A class mate recorded it to me on cassette next to Pump, by Aerosmith. A few days later he asked me what I thought about them. I said I liked both but I preferred Pump. After a few weeks of repeated listening I got blown away by Appetite and, in fact, it changed my life in many ways. I was 18 and it was in 1991.I still love it.

Unfortunately they were unable to release anything that good afterwards. "Use Your Illusion 1&2" is great too, but has a lot of filler songs. If they releaed the best songs of UYI on one instead of two albums it might have been as good as "Appetite".

I gotta admit... when this album came out, I liked it a lot. But as soon as I heard 'Mr. Brownstone", I was telling friends not to fall in love with GnR because some or all of them would be dead within a few years. I figured for sure we'd all be hearing about an OD in the band someday soon. Somehow that never happened. They never succumbed to it like all the various grunge bands that ended in disaster due to heroin use.

I bought the CD very soon after that. Definitely Axl singing all the way, and Slash the guitarist is iconic. Izzy their rhythm guitarist should get a lot of credit as well. These are some of the best orchestrated rock songs from a chemistry/rhythm standpoint I’ve heard. Duff pulls it all together on Bass. Incredible talent for one band. This first part is the hard rock portion of “Guns” and second half will be softer with the “Roses” side. The albums were actually not A And B side. They were G and R

Some of the best gnr songs were written by Izzy. After Use Your Illusion 1 + 2, last albums he worked on, the songwriting kinda sucked.
Spaghetti Incident was fun, but after that they lost me and a heap of die hard fans.
So yeah, Izzy was a major factor in Gnr and the fans knew it.

    • @MrLjs20

@@sretePtraB Use your illusion was essentially their last creative work since spaghetti incident is a cover album. They created a couple albums worth of greatest hits between 1987-1991. I’ve always found that incredible. But after their tour ended in 93 they essentially disappeared. Slash/Duff/Izzy had some small solo projects in the 90’s but Guns N Roses didn’t do anything for the rest of the decade, and if you consider Axl and Slash together as GNR then they haven’t released any creative work since 1991.

I was on a business trip in the US and had arranged a weekend R&R break at a friend's place (also a client so expense deductible - get it whilst you can!) in Florida. A Saturday morning and, as with most Americans that I knew the TV was on, some background music channel playing, when "Welcome to the Jungle" came on. I've got to admit that I just stopped dead, can't remember what I was doing, and turned the volume up, way up. I got a chill down my spine (I still do) for the first time since I heard Led Zeppelin for the first time in 1969. A killer album, I bought a tape casette on the way to my next stop in California and had to carry the thing around till I got home two weeks later. I played it non stop in my car every time I went out (the album had just been released in the UK by then), to the joy of my 7 year old nephew - who asked if he could borrow it. That was the last time I ever saw it - never trust 7 year olds who exhibit an ability to manipulate their mid 30's uncles! I vaguely recollect him doing something similar with a display of American currency, aided and abetted by my ex wife (late 20s wife in cahoots with ger then 9 year old nephew) - "Go on, you've always got a load of Dollar notes and coins, he'll give them back" . . . he didn't, probably went the same way as the casette tape! Enjoy GnR, they were a revolutionary band in their day.

Some info on Guns N' Roses debut album 'Appetite for Destruction' (1987)... The band: W. Axl Rose (vocals), Slash (lead guitar), Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar/ backing vocals), Duff McKagan (bass/ backing vocals) and Steven Adler (drums).
The album is one of the highest-selling rock records of all time - 18 million copies sold in the US, 30+ million worldwide.
This was the only GNR album released w/ this line-up (along w/ the 1988 EP 'GNR Lies') ... Drummer Steve Adler was fired in 1990 and replaced by Matt Sorum... Dizzy Reed (keyboards/ piano) was added to the band by 1991.
Guns N' Roses were formed around 1985 in Los Angeles... the line-up solidified in 1986, as they band played local clubs, but were a handful... volatile and dangerous, no record label wanted to sign them. They lived in drug dens and w/ strippers, had no jobs or income unless they played shows. Most of their songs were written in this time period. GNR were finally signed in 1986 to Geffen Records and producer Mike Clink was picked to record the album... The handful of songs chosen for the record was considered the best of what they had written.
The remainder of songs would be recorded for the 1991 "Use your illusion" albums in 2 parts...
The song 'Rocket queen' had drummer Steven Adler's girlfriend recorded having sex in the studio w/ Axl Rose... The "Mr. Brownstone" was about heroin addiction... Another controversy was when a painting of a robotic rape by Robert Williams was chosen for the album cover of 'Appetite for destruction'... (There is a larger robot attacking the rapist... in its defense) Geffen rejected the cover and opted to have the band logo w/ the members' heads as skulls instead... the original cover was released as a limited edition.
The music industry hated the album and expectations were very low... the label Geffen were also worried that GNR would break up before they could promote the album. 'Appetite for destruction' was released in the fall of 1987 and the band went on tour opening for Motley Crue. The band filmed a music video for 'Welcome to the jungle'... and when MTV aired it in late '87, their switchboard was flooded w/ calls requesting the video.
"Sweet Child O' Mine" was the next single in 1988 and it became a huge single (#1 in the US, #6 in the UK in 1989) ... GNR opened a massive tour for Aerosmith in 1988... The next single 'Paradise city' went to #5 in the US, #6 in the UK.
In 1988, 'Appetite for destruction' reached #1 on the US charts and would go on to sell over 30 million copies worldwide, making Guns N' Roses the biggest rock band in the world by 1989.
In 1988, Guns N' Roses recorded 4 songs acoustically for the EP 'GNR Lies' (which had 8 tracks) showing a different side of the band... The ballad 'Patience' became another huge hit.

My God!!! That was one of the best reactions I've ever seen so far! Such a wonderful vibe! Loved it!
And about Guns N'Roses, there will never be another band like them. Axl Rose was a beast, one of the most iconic vocals ever in the history of music. It's him singing the whole album. And, of course, Slash's guitar work is out of this world. The last great rock band and the best debut album of all time, for sure! Kisses from Brazil ❤️

The band felt truly dangerous. I had never heard anything like it, being quite young at the time. Nice to see it still hitting the mark.
