Divine interference if you want to use it dungeon master next time the party goes to sleep if you want to use it. because of the because of the armbands and the communication they can do mentally. get asked by one of the Gods if they want to use it. they all have to agree or nothing happens.

Well this thread covers my two misgivings about this episode. Though the Aila thing should have triggered a reminder from Tom.
Even though I'm not happy when I see things like this happen it just proves that they're human beings playing a real game despite what filming it can bring to the equation.
People forget things and make mistakes. Easily forgiven when forgiveness is asked for.
A classic example of when the party does something so cool, clever and/or unexpected, the DM is both impressed and scrambling to keep the narrative afloat. Great job everyone and try not to spoil the twist please!!

That's the trick with twists and anticipation. There is a degree of change in being brought up at all even if you don't say what it is.
Since the priestess is out of resurrections the only other place they know that can bring someone back to life would be the druid that bring them back in an other form, If they would do that to Smeek his belief of returning to life as a stronger creature would come true as most are stronger then goblins Would be quite awesome
Smeek comes back as a halfling that is hooked on coffee.

Tom, I'll share you a secret: If you're a barbarian and you're in combat, this is the procedure: You rage first, whack as much as you can, and then ask questions. Repeat until either you or all the enemies are dead.

so they walk into a bunch of abjuration traps and no one seems to suspect the abjuration wizard along for the ride xDD
Well the glyphs of warding weren’t that advance of a spell. symbol however was suspicious, also the fact he never offered to use dispel magic as a abjuration wizard he should have had that.
And the fact that he mentioned all of the abjuration spells they walked into. Im assuming the door was affected with arcane lock, as quill didnt see a glyph like for the other spells
Lucius mentions that Abjuration is (elouis'?) Specialty before they go through the hidden door but the rest of the party shrugged it off

I called Elois from the moment they got attacked at the house. Only Elois knew that they were traveling there and had the exact address of where she lived. Tom's vision only helped confirmed that fact with the staff that was seen.
This! It was so obvious and I can't believe they didn't suspect him.
Also it became more obvious as he dodged the zone of truth by being like "Oh I trust you guys and shouldn't tell you this but king sus" and then more and more when all the spells in the stairway were abjuration and he didn't offer help with them a single time.
He even sent away any witnesses.
Mark baited you into not using zone of truth, and you still didn't insight Elois?
They always forget about insight and when they don't they fail it xD
Man Craziest episode in a long while. Gotta say, I love that Mark is a good sport and let's the players actually have free will even when it messes up the story he planned. I've tried watching other streams and too often the DM will manipulate the players roll for stuff when he obviously doesn't want it to work out that way, and even if they get a fairly high roll(16-18) for something simple will just be like, "nope doesn't work". Doesn't counter roll or anything, just manipulates the game because it will mess up their story.

Didn't he say that he weaseled his way out of a zone of truth? But joking aside he never fudged a roll for it.
Messing with game mechanics and deceiving your players in that way strikes me as a lack of integrity.
It also screws up a narrative because you have to come to grips with how that kind of behaviour fucks with the continuity.
I don't know which Actual Plays you watch but I'd kind of like a list of ones to avoid if their DMs pull that crap.
I would say that I'm very lucky to not have seen or caught somebody out with the numerous campaigns I've watched though.

Tom... Dude, gotta get those hits in early! You spent two rounds of potential damage trying to grapple a wizard! He's a wizard! High damage, low HP, gotta drop those dudes quick! Also I'm pretty sure Aila would have just cracked him in the skull right of the bat, it's what Katie would have wanted...
Seriously... Anyone who's played D&D for more than 5 minutes should know that the first thing any barbarian does in a fight is Rage then Hit the closest enemy as hard as possible as often as possible. At least until they stop moving, if not a few times more.

@@ElenaAideen I DM for a Rogue/Barbarian multiclass, and every single combat encounter boils down to him raging to gain advantage on Strength Checks, and then because he has Expertise in Athletics, grappling a target and pretty much guaranteeing that success. After that it's Reckless Sneak Attacks against the restrained target before moving on to the next.
@@kassiekitsune189 Just curious why the player would use reckless at that point - it seems as though the entire grappling trick is to grant them advantage without needing to use reckless.
He's kind of inconsistent with his RP by constantly talking himself out of reasons why he wouldn't just DO something, especially with God Eye. He also played how he would play the barbarian not how Aila would play her barbarian which was his bad but.. oh well.
I was amazed they didn't immediately go for his focus at least.

man the whole time i was just screaming that it had to be Ellois.
- They say its a man and we know whoever is working against them has to be in a position of power with access to resources and wealth- so obviously its gotta be someone in the royal or noble line but is likely not the prince since there would be less sloppy ways he could get rid of a family.
-The assassins acted FAST when very few people knew that Lucius was back, so it had to be someone from the inner ring of people who knew first.
-DM makes it a point to mention certain magic users who serve the city are known as Staffs, and the head mage is called Ironstaff- then makes it a point of note that the masked man who send out the assassins has a staff.
- the room Quill saw is in the same style as the library, so either its a copy cat or a secret section of THAT library (which of course, it was)
- Then of course the red warning lights really starting flashing when instead of getting some other authorities involved, Ellois starts quietly ushering all the witnesses out of the library, casually mentions specializing in the same type of magic as all the traps and then insists on hanging out in the back to "protect against attackers" from the EMPTY LIBRARY ROOM.

I can't stress this enough but Aila get advantage on dex saves from spells and traps due to her feral sense ability as a barbarian!!!

I believe it's called danger sense but as long as the PC is present it should be open to discussion.
It is however one more way Tom demonstrated that he doesn't really have a grasped on Aila's mechanics in this episode.
Though considering the number of times he's subbed in I don't think it's entirely surprising.

Worth pointing out that there's a technical distinction between grappling and pinning in 5e. Grappling applies the *grappled* condition to a target. Pinning is a special action granted by the grappler feat that lets you apply the *restrained* condition to a creature you already have grappled.

I love Tom's rp, "but" in combat he forgets and is unaware of many things, like all the effects of the entangle spell or how grapple works...
He kind of triggered me^^
The fact he didn't remember rage giving extra damage, not remembering rage gives adv on str checks. Its like he is a fresh new player.
Mark is so damn good at making and telling a story. He really can bring all his characters to life so well!
I wish they rolled more insight checks :(

I did suspect Elois from the start. Never trust a politician.
Plus Quils vision of the stave sold it for me. Since Mark introduced Elois when he had the staff. It wasnt confirmed that it was the same stave, but i felt it in me bones.
Also RIP Smeek. Glad we spent a whole episode wasting money on him. RIP the thousand gold.
Healing Word guys...c'mon
I find it impressive that although that one decision of the party completly blindsided Mar, he was still capable of keeping things going good improvisation skills good sir. Also I have a few questions about this episode if you don't mind answering. (in case someone is reading the comments before watching the video I will need to talk about the ending portion so stop reading if you don't want spoilers)
1. Sentry knocked the bad guy(don't remember how to spell his name) unconscious with an non leathal blow(2:40:56) would he still have needed the first death saving throw? if not would that mean that by the end he would have failed two instead of three?
2. Now that the party has been brookstoned again will they make the last room of the ship an interrogation room and make everyone of the crew go through it before leaving?
3. In one of the attacks after quill restrained the "guardian" and brookstone 2.0 they got advantage against Aila when the spell also gave them disadvantage in their attacks if I remember correctly, so does reckles attacking overwrite that and that is why they got advantege?
4. Can someone make a meme of Mark's "Oh S*" face when he realized what the bane spell could have done?(2:01:39)
1. Mark addressed this on Twitter, he realized his mistake and the cast replayed the fight from there off scenes but everyone was too far to heal Ellois and he still failed the last save
3. Attacking with reckless gives you advantage but also makes all attacks against you that round have advantage

About number 3. yes I know but quill used his struments of the bards to ensnare them (is that the name of the spell?) and that gives them disadvantage doesn't it? I believe they treat echo as Sentry’s Find Steed now - all she needs is 10 minutes and a 2nd level slot

It seems his primary stats are dex and int (surprisingly).
Mechanically, rogue, arcane trickster would probably be best for him, but mark doesnt make smeek to be viable.
Im guessing he will become a storm sorcerer or tempest cleric if he gets resurrected.
@@shadowstrike7246 id love to see smeek as tempest cleric who heals by usinv his hands as defibrillators and just shocks them back to health. I have full faith that the party will bring smeek back, purely to annoy Tom. Besides, if love to see smeek be a better healer than quill.

Quill being the clerik: I wanna deal damage and attack stuff
Nova being the warlock: Let's heal everybody and keep them alive
Ayla bing a Barbarian: I gonna wrestle the wizard instead of dealing damage
Lucius being a sorcerer: bein unconcious most of the time (so in character for the class)
Sentry being a Paladin: Do we kill or do we knock out?! (IDK if that is typical Paladin, but it's typical Paladin D&D player ;))
As far as the paladin thing the old style which is reflected in the Oaths of both Devotion and Redemption shouldn't even be considering killing if they have other options.
I think Rhiannon's character is Oath of the Ancients though. Not a likely thought but not necessarily out of the question.

Wait, so I’m confused... I always thought that when you reduce an opponents health to 0 non-lethally, they don’t have to make death saving throws??? I’ve done it like that in my games 🙁
That only happens If you say "I'm going to knock out not kill" or say "Not lethal"
Miss Vivian Yeh I know, I’m on about at the end of the last combat on here where they clearly said they were knocking out that elf guy non-lethally but Mark still had him rolling a death saving throw (he rolled one even before Aila hit his body with that lightning)

Regardless, after aila threw the hammer, he started making saves.
Since he had to quickly wrap up, and Ellois was statistically more likely to die, he ruled that he did
Shadow Strike 72 oh...he wasn’t meant to do the Death Saves, that’s what confused me lol. Anyway, i think you’re giving Mark too much credit lol, I think it was just a true slip of the mind. I don’t think statistics and likelihood was anything to do with it (after all, it’s DND and there’s nothing stopping him from rolling three saves the next couple of throws)
@@mafiablokes He even acknowledged that the guy was knocked out. I don't know what could have restarted the death saving throws, because Aila's lightning should have had an attack roll to do that and nothing else went his way.
It's like all the PCs have "Betray me" written on their backs!

Ellois used his reaction twice: once at around 2:18 ish(shield) and then again at 2:21:30 ish(counterspell). Does he get more than one reaction per turn?
Probably not, Mark just forgot that he had already used it.

I absolutely love when experienced players make stupid mistakes such as using up all their magic outside of combat..... even better when u consider the group as far as i recall has yet t find a superior healing potion or even many greater.... and only one ressurection per character is a rough one....
Reminds me of the first episode of Dimension 20's Fantasy High. Players blow a lot of spell slots frivolously and have to deal with it when they get into combat.
Rip Tom, he feels alone and negelcted when it comes to injury checks. But at least he's honest and tries to remember his own injury checks, so I don't mind him calling it out for others. I admire the honest play tbh.

So know I'm like years late to this but just to point out. Quill used command on the shield guardian which would have made h deactivate on its turn not quill's therefore the eilos shouldn't have been able to reactivate it since it would have been his turn and then the guardians in which the guardian would have followed the command and deactivate. Eilos wouldn't have been able to reactivate it till the next round on his turn which he would not get a chance to do because sentry knocked him out
This reminds me of the one time during my dnd group we killed our DM's 2 main villains that were supposed to show up later back to back. He was so mad lol.
@@o.d.d.792 Well one of of the party was a divine sorcerer that was able to convince the first boss he was on his side and was able to use poison (which he was vulnerable to) on him in disguise of healing him after a previous scuffle. We then came in and finished him off. When he died a dark cloud came out of his body which we didn't know what it was. The ranger decided to take out an empty jar that we had randomly found and put it in it. The ranger made a wisdom save that was only successful because of a natural 20 he rolled otherwise he would of been possessed and the jar was coincidentally what the demon was originally sealed in. It was a back-to-back series of coincidences that to this day I have never been able to top. It was glorious.

They had a week of down time since then, I expect she fixed echo during that time.
Echo is a form of familiar. Sentry actually has a spell to bring echo back she just doesn’t mention it much (it’s how the other guardian brought echo back the first time )
So they have to recast the spell and pay the money. I mean I don’t remember them saying it but we can assume they had a week to do it.
Reed K or they just forgot. Rhiannon didn’t really bat an eye the 2nd time echo died and during their week of studying etc, she doesn’t mention fixing echo probably because she forgot after 3 weeks.

My first thought was that they didn't even mark the space(s). Granted he can't see it so would need to remember it.
Though I have to say that Mark had a point. Trott wouldn't have realized without Mark pointing it out.
It isn't about taking the action back so much as it being an instance if meta gaming.

Might have gotten a lot of criticism for this one but it was a really epic battle with party members getting knocked down and getting back up so many times. RIP Smeek? Best NPC ever!

Mark totally gave them a huge clue early on telling them ellois stood up with a crick in his back, because the guy that sent the assassin's had a hunched back

The abbey was totally set up by mark for them to fail. Also mark could have easily avoided this had he wanted to by not even mentioning the secret door.

This was maybe not Tom's episode, not doing the truth spell, missing many of Ailas mechanics and not playing barbarian correctly but it be like that sometimes.
Why was I more upset that smeek died then when sentry or quill died?
Probably because of what Kim said about it. More important things to spend their actions on.
At the end of the day, fun NPC or not, they decided he was still just an NPC.
Elois was already shielded when mark cast the 2nd shield. The shield lasts until the creature's turn.
why did he bleed out when sentry said she will knock him out Hume even said that only melee attacks count as two death saves

Never again let Tom play a barbarian if a barbarian is face to face with a caster they have to smash
Also add 2 for strength related damage you loast 20 points over the battle
Mark messed up because the guardian was entangled which gave it disadvantage as well
To be fair, it's as much Tom's job to know what his spell does and to remind Mark that his spell is affecting the creature.

@@danielhancock9347 since Mark's style of DM-ing isn't Adversarial the idea that he "conveniently forgot" is ridiculous. Frankly the fact that Elois let himself be trapped and didn't have more backup following from among the folks dismissed from the library was exceedingly generous of Mark.
Additionally, I can ensure you as a long time DM myself that it is very very easy to forget which effects are where even in a small scale encounter. The DM is juggling a whole lot more than just stats. They are also managing the flow of the story, the current tension levels of the players, interpreting how to resolve all manner of shenanigans that the PC's throw at them, and all those stats. On top of which they're constantly jumping into and out of the headspace of multiple characters with wildly different personalities. Which I can assure you can be exceptionally disorienting. So if a player wants to be lazy and fails to remind the DM of a circumstance that would benefit them, too bloody bad, it's their own fault at that point.

The guardian that hit aila behind the wall had disadvantage from entangle no advantage he would have missed twice
He also had advantage from Aila attacking recklessly on her turn. Which would have resulted in netting a flat roll.
But yes that was the time Tom should have reminded Mark about the entangle.

So basically due to the party going in the wrong direction and mark forgetting about his characters he almost removed aila completely, killed lucias with outright damage, overkilled smeek, and left the entire rest of the party to be wiped.
They all got saved by the luckiest rolls they could have had at the right moments.
The guardian should not have rolled with advantage... It's restrained
