Yes! Momma Aleene was inspired to try bread dough after visiting Mexico. She saw the beautiful flowers and when she returned home she found that she could create the bread dough recipe with her Aleene's Tacky Glue and a slice of bread. What she loves about this recipe is that because of the glue base, after years of display or storage, the items made are not affected by bugs like regular bread dough. [Tiffany]
Yes Debra! Momma Aleene developed this recipe over 50 years ago when she visited Mexico and saw all the wonderful flour and water flowers they were making. The only problem with that basic recipe was that over time, bugs would eat the flowers. What is so cool is that with Aleene's Tacky Glue, there is no bug problem. [Tiffany]
who would ever think you could make like play dough with bread and glue i think it is awsome i use to make roses out of play dough for my grandaughter she just loved them
I love this technique. I haven't seen tacky glue in the shops here. I've seen pva glue, white craft glue fabric glue and mod podge. You do a beautifull job at whatever you do
The recipe of Aleene's Tacky Glue and bread creates a great dough that does not crack. You can certainly create the armature for figurines but you will not get the same detail in say facial features that you would be able to achieve with professional artist clays.
@spotlightentertain There is no problem with mold because the glue acts as a "plasticizer" and the dough air drys completely. We have vintage pieces of Momma Aleene's bread dough flowers that are over 50 years old and they are still beautiful!
Hi Jeanie - Yes, Momma Aleene introduced this technique back in the early 1960's. To my knowledge, she never appeared on the Gary Collins show but did have her own show for 15 years. Aleene's Creative Living ran on on Lifetime, TLC and The Nashville Network. [Tiffany]
Mary - are you asking how to get a hole in the bread dough? Just cut an eye pin to about 3/8 in length. Dip the wire end into Aleene's Tacky Glue and press it into the side of the bead (angle will depend on how you want it to hang). Let eye pin dry in place while bread dough flower dries.
Making flowers out of bread dough originated many many years ago in Mexico! The mexican women couldnt afford to buy their own jewelry, so they made it from bread dough! I bought a craft book many years ago, im 65 years old, and it had the whole story about making flowers and jewelry from bread dough in the book! The flowers are very beatiful, they also make dolls too out of bread dough! Its a very ancient art form!
tina hall I used acrylic paint . I think I have tried all the acrylic paints on the market, they all work...just make sure to use the Aleene's Tacky Glue for the results I show.
The Aleene's Bread Dough recipe is air dry. You do not need to bake this dough. Depending on the thickness of the design you make, it can take up to several days for the piece to dry completely.
Hi! This is new for me I'm Young and not from USA so...never saw this before but it's Genius! I was wondering if it still works if you use some old bread (which is a little bit dryer). Thanks to anybody who'll answer me!
If anyone's worried about mildew or just general cleaning, I use Aleene's tacky glue in nearly all of my craft projects, and to help keep things clean/easy to wear and use, I spray it all with a clear fixative (either an acrylic one used for my charcoal drawings or a clear Krylon-- always do a patch test on your material first though). It keeps it from getting dirty and if it gets dusty, you can wipe down easily with a damp cloth. Aleene's tacky glue has always gotten along well with all my clear fixatives-- doesn't dry out/crack/peel. It's an easy fix.
Fantasvale- It's best to use day old white bread. In the US, it comes in loaves that are sliced. So the recipe is for one slice to 1 Tablespoon of glue...not sure if it is available that way from where you are. You might have to experiment a bit with what you have where you are. Have Fun!
Fantasvale- The original Aleene's Tacky Glue in the Gold bottle is available in Europe. Check with 'I Love To Create dot com' customer service and ask where it is sold in your area.
One slice of bread is nothing compared with the waste we throw out of our fridges and larders because we buy too much and forget to use it. I think we have to use some kind of perspective here but I do understand your sentiment.
u used to make salt dough then i realized ow many ppl were starving in te world and that we sould not waste tings tat god intended for our nourisment. so i guiltily stopped using food to make art

Always a fan favorite! :)
I made those flowers along with your Mom back in the 60’s. I put ingredients in snack size plastic zip lock bag to mix.
Love that!

Hey thanks!
Our Momma Aleene developed this bread dough technique over 50 years ago with Aleene's Tacky Glue so we've never tried any other glue :) [Heidi]
Hi! Thanks for your answer. I live in the South of Europe so I think I can find a bread like that but I'm not sure if I can find the Aleen's glue...
Tiffany and Heidi are Aleene's daughters so they only used the Aleene's Tacky Glue for their projects :)

Does it just dry hard? Do you need to put some kind of sealer?
That's wonderful! We hope you'll share photos of your beads with candace@cool2craft (.com) so we can share them on our website!
will this flower ever crack!???and can we use this kind of "clay" to make figurines!?? :))
@rechellelml Well, since Aleene is Heidi's mother, we would only recommend Aleene's :)
How does one get a hole into this? say for a beading project?
Heidi, it seems very heavy. Will it lay flat when you put it on?
Ronda Bergeron Not heavy at all :) With the plastic buttons and the lightweight bread dough, it's a comfortable necklace. Yes, it does lay flat.
I really liked

white bread is one of the worst things a human can put in their bodies. So glad to see a better use for it, and i'm serious!
Why don't you just tell us what "tacky glue" actually is e.g. PVA?
u used to make salt dough then i realized ow many ppl were starving in te world and that we sould not waste tings tat god intended for our nourisment. so i guiltily stopped using food to make art
