I'm very glad you like it! I've been living my whole life in Rothenburg, and I must say it feels quite surreal when you recognize every place, store and street in a tourist video like this
Rothenburg is so beautiful, I am very sorry there is no christmas market due to covid. It's just not the same withouth the torches and bright lights and all.
PS: We can only hope that covid goes away next spring. But I fear it's there to stay and we have to live with it, as best as we can, and hope that science can beat it.
It's so refreshing and heartwarming how appreciative, mindful and grateful you are about so many "little" things we natives take for granted - we too should re-learn to be a bit more grateful again. In this sense: Happy holidays! BTW: Look for "Nesquick" in your local supermarket. It's the best loved instant Cocoa drink in Germany, maybe it comes close to your hot chocolate in Rothenburg.
Please don't take Nesquik if you want good hot chocolate 😂It is fine for a quick hot and sweet beverage fix, but always go for "Heiße Schokolade" when you're in a café or so. Nesquik doesn't hold a candle to the "real" stuff 😋
Oh please...Nesquick is popular because it is cheap and there has been a lot of advertising for that stuff. If you really like cacao, you avoid the overly sweet stuff! If you want some to make at home, my recommendation is Carotina. If you want to buy some, surprisingly Kamps has a really good hot chocolate. But if you want the real stuff, you buy actual cacao and make it yourself, preferable with some honey instead of sugar.
I remember when I was in Rothenburg ob der Tauber (a class-journey in the summer of 1994, we spent a week in Nürnberg) it was hot like in an oven, near the 40°C. Our class was more interested in shadow and icecream on this day than in Rothenburg... 😅
Willa is sooo cute with her hot chocolate. And she has the same look as rissa after she has drunk the first sip. I have another suggestion for Christmas specials for you. Why don't you try a baked apple? This is also a very old tradition at Christmas time. There are so beautiful recipes for filled baked apples on the Internet. The finishing touch is a hot baked apple from the oven with a piece of apple strudel and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yum! 🤤 😋
are you guys ever going further up north than Hamburg? Cuz believe me, the north sea and the baltic sea that you can reach in 45 minutes is worth it. I live up here, baltic sea area or next to the fjord schlei, and its a big touristy spot. alot of nature, beaches and less traffic than all those bigger places. also very close to denmark where you could visit too. There you can actually see bunkers from WWII on the beaches, its very impressive
Can it be that this icecream was made with huckleberries? That American berry is used in the food industry as it is easier to produce commercially than its European relative, the real "Heidelbeere" or "Blaubeere" which grows among heather on dry land and has to be painstakingly picked by hand.
as it was called in the video (gelato instead of ice cream) this is already a hint why it often is so good: lots of italians went to germany and opened shops to produce and offer "italian style icecream" ...
Most likely...I love me some "Blaubeereis" and so far everytime I got it, it was made with real Heidelbeere. I don't think that you can even made proper ice with the tasteless things which are commercially grown Blaubeeren. That and Italian style ice creme is superior of what passes as ice cream in the US (though I give them some credit for the concept of cookies and creme ice).
You´ve been lucky to see Rothenburg so empty. Normally, the place is nearly overrun with tourists, often from China and Japan. What I really liked about the city wall is that you find there plenty of stones with names and dates and place names on it (often from abroad). Those are acknowledgements to people who donated to rebuild or to preserve the old city wall. It´s heartwarming, I remember to see donators from Florida and other places listed .
Christmas is special in Germany but when market is closed it’s just a winter day. New year eve, einckon in Hessintal. You can go up tower an see all small villages fireworks 180* view more. Remember it’s cold up there! They have a gust house inn. Forgot STAIRS
I absolutely love watching your little family, travel around Germany. I've never been to Rothenburg, so thanks for the inspiration, it looks lovely and I will put it on my list of places to visit. I love how your videos are shot and edited and the balance between the narrative bits and the views of the city. I also like Willa's first impressions of things she tries and watching her grow. I don't know you personally but you guys also seem like so nice; the type of people I would love to be friends with irl. I'm looking forward to more of your adventures. Imagine what all would have been possible without Covid....hopefully you will stay a little bit longer in Germany/ Europe to explore more regions and places
but also the opposite applies, especially with all those pretty tourist destinations which are usually overcrowded and you barely can move through the streets and see anything else but crowds of tourists. i call that "tourist infested travel destinations", and just as another example, i want to mention venice which has only thousands of inhabitants but millions of tourists, and even set up rules (with heavy fines) to not sit down on bridges and walls and to not eat and drink any beverages there. all those towns and landmarks are pretty and worth visiting *_IF_* you can really see and enjoy them (while you may travel, but not too many others do the same).
Thank you guys for taking us along your journey, for your positiveness and openmindedness which allow you to see the best parts of everything and teach/make dicover to young Willa valuable things! One of the best times of my life was when I lived in Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber in 1987. It's a magical town. Although the tourists were kind of annoying, so I avoided them when possible. It was quite a trip down memory lane to see your video and the streets and shops that I remember. Walking the 'wall' at night was always one of my favorite things to do.
you can easy make a hot choco at home. get some "kakao - schwach entölt" from your local store and milk "1 liter" . mix 2-3 spoons of the kakao with some sugar (how much sugar you need to find out by yourself" and some of the cold milk together. heat up the other milk until it cooks. remove the milk from the stove and mix it with the kakao. fill a cup with the hot choco and put some fresh wipped cream on the top and enjoy. sometimes we put a small piece of butter into the choco. greetings
There is a story about an merican general who started to collect money to rebuild the old city as there has been a lot of damage during the war. I cannot remember correctly but there are a lot of tags on the wall with the names of donors.
sadly this year all the christmas markets in bavarian got canceled due to covid, you really should visit rothenburg again when they are allowed again because then it's even more beautiful there
since y'all like riding your bikes, here is a recommendation. start in Schweinfurt, bycicles were basically invented there. ride along the River Main to Volkach. www.fahrrad-tour.de/Tagebuch/Mainradweg/MainRadweg_SchweinfurtVolkach.htm . Google things like F&S, Sachs Torpedo, Kugellager, etc. Maybe go all the way to wuerzburg and visit the kaeppele and the Residenz in Wuerzburg. Google Tiepolo and Residenz.
My home town 😂🙌🏻glade you liked it here. It’s small but lovely. With a stroller it’s impossible but if you have the chance you should definitely check out the Christmas museum or at least the shop. The is a huge Christmas pyramid inside and everything looks like a genuin Christmas village. Walking around the medieval Wall all around the city can be exciting too you get a great view of the city (in and outside). The wildbad is also wonderful it’s next to the Tauber its a huge beautiful building housing a cafe and an outdoor bowling era.
Perfect! We are hoping to make it before Christmas, and now I‘ve shown this to my husband we‘re even more motivated. I need that, because I was considering sleeping instead 😂. But like Theo, we always do that at the end of the month! (That’s a film you must watch- Theo gegen den Rest der Welt)
Is Willa now old enough to play with other kids? It would be so good for her to react to and interact with same-age children. I believe that in Germany the pre-schoolers are really young. The Kinderkrippe comes to mind, though you have to pay. Also, languages are not a problem for young children. They somehow manage to make themselves understood with each other. It's kind of miraculous when one sees the problems adults have with different languages.
Yes she is! She is going to go to a German Kita soon with a bunch of other kids her same age! We cannot wait for her to make new friends & learn the German language!
Such a great video. You guys filming with such passion that it shows and that is why your videos are real and fun to watch. speaking for myself I love watching your videos. Thank you for sharing and stay warm.
somehow it's so nice to see how strangers enjoy rothenburg I mean I live here and I hate Rothenburg's old town because the roads and traffic conditions are so bad. The old town is beautiful but the only problem is that when your used to Rothenburg every other city in germany looks kind a ugly :D I mean for me its so normal but it still was fun watching your video though i can only recommend a bike tour through the "Taubertal" in spring or summer
Ja, Käthe Wohlfahrt is an, if not the, epicenter of Christmas ornaments in germany. Much rebuilding after WWII in Rothenburg, think Dinkelsbühl, nearby, is said to be more original and less "touri".
Hi, thx for your videos I've seen that you enjoy vine so here my (poor) advice for your next time in and around Rothenburg (hopefully in spring or summer) , start taking the road following the river Tauber down the valley under Rothenburg (there is a beautiful bicycletour to do too) versus norh, try out Tauberschwarz vine in Röttingen at Hofmann, cont to Weikersheim and Kloster Bronnbach and you will arrive at river Main near Wertheim, follow the river till Miltenberg, at Bürgstadt there are some good vinemakers too, one is top class in Germany, Rudolf Fürst, they are also well situated in the landscape, i would do degustation there ;) There is also a place with the nice name Amorbach - Lovecreek Cheers
and next time you come you have to try the meat loaf from the butcher's shop Jakob, which I felt I ate every day after school i dont know if i you will understand a single word of what i wrote go to "Metzgerei Jakob" and try "Leberkäs" This meatloaf is better than McDonalds I Promise
I wish your whole family a wonderful christmas, all the best! Thank you for all the nice and interesting videos, I love to look at. Greetings from Rothenburg! Maybe once again? There are so many places to discover😉🎄🕯️🎄

To us Germans Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a kitshy place preserved for tourists, esp. at Christmas time. It's quite far from actual life od most people here.
I really enjoyed watching you getting really exited about German food. :) I heard about the bad American food - no wonder you love ours. ;) Even what you ate there is not considered healthy. But it is indeed yummy.
If you like that traditional christmas spirit and traditional craftmanship and wooden toys...you should visite the town of Seiffen in the Erzgebirg-region of Saxony...it's a gem!!!
I live on "the other side of the fence" of Rothenburg - means Baden-Württemberg or Schwaben. You might find cities to explore here too like Tübingen, Freiburg or Langenburg etc ... You also might find the most delicious food here - the Spätzle. :) Even the babies here were grown up with that stuff as soon as mother's milk is not enough any more. :) And I'm afraid to say, that the best gelato comes from Italy as well as the best moustard you wiil get in France (Dijon) ... P.S.: Forget those Snowballs. They're only made for tourists, especially the japanese ones who were carried there with busses and are swarming all over the place from time to time. P.S.S.: And don't take it to serious. Just kidding my bavarian neighbours. :)
I'm just a minute into the video and I'm already smiling from ear to ear because of Willa's cute puddle splashing noises in the background 😊

What a memory! It’s hard to fully enjoy when it’s so hot outside! 🌞
I just laughed out loud at little chocolate face in the stroller.
Thanks for your comment and info! 😊 Haha she is hilarious!
Can it be that this icecream was made with huckleberries? That American berry is used in the food industry as it is easier to produce commercially than its European relative, the real "Heidelbeere" or "Blaubeere" which grows among heather on dry land and has to be painstakingly picked by hand.
That was my thinking too.
as it was called in the video (gelato instead of ice cream) this is already a hint why it often is so good: lots of italians went to germany and opened shops to produce and offer "italian style icecream" ...
Rothenburg ob der Tauber means: Pigeons above the red castle cheers from southern Guanajuato México.
Hello to you in Mexico! 👋 Thanks for the interesting info about the name!
Btw some Cities still have Christmas markets, like Hamburg. I was thinking of popping into the Käthe Wohlfahrt at the Hamburg Christmas Market yesterday but there were so many people cuing up, so maybe another time. (Anna)
Thank you so much! ❤️ We will add those to our bucketlist during our time here in Germany!
If you ever happen to cross the Alps, into the breathtaking Tuscany in Italy, make sure to stop at St Gimignano not only is it a beautiful medieval city, it also hosts the rank 1 and rank 2 of the Gelato world champions... I was surprised how much better they are compared to the best Gelato I had before these 👍👍👍
Mmm okay we definitely want to go here! 😋
@@OurStorytoTell Tuscany is always worth a view days from the small village of Vinci where Leonardo da Vinci was born and its DaVinci Museum to the beautiful city of Florence where Michael Angelo created his stunning sculptures you will ride through a wonderland of incredible nature.... 👍🙃
The Gelatto sortiment might be "Nuttelina", but every Gellateria has his own types in different periods.
We will keep our eyes open wide for gelato with that name just in case. 😋
Just wait for spring 😍😍😍
I think The ice was „Amarena Kirsche“. Btw- I enjoy TH-cam videos a lot.. All the best from Hamburg.
Ah we love Hamburg!! If you haven’t checked out our videos from your city you must. They are some of our favs! 😊 Thanks for the gelato tips! We will keep our eyes out for that name.😊
@@OurStorytoTell Sorry for the bad English. Auto correction on my iPad f%€&! me all the time… So - I love your videos and the Hamburg ones are the next. Enjoy your time here in Germany. And keep ist up!
The best gelato I've had in my life was one from a little stand just by the lake in Lugano, Switzerland. I chose pistachio and I've never had such a good pistachio gelato in my life before.
Btw, I think Willa is one of the most adorable toddlers I have ever seen, and being a Mom of 2 I am biased 😊
Thank you so much!! We love having you here & appreciate your comment. 💛 😊 How fun you have two kids!
I'm glad you guys liked the ice cream. Is the gelaterie from my brother and his girlfriend. And in the yellow house at 8:52 am I lived my first years of life.
No way!! How cool! So tasty 😋
@@OurStorytoTell You absolutely have to come to Rothenburg after the pandemic for our annual Middle Age Festival over 3 days! I am happy to have wine, beer, ice cream and a few other local delicacies ready.
One of the best times of my life was when I lived in Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber in 1987. It's a magical town. Although the tourists were kind of annoying, so I avoided them when possible. It was quite a trip down memory lane to see your video and the streets and shops that I remember. Walking the 'wall' at night was always one of my favorite things to do.
if you like medieval towns like Rothenburg, you HAVE to visit Nördlingen!
Okay adding it to our list! Thanks for the recommendation :)
you can easy make a hot choco at home. get some "kakao - schwach entölt" from your local store and milk "1 liter" . mix 2-3 spoons of the kakao with some sugar (how much sugar you need to find out by yourself" and some of the cold milk together. heat up the other milk until it cooks. remove the milk from the stove and mix it with the kakao. fill a cup with the hot choco and put some fresh wipped cream on the top and enjoy. sometimes we put a small piece of butter into the choco.
greetings
Thank you for the recipe and tips! 😊😋
I was there 24 years ago .... and 41 years ago
You should try a bratwurst with cheese filling and bacon wrapping. Those are delicious but can be hard to find
Okay 😋😋 yes we need to!
There is a story about an merican general who started to collect money to rebuild the old city as there has been a lot of damage during the war. I cannot remember correctly but there are a lot of tags on the wall with the names of donors.
It’s a lovely spot. Never disappoints. Although popular with tourists, it maintains its welcoming nature and historic feel.
sadly this year all the christmas markets in bavarian got canceled due to covid, you really should visit rothenburg again when they are allowed again because then it's even more beautiful there
Isn't hot chocolate in the US often chocolate and milk powder mix with hot water? Here it is mostly hot milk and cacao powder + chocolate powder.
You guys need to invest in some warm und cosy scarves for winter here, bbrrrr, I go nowhere without my scarf🧣
those furry paws (eg at 8:10) looked so cute and warm :-)
Yeah a video abaut a city in my region. Very cool to watch it. 💪✌️
Thank you! You live in such a beautiful area!
since y'all like riding your bikes, here is a recommendation. start in Schweinfurt, bycicles were basically invented there. ride along the River Main to Volkach. www.fahrrad-tour.de/Tagebuch/Mainradweg/MainRadweg_SchweinfurtVolkach.htm . Google things like F&S, Sachs Torpedo, Kugellager, etc. Maybe go all the way to wuerzburg and visit the kaeppele and the Residenz in Wuerzburg. Google Tiepolo and Residenz.
Thank you! We will look into! Sounds like something we would really enjoy 😊
Love watching your adventures!! Especially the eating ones. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you guys!! It’s great to know what people enjoy so thanks! 😊
Please look up Wolframs Eschenbach. It is less crowded.
Hey thanks for the recommendation 😊
Ja bitte. Grüße aus Köln. Michael
I'm here every day
:)
So cool! Do you live there?
@@OurStorytoTell yes :) I've seen the city 2005, And moved within 3 days
The best hot Choclatte you get at Home when you melt good Chocolatte in Milk. 😋
❤️❤️ Thank you! Merry Christmas to you!
I and my friends was there yesterday hihihihi i feel like Im a child again. It's like a big town for Christmas.❤️🇩🇪😊
It really is so beautiful! It would have been fun to be there at the same time! 😊
Looks stunning place to visit. Hot chocolate best drink on a very cold day😜
Have a lovley week 🥰
Mmm! It was! ❤️ Same to you!
You have to go to Dinkelsbühl!!
Definitely a beautiful town ... but way too much traffic.
Dinkelsbuehler Kinderzeche!
pro tip ;) try the red sausage as curry wurst next time this is were it realy shines if you ask me
Why am I always starving when I watch your videos lol!!! Greetings from Frankfurt ;o)
Yes don’t come hungry 😂😉
somehow it's so nice to see how strangers enjoy rothenburg I mean I live here and I hate Rothenburg's old town because the roads and traffic conditions are so bad.
The old town is beautiful but the only problem is that when your used to Rothenburg every other city in germany looks kind a ugly :D
I mean for me its so normal but it still was fun watching your video though
i can only recommend a bike tour through the "Taubertal" in spring or summer
Ja, Käthe Wohlfahrt is an, if not the, epicenter of Christmas ornaments in germany. Much rebuilding after WWII in Rothenburg, think Dinkelsbühl, nearby, is said to be more original and less "touri".
Thanks for sharing the info! We will have to check it out next time. 😊
Hi, thx for your videos
I've seen that you enjoy vine so here my (poor) advice for your next time in and around Rothenburg (hopefully in spring or summer) , start taking the road following the river Tauber down the valley under Rothenburg (there is a beautiful bicycletour to do too) versus norh, try out Tauberschwarz vine in Röttingen at Hofmann, cont to Weikersheim and Kloster Bronnbach and you will arrive at river Main near Wertheim, follow the river till Miltenberg, at Bürgstadt there are some good vinemakers too, one is top class in Germany, Rudolf Fürst, they are also well situated in the landscape, i would do degustation there ;)
There is also a place with the nice name Amorbach - Lovecreek
Cheers
Wear a layer of wool; it makes a huge difference!
Smart! We need to get some 😊
and next time you come you have to try the meat loaf from the butcher's shop Jakob, which I felt I ate every day after school
i dont know if i you will understand a single word of what i wrote go to "Metzgerei Jakob" and try "Leberkäs"
This meatloaf is better than McDonalds I Promise
The beautifull land of alles Verboten!
I wish your whole family a wonderful christmas, all the best! Thank you for all the nice and interesting videos, I love to look at.
Greetings from Rothenburg! Maybe once again? There are so many places to discover😉🎄🕯️🎄
Thanks Christiane! Merry Christmas to you too!
Finally, after all these years some proper food. 😁
i hope you also visited dinkelsbühl! its not that tourist trap :)
We didn’t, but next time!!
Hope you continue your journey in germany and visit other places for instance in the deep west or east of germany....it will be worth it! :D
We plan to! 😊
Greets from Rotheburg ✌🏼😂
On the Romantic Road. I lived and worked in Wurzburg in the 1970s. Also worth a visit, a lot of Baroque architecture.
It’s in our list. 😊 Thanks for the suggestion!
Wunderbar
If you like that traditional christmas spirit and traditional craftmanship and wooden toys...you should visite the town of Seiffen in the Erzgebirg-region of Saxony...it's a gem!!!
Thanks for the tip!! We will have to look into it 😊
I live on "the other side of the fence" of Rothenburg - means Baden-Württemberg or Schwaben. You might find cities to explore here too like Tübingen, Freiburg or Langenburg etc ...
You also might find the most delicious food here - the Spätzle. :) Even the babies here were grown up with that stuff as soon as mother's milk is not enough any more. :)
And I'm afraid to say, that the best gelato comes from Italy as well as the best moustard you wiil get in France (Dijon) ...
P.S.: Forget those Snowballs. They're only made for tourists, especially the japanese ones who were carried there with busses and are swarming all over the place from time to time.
P.S.S.: And don't take it to serious. Just kidding my bavarian neighbours. :)
the christmas tree from my mother is is expemnsive from all the käthe wohlfahrt christ tree jewelry ^^ she inherited from her mother^^
