Getting Pipe Under Sidewalk Or Driveway

  • www.AimArizona.com One method we use to get under driveways and sidewalks. You can use a modified version with steel pipe.
    Since we are a licensed contractor, we have purchased this tool and use it all the time. You can possibly rent it, if you live in the USA and are near a rental center. Sorry, I don't have any information on where to rent them.
    Basically, the tool is a series of modified steel rods that have a female threaded end and a male threaded end that are four foot in length. There is a high caliber superfragilistic point that is screwed onto one end to pierce thru dirt, rock, concrete and anything else that gets in the way. The end used too propel the superfragilistic point is a mushroom end that protects the threaded ends of the pipe.
    So, thread on the point, insert the mushroom end to your rod, dig a trench, dig out an spot where you think the point will come out and get to work. As you get to end of you four foot rod, then take off the mushroom end and thread on a new rod. Move the mushroom end to the end of the new pipe you just threaded on and start smashing. Enjoy dong this until the superfragilistic point has popped out the other side.
    Once the point is exposed. Thread it off.
    If your soil is firm and won't collapse, then pull out the tool and insert your pipe. We do not recommend doing this. Instead, you should attach the pipe to the rod. As you pull the tool out, then the pipe will follow the tool thru the hole. When the pipe has emerged on the other side of the sidewalk or driveway, then you are nearly done.
    Enjoy the Music!!!!!

    Good method, won't create a big cavity like water pressure method. Concrete slab is not affected by doing this, loads are dispersed around the hole since the majority of the soil is left intact.

    Wondering what soil types this is most suited to. Seems like it would work best in soil that holds its shape so the tunnel this tool forms won't just collapse, not so well in sand or round gravel. Or maybe for sandy soil you just start with the final pipe?

    • @AZIrrigationMaintenance
      @AZIrrigationMaintenance  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can attach pipe to the end of the tool. When you pull the tool out, then you are pulling the pipe through too. Don't have to worry about the collapsing hole. This video shows use going thru cinder.

    This is a thoughtful informational video but why won't will not use a water jet I don't get it did you put the tip on the end of a PVC pipe threaded of course hook up garden hose to it or whatever your apparatus is and what the water do the drilling for you without trying to hammer that pipe underneath

    I worked at putting pipes underground for years and can say that would rarely work, especially at low depths. one poxy stone falling would fuck it right up.

    • @AZIrrigationMaintenance
      @AZIrrigationMaintenance  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We have been doing this type of work for decades. It is very important to back fill the trenches with dirt, cinder or some-type of back fill that does not have any large rocks in it. Another important aspect is to winterize the pipes in cold climates.

  • @JB-pb9xv
    @JB-pb9xv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was about to say this would never work with PVC pipe though, but you guys are just using the same head to bang a big enough hole for the slip pipe using the metal piping. And then using that same head, to push the PVC sleeve through the hole you just banged with the other piping.
    Nice the only other issue that ever seems to occur, is having to dig the land down far enough to have the pipe length stretch out to go under.
    Did you guys make that threaded metal spear head and those other threaded pieces yourself ?

    • @AZIrrigationMaintenance
      @AZIrrigationMaintenance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the biggest issue, digging out far enough on both sides of the bore to get the tool in and out...
      This tool was purchased and comes with all those pieces.

      @@AZIrrigationMaintenance It is a great tool, but in all honesty, IT SHOULD go through rock, etc when the price is over $2000! Not for the typical homeowner. I checked their 'rental' tab on their site but it went to a SPAM site. A shame as it should work in my rocky/caliche soil.

    How do you attach PVC to the rod?

    • @AZIrrigationMaintenance
      @AZIrrigationMaintenance  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is another adapter that screws into the rod and then you screw that into the PVC. Or there is another point supplied with the tool we have that screws into the PVC and then we slide it thru if it the bore hole doesn't collapse or if it's too rocky.

    This looks like way too much work. Premier and other people make air powered numatic moles that basically use a air hammer to drive themselves underneath the sidewalk or Road. You just Simply tie the line to the back of the mole pointed into the ground and it's slowly hammers itself straight underneath whatever Road or sidewalk you pointed under.
    Even has a reverse valve built-in if you twist the hose counterclockwise to turns it reverses and starts hammering back out of the hole in case you hit a big rock or something
