What is Epidemiology? Advice for MPH students | Qualifications, Expectations & $100,000+ Salary!
In this video, I will be discussing what epidemiology is. Epidemiology is the branch of medicine which deals with the incidence, distribution, and possible control of diseases and other factors relating to health. There are many definitions but I like to say it's the study of disease frequency and we use that data to make informed healthcare and medical decision for the general public. COVID-19 is a prime example.

I really loved this video. Mainly because I have been a bit torn in the direction I want to take with My MPH. Currently focusing on Health Promotion, but found epidemiology fascinating. I am currently finishing a certificate in IPAC, I know it is spring board from epidemiology but this video provided the reassurance I needed and interest in go the route of epidemiology. I am entering my 2yr MPH but my school would not allow me to change the minor and I may have to consider a grad certificate in Epidemiology to get all the skills I need for the field. I am realizing that most jobs wants the MPH focused on Epidemiology especially in an entry level position.
I’m on my career path to Epidemiology. Very excited about it😁😁

If you are in Regulatory Affairs or perhaps in Pharmacovigilance, having some background in epidemiology and/or biostats also really helps. As an RA lead, I need to understand as much as possible about the things the health authorities are asking and our responses to those questions. Being able to talk the same language really helps. No need to be the expert, but I highly recommend taking a class or two just to get the basics.

This was very helpful. As far as being a teacher, one of the best teachers I ever had was...a researcher! He didn't want to teach, he was filling in. But he was at the forefront of his field and we students begged him to stay and teach because he was showing us all new stuff, very exciting. We were so sad when our "regular" teacher (dull) came back. So...think about it!
@@kyabdul Yes because you lay things out clearly in a way that is easily understood and you also seem to enjoy sharing things that you have learned and are interested in yourself. Knowledge is vital but so is enthusiasm and you have both. (I am a flight instructor so I know these things matter.)

I have a health management degree with a few social science/hard science/public health courses but really no public health/epidemiology experience. I have a couple questions for you (I hope these weren’t answered in other vids).
1. Do you have any advice for MPH applicants without public health experience?
2. I’m looking at some general MPH programs without epidemiology concentrations. Do you know if there is a way to enter the field without an epidemiology concentration?

I just found your channel and am thinking of going for an MPH in Epidemiology. I like using programs like R and whatnot so using SAS really peaked my interest. The thing is I’m stuck between that and an MPH in Industrial Hygiene because I have more relevant experience in it. I’m trying to compare the ability to break into the field and opportunities of progression between the two. If you have any information on the Industrial Hygiene I’d greatly appreciate it.

I am currently almost turning a 1yr old as a public health nurse - my first nursing job that I'm currently working at is a COVID clinic. Because of this experience in being at front line of COVID. I became passionate about becoming a nurse epidemiologist...However before I apply for an MS in ph/epi I want to gain as much experience....are you aware of any ways I could do that? Im stuck on where I should start.
I currently graduated with an honors degree in public health, and I didnt know if I should do a master's degree in ph or or I should specialize.... I am very much thankful....
I started my MPH in Epi a month after you posted this, and I wish I would have seen it then. I have to say, I am better at the equations than I am at stats. I am halfway through the MPH now, thinking about changing my concentration and starting a new concentration during the fall.

How is the job market for epidemiology? Is it difficult to find employment right after completing Master’s? The growth rate of epidemiology is only around 5% according to BLS.
5% is about average compared to all other occupations according to BLS, so the growth rate isn’t high compared to the average, but the good thing is that it’s growing and not declining. And like career savage said, it’s not something a lot of people want to do, so it makes it easier for those who do to find a job (assuming there is demand for it).

@@chidozibanayi4954 Hey. Epi IS a subset of Public Health. Same with biostatistics. However you can chose to study public health with a specialty in Epi, Biostatistics or both. It is not rare for some schools offer that option. Note that an MPH itself does not qualify you for a STEM OPT extension like the others do, so have that in mind if you’re an international student.
