Laying the track on my N Gauge Model Railway!

  • Back in 2019 I decided that I would build a 4' x 2' N Gauge model railway using primarily re-used parts from previous projects. In my previous videos I explored those parts and my thoughts, then built a baseboard for this layout.
    Sadly, due to various issues this project sat in my garage for quite some time . . but work did indeed resume. Join me in this video as I demonstrate how I laid my recycled track on my N Gauge model railway - hopefully I can get some trains running . . . .
    Watch the rest of the project from the start in the playlist here:

    My all-time favourite engine! The Bulleid Southern Q1. Ugly as hell, but simply raw power.

    That's battery operated. Very nice train track for the train. 🚂 It's a hot summer indeed.

      Yeah, it can run off a battery but mains is better (using the appropriate controller of course)

    Nice! It looks great so far! Also when you were putting down the card who cares if you did it the correct way, if it works it works! Although, I did cringe a bit when you used that nail file thing on the track, I heard about people doing it and causing little scratches in the track where dirt build up gets in and its harder to clean

    So I’m watching the start of this video where you make the base but I gotta ask how do you cut wood properly straight that’s my biggest problem

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I normally draw a line and then follow it - but there are special guides that you can get, and work tables, which allow you to cut between the guides to get it perfectly straight

    What type of track is that, also great video. Am starting my own tiny N guage layout. Haven't decided on whether to do American or UK trains. As an American, our trains just don't have the looks as you guys across the ocean. Great video!

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I'm using a mix of (very old and reused) Peco set-track and flexible, all code 80 (because I have loads and not too fussed about accuracy/finesse at the moment)

  • @danielbothamley5843
    @danielbothamley5843 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello could I ask a quick question please? I'm just starting out with n gauge and I'm using a paste table for a baseboard so I can fold it up when not in use as I need the space so my question is this because I can't have the track on it all the time is there a way to just leave out the 2 pieces over the joint and attach them when in use and would I struggle to attach it to fixed track ??

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thinking outside the box, attach the track to a thin magnetic metal and then install magnets under the track that needs to be removed, that way it would snap into place each time. However, it would mean removing the track miners from the ends and you would need to come up with another way to ensure electrical continuity across those pieces.
      Edit: I’m sure there are other solutions out there, but nothing that I think will be particularly “easy “
