  • In this video I review Smart-Cat kitty litter made by a company called, Pioneer Pet. For more product information, visit their website: www.pioneerpet.com.
    To my knowledge, (at the time of this review), this litter is not currently available in large pet store chains or big box stores. For a list of pet stores, go to the store locator page on the website to find where it's available in your area. It can also be purchased directly from the pioneerpet.com website, as well as amazon.com & chewy.com.
    I don't normally do reviews of any kind on kitty litter but this product impressed me so much that I wanted to share it with you! Also, if you are thinking about adopting a cat, or adding one more to your household, please visit your local animal shelter. There are many, many cats of all ages, shapes, sizes, & breeds available, waiting desperately for loving, forever homes. :)
    My channel contains video reviews of products I own & have purchased with my own money. I am not in any way affiliated with any company that manufactures, sells or represents these products. Update:
    I went on their site to see if any places by me (in Canada) sold the litter, as on Amazon it's $23 for a 5lb bag. Turns out there's a place super close to me that sells it! I bought a 10lb bag for $22.99! 😁I just swapped out my old litter 10 minutes ago (I took a risk and decided not to slowly transition my kittens from my old litter to the new one). I was using Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal, my problem with it other than it not being natural is that the pee clumps never fully hardened, and they ALWAYS got stuck to the bottom. They took to the Smart Cat litter right away! They kept trying to use it as I was changing it, and when I was finished they both used it. The clumps are so durable! It's only my first day using it but so far it's a big upgrade.
    Thanks for this video and for answering all my questions, you were a huge help!

      How old are your kittens? The reason I ask is that some veterinarians don't recommend using clumping litter until they are older because they might eat it which could cause intestinal issues. I've never had this problem myself with my cats but it's something to be aware of. :)

    Thanks for the wonderful review on our litter. We always appreciate it when people do their own reviews and share them. The other litter we make the lightweight version the other part of the litter besides the clay is this natural litter dyed grey. Also there was another comment about the Foster and Smith litter and how it looks the same. It is the same litter we private brand it for them since they have been one of our best customers from almost the start of our company. Thanks again for the review!

      You are so very welcome! :) I love this cat litter and have been using it for about 6-7 months now. It works great at controlling odors, (I have 3 cats!), and it clumps better than any other litter I've used over the years. When I find a product that works well, I happily pass along the info to others with pets! Thanks for watching and commenting on my video! :)

      That's so good to hear! I'm so glad my video was helpful to you! :) I've been using this litter for 5-6 weeks now and I still am very impressed with how well it works. We've had a very hot and humid summer here which is the acid test for kitty litter and how it holds up against all the moisture in the air. This product is great! My cats too are quite happy with it. :) Thanks for watching and commenting!

      I too have 3 cats and have been using this litter for over 2 years now. One of the great things I love about this product is that I just replenish what I need to keep the depth at 3" in each box. I have yet to dump the entire box and start over and my boxes are kept in the basement. It's the cleanest litter I've ever used and it clumps like nothing else! Every other litter I've used including pine, WBCL (corn), I've had to dump everything out at least once per month and scrub the boxes, then start over with all new litter. So for me this has actually cost less to use than the other brands as I go through less product not having to dump the whole thing periodically. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! :)

    I mix this stuff with either the walnut shell cat litter or a corn cat litter, for two reasons. 1. This stuff tracks really bad, so when it’s cut with another type of natural litter that is thicker grained, it cuts the tracking in half. 2. This litter clumps so well it is actually more economical to cut it with either walnut, wheat or corn litter and it will last longer. A walnut mix seems best because the walnut shell litter is thicker grains. A 3:1 ratio (grass seed to walnut) is great.

    GREAT GREAT Video Kathy! Thank you so much for putting out such a informative video for us litter challenged cat parents. I relate so much with what you have said in the video. I have been searching for the “perfect” cat litter and I don’t really think there is one. But, I want a litter that clumps well, not dusty, not heavy, with no fragrance, odor controlling and minimum tracking. I usually use clay litter. I did use Sustainably Yours for a short time. Loved it but I couldnt handle all the sand in my house. I felt like I came home from the beach and I didnt wash the sand off of my body or my shoes before coming inside the house. After watching your video today, I ordered a 20lb bag of Smart Cat from Amazon and I will get it on Sunday. I will have to update you on how it’s going in a couple of weeks! I hope the litter is lighter than clay litter because I did see that SmartCat also comes in a light weight formula. Im hoping that doesnt mean that the original Smart Cat is heavy. Im 66 years old now and I really need to start finding a lighter litter that works for us all! Wish us luck!

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  ปีที่แล้ว

      My name isn't Kathy but thanks for watching my video. 🙂 It's definitely lighter than clay litter which weighs a ton in comparison. I too am over 60 and due to some back surgery, I can't lift the heavy stuff at all. Cats will be cats and some litter always ends up just outside the box but I've yet to find it tracked around my house. I keep my boxes in the basement so everything is contained down there. Glad you found my video helpful and I hope you enjoy the SmartCat litter. 😸

    Very thorough review. I switched to SmartCat last year. My 19yo was the first one to use it and I quickly then changed all the other pans. I also greatly appreciate SmartCat's odor control ability (WITHOUT PERFUMES OR SCENTS of any kind) - I have asthma and I'm super sensitive to that and dust. I think SmartCat is the lowest dust litter I've ever used - I have one giant litter box (a converted storage tub) in my office and I am not having to constantly dust like I did with other litters. SmartCat *is* lightweight/fluffy so it tracks, but I got some honeycomb litter mats which catch most of it. It doesn't track any more than other litters though. I've recommended and "converted" a few friends to this litter. One thing your clump demo didn't show that some people may be interested in is that the sort of gelatin-like consistency of the clumps means they pop right out of corners SO EASILY! It also pops right off the bottom surface easily (I have one cat who digs all the way to the bottom). I therefore have to completely empty my boxes and wash the boxes only about once every 5-6 months - amazing! My friends resisted it initially because a 10 or 20 pound bag sounds expensive compared to a traditional litter. But this lasts SO MUCH longer - with 2 cats, I can go way past a month before needing more litter (I actually can't remember how often I have to buy litter because it's that infrequently) - so....in the long run, it is a lot cheaper than other litters.

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I still love this cat litter. It really does last an incredibly long time. I have 3 cats and I just continue to add more to top it off rather than dump the whole thing. I keep all of my boxes in the basement which can be a little bit damp, especially during the summer. But I've never had an issue with the litter breaking down because of any environmental reason. Good point about the clumps stuck to the bottom of the litter box. I use a heavy steel scoop so that's never been a problem for me. I used to use WBCL but had a problem with it last Spring so I had to switch brands. WBCL is so expensive too so finding this product was a God-send! Thanks for watching and commenting! :)

      Thanks! I'm glad you found my video helpful. Of all the litter types I've used over the many years I've had cats in my life, the worst dust producers were clumping clay and pine. The pine also made me sneeze something awful! I started using the SmartCat litter 2 years ago and I still love it. It's the best clumping litter and has great odor control. I have 3 cats and my boxes are in my basement. I only add enough back into the boxes when the level gets below 3". It stays clean for a very long time! Thanks for watching! :)

      I use a recipe from the book; "Whole Health For Happy Cats" by, Sandy Arora. I found the book on amazon. There is also a wealth of information on the website; catinfo.org. Dr. Lisa Pierson is a veterinarian that runs the site. if you've never fed raw or made a homemade diet before, I strongly recommend reading the articles on her site before starting to have a better understanding of this feeding method. It's a great starting point. Hope this helps.

    it really clumps well..all natural clumping,,,.ive tried it for several months...definitely better then the pine litter...very little dust as far as i can see...its a good natural alternative to clay based and it has a similar texture to the clumping clay so the cats took no adjustment...but its expensive...and not easy to find in stores where i live

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a great litter, I love it! As for the price, before switching to this product, I had been using World's Best Cat Litter for 4+ years. It is the most expensive litter I've ever used. The interesting thing about the SmartCat litter you may or may not know about is, you don't have to completely dump out the box...EVER. When I read this on their website I was shocked! I have 3 cats and my boxes are kept in my basement where it's more damp than the rest of the house. I've been using this litter now for almost 1-1/2 years and have only replenished all 3 boxes when the level gets below 3 inches deep. I am a believer now!! Granted, you need to scoop them every day at LEAST once to keep it clean. But that's a small price to pay for NEVER having to dump out the whole box. With the WBCL, I had to do a complete dump of all 3 boxes every 4 weeks, more frequently during the hot summer months.
      You can order it from here: www.chewy.com/pioneer-pet-smartcat-all-natural-cat/dp/116959

    #The Country Mouse:
    TH-cam won't let my response attach to your comment so I hope you see this. Natural litters are a far better/healthier way to go for both you and your cat but they sometimes lack the ability to either control odors or the clumps fall apart when scooping the litter box. This SmartCat litter is the best of both worlds. I am still very impressed with how well it clumps and controls odors with my 3 cats. I used WBCL for almost 5 years and was happy with it generally but the SmartCat litter is much, much better at both clumping and odors. It's also far less expensive than the WBCL. Check the pioneerpet.com
    website to find a store near you that carries it. It's also sold online at chewy.com.
    I'm so glad the video was helpful to you! Thanks for watching! :)

      You're welcome! Be sure to check with your vet to be sure your kitty is old enough for clumping litter. Sometimes kittens will eat kitty litter and the clumping type can cause a blockage in their tiny intestines. But this is a fabulous litter...I'm still using it a year later and still loving it. helpfulnatural. 2 more questions: 1.does it clump well with poo? and 2.I saw a review where someone was saying after the cat pees, it eventually gets so hard that it sticks to the litter box like glue. have you had that experience ?

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This litter does not clump kitty poop but it does help it dry out much faster. It controls odors very well! As for the clumps in the box, I saw the review that you're referring to. Firstly, you need to have at least 3 inches of litter in the box at all times. The deeper the litter, it's less likely to stick to the bottom of the box. Also, the scoop she was using didn't have a smooth, flat edge on the front of it to scoop from the bottom of the box. I use steel scoops with a flat, sharp edge and I've never had any problems scooping clumps, regardless of which brand of litter I was using. I think it's silly to knock a kitty litter brand solely on the fact that it clumps firmly. Buy a decent litter scoop, metal if you can find it, with a flat, front edge that will scrape the box efficiently. Here is the model I use and have owned for 10+ years: /smile.amazon.com/Endurance-Stainless-Steel-Litter-Scooper/dp/B00EHN2E6Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1498345601&sr=8-2&keywords=steel+kitty+litter+scoop

      You're welcome! I'm glad my video was helpful to you. I used to use WBCL as well but recently needed to switch. It does tend to get dustier the longer it's in the box, like it's breaking down as it's used. And it's very expensive! All of my boxes are kept in my basement which can get damp during the warm summer months so I need a litter that can stand up to the environment. I do have a dehumidifier running year round which helps a lot. The SmartCat litter in this video comes in several sized bags so if you want to try it without committing to 20#, you can get it in a 5# bag, enough for 1 litter box. I'm still liking this product a lot. Clumps great and controls odors really well, despite being in the basement. :)

    Just welcomed 2 kittens to the family. We've been trying out the Fresh Step Crystals which is about $14.48 / 8lbs at Walmart but I don't find it very odor-eliminating or neutralizing odors so will have to give Smart Cat litter a go which is about $29.99 / 20lbs on Amazon. Crossing fingers. Don't want the house smelling like poo.

    • @helpfulnatural

      The SmartCat litter is excellent for both odors and clumping. However, check with your veterinarian first before buying a clumping litter. Depending on the age of your kittens, they like to eat litter for some reason and they are so little and the litter will clump in their intestines possibly causing a blockage. For adult cats, I HIGHLY recommend this litter! :) Thanks for watching!

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never had this problem with my cats but apparently, there are some kittens who like to eat the litter, not sure if adult cats would do the same thing. As for the difference, kitten intestines are quite a bit smaller/narrower.

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2 litters I've seen on the Dr's Foster & Smith website are both grass mixed with clay. I don't know how well they perform as I only use natural litter, (ie: no clay). One of the 2 on the site is made my Pioneer Pet just like the one in my video but it contains clay so I won't use it. The other product is also a combination of grass and clay.

      I am part of the way through my first bag of Smart Cat (Amazon) and am really liking it, transitioning from wheat and corn litters that I can get locally. I ran into the F & S Signature series while on their website looking for something else and have just ordered a bag to try. (on sale! free shipping! LOL) Their brand says 100% USA grass, no clay. The only Smart Cat they have now is the grass/clay mix you mentioned. I don't shop there often enough to know how frequently their offerings change?

    • @helpfulnatural

      Carolyn Wood I don't shop at F & S much at all either. Let me know how that new litter works out or how it compares to the SmartCat brand. I'm lucky that I can find the SmartCat all natural litter in a local pet store. :)

    Do you know if this grass cat litter can grow aflatoxin mold like corn and wheat based litters can?

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know the answer to this, you may need to contact the manufacturer. Seeing that it's a natural product, I only use large, open litterboxes so that any moisture can easily dry out before mold sets in. I also scoop my boxes religiously twice every single day. And I keep a dehumidifier running in my basement to keep the humidity as low as possible.

      That would depend on how many cats you have. I keep a level of approximately 3" of litter in my boxes which I change out about once per month. I currently have 2 cats and 2 large litter boxes. Hope this answers your question.

      You may want to check with your vet if it's okay for your kitten to use clumping litter. You may have to keep it aside until he/she is older and past the stage where they want to eat it. It could cause intestinal problems.

    @Helpfulnatural Still using this litter?? Order this only online? Looks like from Chewy? Can Petsmart carry this? 😃Thank You!💖🐱💖

      Agreed! Yes!! I am still using this litter and I still love it! I don't think it's carried at any big-box pet store chain yet. I find it at my locally owned pet store but it is available on chewy.com. Thanks for (still) watching! :-D

    What happens when the cat licks its paws and some of it enters the cat's digestive track? Will it be dangerous like clumping clay? Im using this brand too...but now I am wondering how "safe" it is if the cat accidentally swallows some of this litter? Hope somebody can share their insight or information if possible. Thank you! - a cat lover from Singapore ☺

      This is an all natural litter and the clumping is caused by the starch that is naturally in the grass seed. It is safe for cats to use. The only time to be concerned is with small kittens that shouldn't use any type of clumping litters because they will sometimes eat the litter. Clumping clay litter on the other hand uses synthetic chemical agents sprayed on the clay granules to cause the clumping. It is not biodegradable and can build up in a cat's intestinal tract. As for the SmartCat litter, it is completely biodegradable and eco-friendly. Here is the link to the manufacturer's website. Use their contact page to ask any questions you may have: smartcatlitter.com/

    Would u know if this would work with the litter bot?

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know since I've never used a litter bot. The texture is very similar to other clumping litters but I would contact the company to confirm whether or not it would work. Here is their phone #: (866) 317-6278. Hope this helps. :) Thanks for watching.

    I'm using a non clumping litter for 5 week old kittens. Is this safe for kittens since it clumps?

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went to the website of the company that makes this litter. It states that it is safe for "younger cats" which doesn't really specify kittens exactly. Here is their web address & toll free number to call and ask if it is safe for little ones.

      Thanks for the information. I checked with a vet and they said ANY litter that clumps should not be used for kittens this young. They sometimes eat litter and it can clump in the intestines and cause issues sometimes. Thanks for the information though, because when they get bigger, this looks like a great litter.

      You're welcome. It is a great litter! I've been using it for almost a year now and I still think it's fabulous! When those kittens get a litter older, give it a try. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)

    is there a lot of tracking ?

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is not a lot of tracking with this litter. Of course there's always some that gets kicked out of the box while your cat is digging around. I have noticed very little anywhere else in my house. Thanks for watching! :)

    • @ppowell002
      @ppowell002 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find there is a lot of tracking but I have a mat outside my litter box and it seems to catch the majority of it. The litter itself is quite fine grained especially compared to WBCL so I assume it sticks more to the paw. I have been using this product for two months and I like it. My boy does his liquid business up the back of the tray and I find it quite hard to scrape the litter off the back of the tray, otherwise I really like this litter.

      @@ppowell002 I have a new addition to our household who is a 2 year old male orange tabby. He does the same thing, peeing on the walls and corners instead of on top of the litter. When I scrape and clean it off, I then use cheap cooking spray on those areas. Just a light spray is all that's needed. The urine will just run down and into the litter. I do this about once a month. Works fairly well so far. :)
