I just graduated with my B.S. in Biology and minor in Health Disparities, which is also what led me to choose a public health route rather than medicine!! It's so reassuring to know there's someone out there with the same story and doing well because I've been feeling so lost :')))
Hi dude! I am literally in the position you were 10 months ago. I've been thinking about medicine for a while but leaning towards public health now. I hope you found your way, I am really interested in what you ended up doing??
I am literally in the same route. I finished my BA in biology and premedical studies. I initially wanted to go to med school. However I did lots of research and found that public health solves healthcare problems from their roots. It’s a lot of management and communication skills. I perusing an MPH degree now. Medicine is interesting but it is a long way career that requires passion and dedication. In public health, you can start working while you are studying so you can potentially gain more experience and ultimately become a healthcare professional. Just sharing my thoughts…
The whole concept of this video is awesome! And as an interviewer, you asked great questions. I’m in my MPH right now and just wanted to TH-cam a day in the life of an Epidemiologist. So glad I found this! Also, Go Dawgs! 💜💛
thank you so much it has helped me a lot. i was confused about doing a master's in epidemiology or the master's in public health. but now i know that by doing pub health i can still get the epi knowledge as well as biostats and the general knowledge.
Hello Chris ! Excellent video w good insight of the daily duties of the job. I will be starting in the Fall20, after 15 years of clinical work as a PA in California.
Could you please let us know more about your experience? I got admitted but a little scared, as an international student, I'm not sure if it is easy or not. I heard it is really hard, harder than the B.Sc degree.
Awesome vid! Very helpful. I got my undergrad BAs in biology and psychology. I've considered medical school, pa school, nursing, and emergency management. Still can't decide after graduating 5 years ago so I've been working a call center job to get by and pay back loans. Epidemiology seems so cool and in a way, it is a combination of all the things I've considered. Thanks for this!
I got my undergrad BSc in psychology, I've been working in primary health (mental health settings) and as a high school psychologist. During my undergrad I got interested in public health, complex behavioral interventions and determinants of health applied to non-communicable disease (considering mental health as a chronic condition). I will start an MSc in Epidemiology in just a couple of weeks! My goal is to start an academic career in psychiatric or social epidemiology, we need more epidemiology science in Psychology for sure!
@@Beringer90 Congratulations and I wish you well on your journey in the MSc program! I agree, there needs to be more focus on the psychological aspect of public health, but I bet there will likely be much more growth. It's great work you're doing!

Young mentioned that he started off as an engineer, but was not good at Calculus and Physics. Being an epidemiologist does have math involved, how is it different? I'm also someone who does not excel in math, but is interested in epidemiology. How difficult would it be to get a Master in Epidemiology?
Hi Kelvin. I have a MPH in Epidemiology, and I am currently working on PhD in Epidemiology. The MPH is a professional degree with multiple concentrations (biostats, epidemiology, environmental science, behavior health, and health systems). Majority of MPH programs require one biostatistics class, however; for epidemiology concentrations most programs required a second biostatistics class. These two classes go over topics like correlations, chi-square test, analysis of variance, T-Test, multivariable regression analysis (linear, logistic, poisson, cox proportional hazards models). The intro to epidemiology class does have some easier math in it, such as proportions, percentages, and etc. Typically, you take principles of epidemiology, intermediate epidemiology, design and analysis, biostatistics 1 and 2 then you have to take 9 hours of electives. Some electives might be topic related (cancer, infectious disease, chronic disease) or more method based (math modelling, survey design, sampling methods, and etc).
@@canine3206 Hi Erin, thanks for your reply!! I do recognize some of the statistical terms you mentioned, seems like it's not too heavy in mathematics. And I feel confident that if I work hard, I can probably do well even without a strong math background!
I am on the same boat as you who's math is not the strength, but the problem arises - how much math and data analysis you can handle at work in the real world after graduation? If your job requires tones of math skills and your colleagues are way better than you, then you will look pretty bad.
