, and 1-2 Filler Arcs are loved and spoken highly of even by crazed "canon-only" fans. Of course, very little of it is nearly as good as the canon story, and 99% of reactors skip it, but the point isn't to say "watch the filler," but to show how much love and understanding for the source material the anime was made with.
Unfortunately, One Piece has a very loud minority of Manga Elitists, one of the loudest of any anime Fandom I know. It's similar to watching an anime dubbed or subbed: Both options are usually good, but one specific side despises everyone on the other side with a passion.
The manga is still better (for many reasons others have covered more throughly than me) but it's like comparing an experience that will 100% change your life to an experience that will 115% change your life. If the 100% is much easier to experience than the other, you'll probably pick that one.

I started with the manga and it will always be superior to me. That said, I do also love the anime. The voice acting, the soundtrack and visual effects are all now ingrained in my head whenever I read the manga. I do hope one day they either trim it a bit more for better pacing or give it a DragonBall kai treatment (reanimation like Wano?). (I can't 100% speak for fillers since I did skip some though a few I did enjoy).

Zoro is indeed the first member to join the Strawhats (and even hilariously questions what he got himself into).
    LONG POST ALERT W/ SPOILER:
As for “what everyone gets out of it,” everyone has their own dreams and most of them connect to getting to Raftel in one way or another anyway: Zoro wants to become the world’s strongest swordsman by beating the current best. Nami wants (or wanted… they don’t bring it up often) to map out the world (or at least the route they’re taking). Usopp wants to become a real man/adventurer by facing his fears and possibly visit the giants’ home of Elbaf. Sanji wants to find the All Blue, a legendary sea in the Grand Line where all the world’s fish live, making it a chef’s paradise. Chopper wants to learn as much about medicine as he can to cure any illness he can. Robin wants to find the Rio Poneglyph (which is in the same location as the One Piece, which is cool) which holds a full century of history that was erased by the World Government. Franky wants the ship he made the crew to travel the world like his mentor’s ship did for the Pirate King. And Brook wants to travel with Luffy and then go back to Reverse Mountain to meet with a friend he left there to tell him about all of it.

Foreshadowing is by far one of odas specialties, and hes good at themes, the theme of will and dreams is heavy and its so inspiring
when i watch fairy tale and see natsu scream about friendship for the 1000th time i rip my eyes out, but when i see luffy push past his limits im right in his corner telling him to get tf up u got more in u, oda knows how to show people surpassing their limits without being a cop out and hes not afraid to shw that the main character has no chance in wano currently the main boss has already beat luffy like four times😭😭😭😭 he just keeps coming back
and luffy is the best mc cuz hes perfectly simple, and is the realest dude u would ever meet which is why even tho in marineford he was so weak compared to everyone fighting, they stood up for him cuz he showed more courage than anybody everytime they slapped him down he got back and just kept charging for his brother and when i say outmatched i mean OUTMATCHED almost every major player in that war at the time could one shot kill luffy but he never cared he just kept going
and personally the best part for me is the theatrics, especially in the anime, odas fights and a lot of important moments are done in a theatric way and it feels so good to watch, like the first time watchign robin say "i want to live" or in fights the first time when i saw luffy finally defeated doffy it felt like i could breathe again i was on the edge of my seat cuz i was like 11 lmao but now i pay taxes and its still goated

Really glad you watched this one. I actually forgot on the previous Super Eyepatch Wolf video where I was doing recommendations, he's also done three videos on Wrestling. The second one, about longterm storytelling in general and The Undertaker in particular, was trapped in Copyright HFIL for a while, but seems to be back now. I know you've said "Wrestling's fake" and asked about the appeal once or twice, and that's what the first ones about so it's another I'd definitely recommend. I think that one is "Professional Wrestling is stupid and beautiful and I love it". And then the third is about heels (wrestling villains basically). I'd recommend the first one at the very least as it does a great job going into different aspects, some cool history and storylines, as well as the weird ways that real life events and scripted in-universe stuff can blend together and influence one another to the point of being indistinguishable from one another. I remember I once commented "Wrestling is a fictional universe in which we all canonically exist and can interact with the characters", I just find that concept interesting.
As for One Piece, I'd definitely recommend the Mother's Basement ones as well. I was also thinking about if there were any games that would make getting the base story easier. I know that Pirate Warriors 1 covers from the start to just before the time skip, and 3 covers from the time skip to midway into Dressrossa and then has a game-only ending since it wasn't done at the time it was made (Pirate Warriors 2 was an original story). But I'm not sure if there are any others that cover large chunks of it in an enjoyable way. But maybe something to look into for the gaming channel given the difficulties of the actual show. Romance Dawn for the 3ds covers a good chunk of the pre-timeskip stuff, however I haven't played it myself and the reviews I've read were not good, so probably not a good way to experience it the first time.

The crew mates didnt join for the treasure. They all have their separate dreams and tagging along in Luffy's journey is kinda the best way to achieve it. Zoro wants to be the greatest swordsman and that title is held by a pirate, Nami wants to draw a full map of the world, so travelling with Luffy just makes sense, Sanji wants to find a mythic sea where you can find fish from all seas in the world, Chopper wants to cure every diseases, so going with Luffy helps him get all the possible knowledge, Robin wants to learn the whole history of the world, which happens to be tightly linked to the One Piece, Franky build their ship and his dream is for that ship to travel the whole world, so he wants to make sure the ship is good enough to make it, Usopp wants to become a brave warrior of the sea, so becoming a pirate just makes sense. Kinda amazing how they all have different goals that can be achieved by going with Luffy to find the One Piece

20:58 each character has their own dreams that coincide with each other. Sanji wants to find the all blue a place where all fish from the seas come to so he has to travel through sea and he follows luffy because luffy captivated him and protected his drema for him. Ussop wants to be a brave man and what is better than be on the pirate king crew to become brave because the pirate king will pass through a lot of challenges. Nami wants to create a map of the entire world and grand part of one piece world is the sea so follow the pirates, Robin wants to find the history of the lost era and the only way to find it is through sea, franky wanted to create the best boat and he already did kind of but he wants to see where the pirate king can take his boat, brook wants to find laboon a whale that luffy promissed to come back after becoming the king of pirates, zoro wants to be the beat swordsman in the world and what is better to find opponents than being in the crew of the pirate king, chopper wants 2 things follow the doctor that saved his life and he said that the skulls of pirate flags are the freedom and that he should follow it that's part of the reason he is following luffy the some other part is that he wants to find a cure that can heal all diseases in the world so it's better to go to all kind of places and see the diseases, and jinbei is completing his promise to luffy dead brother and a promise to luffy itself.these are some part of what they gain following luffy but most of the part like 65% follow luffy because he is captivating and he stood up for each one of them and their dreams, his charismatic is what makes people follow luffy and desire to see his dream/goal being fulfilled.

One piece has some incredible moments, i would say better than most anime/manga out there. But it's hard to ignore the in-between said moments. Rob Lucci vs Luffy is one of the highlights of it's arc... But to get there... There is alllll this other crap around it that makes the pacing hellish. Cutting again and again from it to accompany what's happening with other ppl.
That being said as well not all of one-piece arcs are amazing. Some are downright boring... And getting through them is such a slow process. Even more lately as oda has mastered the ability of stalling to the highest level i could ever imagine... The current arc began on chapter 909 and it is still not over at chapter 1040. That's 140 chapter... 140 weeks, approximately 2 years and 9 months no counting any breaks he took. 2 years and 9 months on an arc. 1 arc.

There is a project called "One Pace" that is a fan project of re-editing all the episodes of one piece to fix the pacing problems so it correspond more to the manga, this also has the effect of drasticaly reducing the amount of episodes it has.
There are a lot of people that are really strict about not watching edited episodes, but i still think its a good and a way less intimidating way to get introduced to the serie.

The issue with things like One Pace is that it literally cuts out EVERYTHING that isn't in the manga which makes things impossible to follow if it's your first time through the series. Things cut and jump around so sporadically that you're going to struggle keeping up unless you're very familiar with the series. It also straight up removes a lot of things that the anime does better then the manga, like A LOT of the filler that's been added in Wano to make things more cohesive.
There's no shortcuts for getting into the series. You either read or watch everything if you want the experience. It's length isn't something that will be a negative once you're actually into it.
