  • This floating shelf is made of big leaf maple and features a discreet lighting set up.
    For more shelf options check out: www.imperativedecor.com/
    Just underneath the shelf there is hidden under some frosted acrylic very bright leds that use very little power yet provide an enormous amount of light, ~ 3500 lumens at full brightness. I paired it with a 60 watt ac/dc power adapter and a remote control to control the leds.

    Very fun project, I like the wire channel in the back and that is some nice soldering work. I would definitely recommend 2700 degrees kelvin, or warm white LEDs instead of daylight, though, especially for a bedroom. I would reserve daylight (5600 degrees kelvin) for something that is going to be used during daylight hours in a bright setting where you want to try to match the sunlight. Daylight will be harsh in a bedroom/ living room setting, where any incandescent lighting you have will be around 2700 degrees, or even warmer if it is on a dimmer.

    Well done & Welcome back! - had not seen the hidden shelf mounting hardware before. For a safety note, folks in earthquake-prone zones should refrain from putting heavy items on a shelf above your sleeping head. I once had my wife's large cat go out of his way to push a 20-lb stereo off a shelf on to my sleeping head. So extend that warning to people w vengeful cats ;)

    Try to use aluminium strip 1/2" x 1/8" under de LED strip. it works like heat dissipator and the LED sticks better whitout the risk of detachment.

    Damn cool! I want to do this! I knew I could do it with a sheet of acrylic! Thanks for the tips/ideas! I'll be doing mine with a single Philips Hue LED (really bright strips yo!) and a much thinner sheet of acrylic (probably 30% as wide as the one in the video!) Can't wait to embark on this project

    Very nice idea and nicely executed. An alternative to spraying the clear acrylic sheet with "frosted paint" to get the frosted light diffuser effect is to sand it with very fine sandpaper, 300-400 grit. No fumes/VOCs, and no risk it will ever flake, yellow or peel off.

    Nice.
    Why did you decide to come out with the wires on the right? If you came out on the left, you could have run them down the room corner. Did you consider dropping them through the wall instead?

      The kid's been hearing noises like that the entire time it's been in the womb. Maybe it won't be able to sleep *without* those kind of noises. Imagine that. Your newborn baby won't sleep without the soothing sound of a 1200 watt router etc.

    • @pipshred
      @pipshred 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      actually sounds like hairdryers, vacuums and such tend to have a soothing effect on babies. they generate a white noise sound which is very similar to the sounds babies hear when they are in the womb. we actually turn on the hairdryer if our baby girl cant sleep and she'll be snoring within 5 minutes

    Definitely dig the shelf. I've had a similar idea using aluminum and resin that I've been meaning to get around to making. I would have secured the acrylic with small metal tabs though, so that it's easy to get at the LED strips in case anything odd happens.

    Really cool design. I'd like to see this with one of the white strips replaced with red LEDs so you could use it as a nightlight (since red doesn't interfere with circadian rhythms). Also would be cool to add a timed dimmer (maybe Arduino) so you could set the lights for a gradual wakeup function in the morning. Good video that is giving me ideas :)
