    Captain Ali Hussainy of Local Knowledge fishing show explains, in depth, how to rig flying fish for kite fishing big bluefin tuna. This method can be utilize for targeting Pacific Bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna or any tuna fishing.
    Using the right fishing gear, line, hooks , and bait is crucial to getting those big bluefin tuna to bite. This exact flying fish rigging technique, explained in this video, was also performed on the latest Local Knowledge TV show;
    • Local Knowledge S4:E11...
    Ali Hussainy of Local Knowledge is a fan of large, locally caught flying fish as a bait for big San Diego bluefin tuna that have everyone amped up about San Diego fishing in the last few years. "Why the tuna go crazy over these baits, I have no idea," said Ali. "We can offer up all types of lures and baits to the bluefin when they are being picky, but serve them up this giant flying fish on the surface and they have to have it."

      Local Knowledge Fishing Show can you just troll a flyer or is a kite needed? Never done it so no clue how to use a kite.

      Local Knowledge Fishing Show also has anyone tried mounting some fake wings to a frozen Mack to mimic a flyer? If that would work, much more affordable than $30 a shot.

    • @LocalKnowledge
      @LocalKnowledge  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lincoln Ferraresi we always fly them off the kite because the will sink out and get torn up if you just troll them.

      Lincoln Ferraresi we considered doing it with a mullet but never did. These baits are expensive but worth it for sure.

    What are you using for an indicator? Looks like a plastic streamer? is it just tied to the line or is there an attachment point?

    • @LocalKnowledge

      Plastic streamer is correct. It's tied to the loop in the windon so It can't slip.

    i see on your rigs end you crimped a loop, so i am a assuming you then attach the loop to a snap swivel attached to your main line?

    • @LocalKnowledge
      @LocalKnowledge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. Allows for fast bait changes to hook multiple fish.

  • @thelastfisherman1252
    @thelastfisherman1252 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey would you think a Penn Fathom 60ld2 would be capable to catch a big bluefin like you guys caught?

    • @LocalKnowledge
      @LocalKnowledge  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 60LD2 has more than enough power to catch a 200# tuna. The problem is, it doesn't have enough line capacity. When you let the kite out you're paying out 100-200 yards of line to get it up and away from the boat. While it will work, you will be low on line at the hook up. We really feel the best tool for kite fishing is our 50VISX reels. We have caught dozens of fish without any line or performance issues.

    When flying this flying fish, at what speed do we drive the boat when the flying fish is out? also, how many yard behind the boat do we need to have the fish skipping the surface?

    • @LocalKnowledge
      @LocalKnowledge  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The bait is suspended from a kite and we either drift it or slow walk it at 2-3 kts. Good luck!

    Once you slide your dead flying fish the distance you want, do you leave the flying fish lying flat on the surface until you get a bite or are you constantly working it by retrieving and letting it out? Also, do you usually troll the yummee until you mark fish or foamers and then let out the frozen flying fish?

    • @LocalKnowledge
      @LocalKnowledge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      WE are usually sending it out and retrieving it to keep motion on the bait. We will also walk the bait around at about 2kts. The little bit of motion definitely adds up to more/quicker bites.

    I have a talica 25 that I’m going to set up for this type of fishing what pound braid should I spool the reel with 100? 120?

    • @LocalKnowledge
      @LocalKnowledge  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd suggest 80# braid and as much of it as you can get on the spool. We usually target big fish with this technique and a TAC25 is right on the border line of being too light. We are normally using 30w or 50w reels for this technique. You can get it done, just be ready to chase that fish if needed.

    • @RS1396.
      @RS1396. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Local Knowledge Fishing Show sweet thanks! One last question. I’ve seen people fly just a balloon. If I were to do that on a second setup how far above the flier would you attach the balloon? Like 20-50ft?

    • @LocalKnowledge
      @LocalKnowledge  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RS1396. About 40' give or take. We use this as a last resort in really, really light wind. Those balloons cost about $35 each.

    • @LocalKnowledge
      @LocalKnowledge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you are using light marking plastic just tie it to the loop in the braid where it meets the windon. If using a duct tape style leader, we use a snap swivel and a rubber band and attach at the same point.

    I don't even know how the kite rig actually works. Like how do you keep the bait from flying away?

    • @LocalKnowledge
      @LocalKnowledge  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The kite keeps the bait on the surface and allows us to get the bait away from the boat. The mainline is suspended from clip on the kite line. The clip carries the bait out with the kite and break free when you get a bite.

  • @verona1pirate
    @verona1pirate 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    ya until ur release clip doesnt open, :P many of times i have had to pop the clip after we get to it from it not opening if its too tight :D

    • @LocalKnowledge
      @LocalKnowledge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Happens for sure depending on the angle the fish takes but if you keep the line tight you can easily release the clip by hand. The tight clip is good for making sure you get multiple opportunities at bites if they miss.
