Generally nice but there are some things to improve: 1. There are slicers (for example Bambu Lab slicer) where you can cut with connectors. So you can put the parts like with a puzzle together. That helps with gaps and a strong connection. 2. Never use hot glue for things like this. Hot glue made your gaps so big and on a hot day the parts will come apart. Even very light things like a cable will come lose on a hot day. (Had to make the experinece myself) The time you save with quick drying glue you put 10x in filling the gaps and sanding. 3. Sanding is the process that usually takes the longest time. If you use 120 grid sandpaper you will get a lot of scratches which you have to sand step by step out. So 120 then 240 then 400.... it will cost you a lot of time. So take less of the puddy and be careful with it so you can save the sanding work. Maybe so much that you can start with 400 grid and go up from there.
Ohh I didn’t know about the hot glue part, that’s actually concerning considering that I sold some outdoor models to people 😭 thank you for the advice, I might have to look for other alternatives, I’m hoping the plastic weld helps a bit. About the connectors, I have some ptsd with them, I remember the connectors warped and I had to use a dremmel to make it fit, it was a nightmare 😂I gotta give them another go.
@@3DPrintOver9000 When I want a really stong connection I always use 2 component glue. Its pretty much the strongest that you can get but it can also be expensive if you have to use a lot. But if you can solve your problems with the connectiors, they will help with a stronger bond. I hope you can find some cheap and strong glue :)
I don't know if the application here would make sense but when i was working in ceramics I would use bondo to fill in gaps before adding final layers over the pieces. Bondo's application here should work well because this plastic will be fairly rigid and although no[t] self leveling can sand very easily and takes most paints. Regarding the application of acrylic I'm not sure if its the best option here over others as moisture or heat or even uneven surfaces of projects can cause it to peel. These are meant to be handled constantly so maybe its okay but it could be something worth trying something else.

I think for a huge project like this, 3D Gloop will be your best friend. It's the best adhesive I've ever used for 3D printed parts. The part itself will break before the bond between the parts, since it's essentially melting the pieces together. And if you really wanted to, you could use 3D Gloop to smooth out the print (I personally don't like doing that since 3D Gloop isn't cheap, but tons of people do it).

You really inspired me to push my 3D printer into making some larger prints - I just finished a 4 plate Lugia and will be working on a 5 plate Tyrantrum a bit later this week (not sure I could go life-size on those two ;)). Your video has been such an inspiration and I cannot wait to include some of the things I have learned from you! A really good tip I have found (when gluing pieces together) is using cyanoacrylate (CA) glue and adding a little bit of baking soda before putting the parts together!

This is fire man! Definitely inspired me to try a big print like this. Think I’m going to try and do a big Gengar soon. One tip if you got the money is to look into getting a surfprep sander and using their pro foam sand paper. It contours all unique edges and can really get into those tough spots. I use it in my woodshop and it is a game changer!

I recently saw another creator ( I cannot recall whom) who was doing later-scale prints. They were using wood filler as you have, but instead of water, they used acetone instead, you still get the liquid-like viscosity, but still thick enough. One might say well acitone will melt the plastic but I think given how light they applied the acitone it ended up evaporating quickly. I've never done a large scale print nor have tried this method of smoothing out a part but I heard you say sometimes you sit there for an hour, maybe be worth while to give it a try.... Great video!
I recommend a set of Dura Block sanding blocks. They come in different shapes and sizes and it really makes sanding a breeze. Bondo Glazing & Spot Putty is also great for filling in smaller things after you've primed your parts. You can reduce it with acetone and brush it on for bigger areas. Just be careful using acetone around abs.

Really excited for my Blastoise, even though its a third of the size its still a chonky boy. Love how yours turned out and the eveelutions you have in the background. I decided to airbrush mine cause I didnt want the streaks, but yours doesnt look like it had any so the watering down definitely did the trick. Hey, I've actually been working on a couple of similar things with umbreons and chillets! Unfortunately, pokemon scaling is super wack, so both 1m tall and 1ft tall are accurate. I love your tips, and wanna add some that helped me! Hope they help 1. Always print petg, especially if using outdoors. PLA can warp under the sun. 2. I actually just tried water + wood putty today, and it's phenomenal! Before, I was using glazing and spotting putty, which while great can be expsensive and should be reserved for smaller areas. 3. For the model prep workflow, I'll hollow it out in blender (meshmixer can also work), scale in fusion 360 by creating boxes the size of my print bed, and finally slice up my model along the lines from fusion. Dowels, I think, are the best for connectors! Also, pay attention to orientation, as it can save you sanding. 4. Im a pretty terrible painter, but an airbrush has been amazing for helping paint large areas without streaks. 5. Cyanoacrylate (some superglues) + graphite powder makes for an amazing adhesive between the pieces. 6. For filling seams, too much wood putty or bondo will crack over time. Instead getting a plastic welder, or a simple 3d printing pen followed by your filler can save this

Bro you can thin your paint with stuff with like pledge future floor finish which is basically like a clear acrylic paint that self levels. It removes paint streaks! :) Just watch some videos on it and you will see. You can also use it to do paint washes

Your're like me a harsh critic of your work, one tip I still struggle to apply but would say to you anyways is, don't go thinking everyone will see your work the way you do. You see the closeup IRL details and scratches and layer lines that you maybe couldn't hide properly in every nook and cranny. And you keep in mind all the struggles you went through while making it. But what counts really is the outcome and your satisfaction of it. Keep doing you!

Yes I will! I feel bad cause I just find out an easier way of cutting it up, if you have the time, look up Luban3D. It will literally cut up the pieces for you and it’ll make sure that it’ll fit on the bed of your 3D Printer. I did a trial run on the program and I’m shocked. It’s a total time saver and way easier than the crazy stuff I was doing haha

Bro you can thin your paint with stuff with like pledge future floor finish which is basically like a clear acrylic paint that self levels. It removes paint streaks! :)
Just watch some videos on it and you will see. You can also use it to do paint washes

1 thing that will make your life easier when aligning the parts is to have indexing features (such as pins or something).

@@3DPrintOver9000 When using bambu/prusa/orca slicer, you can cut your files there with pins already in mind.

Thank you! The labor work is crazy, lots of sanding 😂 I’m hoping to get some sort of sanding machine to make my life a bit easier. Painting is relaxing once I am able to get right color, back hurts trying to find the nooks and cracks 😅

Your're like me a harsh critic of your work, one tip I still struggle to apply but would say to you anyways is, don't go thinking everyone will see your work the way you do. You see the closeup IRL details and scratches and layer lines that you maybe couldn't hide properly in every nook and cranny. And you keep in mind all the struggles you went through while making it. But what counts really is the outcome and your satisfaction of it. Keep doing you!

Yes I will! I feel bad cause I just find out an easier way of cutting it up, if you have the time, look up Luban3D. It will literally cut up the pieces for you and it’ll make sure that it’ll fit on the bed of your 3D Printer.
I did a trial run on the program and I’m shocked. It’s a total time saver and way easier than the crazy stuff I was doing haha
