Watch videos of the earthquake in Japan from the top of skyscrapers. They're remarkably resilient actually, mainly due to the flexibility. The important part is to dampen oscillations, because oscillations can increase in strength during an earthquake and cause structural failure.

I wouldn't have demo'd the old part until October 17, 2024... Loma Prieta 35. I would also have left a small part of it, like a pylon as a memorial to both the victims of the quake and The Miracle on Interstate 880.
The Miracle on I-880 is right up there with The Miracle of Stairway B, a miraculous event on a day otherwise known for a massive tragedy.
Of course, we've still got AT&T Park (if the home of the San Francisco Giants can survive the quakes in "San Andreas", then it's certainly going to survive the next REAL LIFE Bay Area Big One!), the spiritual successor to Candlestick Park (which would also be a good place for a memorial to The Loma Prieta Quake of 1989).
It's called honoring the past while looking to the future at the same time.

I don't know either i was born with weird brain or something is wrong with me because I love nature disasters such as tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes eruption. Maybe it's something really scary horrifying, terrifying, unbeatable and unbelievable but to me it's something normal. I just want to experience at least one of those nature disasters in my life time. Unfortunately, I'm living in a country where it's literally unaffected by nature disasters. Guess which country is it. What do you think about me? Am I crazy or something else?

    • @wyliehom8050

SkyDefender People in the 1930s didn't know much about earthquake.

    • @crazywayne7051
      @crazywayne7051 ปีที่แล้ว

The cantilever bridge did just fine in the earthquake the problem was the wooden tiles that were driven in the mud sure to off at the bottom of the concrete footings.
The new bridge is a cantilever design that is 10 times inherently more dangerous to structural failures because of its lack of redundancy in the design that is horrible beyond belief.

Nothing is earthquake-proof; "earthquake-resistance" is the goal of modern engineering. Contrary to the astonishing number of uninformed comments in this stream, known component-manufacturing issues have been or are in the process of being mitigated. Even without mitigation, the new bridge is many times more earthquake-resistant than the old one.
Not going to use this new beauty? Great! More room for me!
For anyone actually interested in facts, they are easily available at various online sites.

The western suspension portion underwent a seismic retrofit but the eastern part could not be effectively upgraded. For one thing, that part of the bridge was built on wood pilings driven into the bay mud in the 1930's. Not a great foundation.

I regret to say that the catenery system that is shown on the bridge have a lot of rectangles (0:58) and a rectangle will change its shape due to the fact that its diagonal is not bounded to create TRIANGLES. So I am afraid the damping of the deck would not be as shown as those blessed vertical cables from the main catenery cable will cause the main cable to develop not only the fundamental but also the harmonic frequencies. The damping cannot come from that cable suspension system but it had to come from the deck which is a little better than the old Tacoma Narrow bridge which has the same cable suspension system. If those suspension cables had additional diagonals or the deck was stayed by cables forming triangles anchored from the deck directly to the pylon or tower then the deck will not vibrate as shown in fact it will be more stable as any oscillation will be canceled by the triangular shape of the tower the deck and the tension cable as in cable stayed bridges.
At o:57 the left main cable is seen oscillating laterally, but because of the rectangular gaps due to the vertical cables holding the deck from the main cable that main cable will be vibrating vertically like the Narrow Tacoma bridge. Those vertical suspension cables should now be accompanied by diagonal cables.

I agree it's been a huge debacle, but even with it's shortcomings and flaws, it's still far safer than the original span.
That said, they could have built this far safer, simpler, faster, and cheaper if they had just gone with the original plan for a simple causeway. Unfortunately Oakland bitched and moaned about getting another 'ugly' bridge and demanded an architecturally unique span. Like that's gonna make Oakland seem nicer at this point. Whatever.

The problem with that bridge is it's a cantilever that is self-supporting by compressing the deck but the supporting column is not centered and placed vertical the column should have been leaning 15° towards the island this engineering blender is why the bolts on one side of the Tower or tighter than the other and the bolts were discovered to be defective when attempting to torque them to their maximum specification .
The inbalance of this bridge will cause its ballast to be its destruction in an earthquake.
For the ballast to balance this span they actually use the bridge section coming from treasure Island as a counterweight.
The Bay bridge is nothing but an architectural engineers wet dream.
Is the only bridge in my 40-year career that I worked on that I advise people to avoid like the plague because of its horrible structural design.
You'll notice in every video about this bridge they never mention the footing of the vertical column supporting at all.
The engineers also forgot to mention that if treasure Island move North 1 ft at a 70 to 90° right angle the entire structure will fail.
