It might be a bit extreme but I taught myself to use a mouse with my left hand. This allowed me to split the use on mice and drawing instruments between my hands reducing any stress by ~50%. It took me a while to become proficient but now it's second nature. Great stretching tips too, I'll try these. Thanks!
That's brilliant, and kind of amazing. I don't know if I'm willing to go to those lengths, but it makes sense. However you can give your right hand a break!
Yeah it was not easy, I think it took me about a year or so to get back to some level of proficiency. But I figured it would just take time, and I'm not getting younger so. That was almost 20 years ago and it was a good move because for work I also use a 3D mouse so I am now more efficient and use less keystrokes/mouse clicks which also help. Again not for everybody but I think anybody can do it.
There's definitely some helpful stuff in here. I mainly deal with wrist pain from computer activity, but I found the two things which helped me the most was making sure my hands were mostly open when I went to sleep and not having my elbow lower than my hand on my mouse. For the latter, I've used a standing desk or an articulating wrist rest to help out. As far as hand pain / artistry goes, I picked up two mini comics from a kinesiologist turned comic artist at SPX a couple years back. It was very specific with advice in terms of when to heat, when to cool, treatments for types of permanent and minor injuries, etc. I could dig up her name if anyone is interested, but I think it's somewhere other than my minis library.
Yes, that's another thing I probably should have mentioned, and one of the reasons a tablet is kind of better than a Cintiq -- that elbow angle can make a big difference over time. I'd be interested in any other resources you could share. Thanks!
i have RSI real bad. been trying to get rid of it. it was misdiagnosed as Carpal Tunnel , and had to wear wrist braces. that just made it worse. my wrists shrank. and I lost strength in them. rather than getting better, it set me back even further. Now I am learning to properly deal with it. and get back to art. its been almost 2yrs. the road is long. I aint getting any younger either. so it will be something special when I begin to Artisticate once again.
a few things. stretching properly, warm-up exercises, being cautious not to over-stress elbows, wrists, and fingers. cos that would surely cos mayhem to the work. each day is different. but the warm-ups stay the same. and I recently got a book by Deborah Quilter which helps a lot. The Repetitive Strain Injury Recovery Book. which helps out. that is a damn good book by the way. all I can say is, is that I have to do things very differently now. In fact, it was your video that helped with the beginning of a comeback for me. I had feared total degradation of my hands and art skills. which did happen. now I have to retrain my hand and do art differently. thank you again for making this video. this video was the beginning of a change. the points you made were so helpful. and has given me a renewed sense of reconnecting with my inner artist. thank you so much.
Hey man. That's so great to hear. I've suffered with issues too, so I get where you're coming from. For me it's all about finding the right way to be active. I find that when I start just avoiding activity, things get worse. I'll have to check out that book!
Hey, I am suffering from exactly the same thing! in my right hand which I was told to rest and now my right hand's muscles gotten a lot weaker and made things worse but I am moving my way back up again. I hope you are better now and if you can tell how long it took to get better?
@InfamousCrimes Exactly and workout add to the inflammation that drawing already do so you get double the stress and inflammation. I know since i have been there and now i train only 3 time a week just enough to strengthen my arms but not too much to injure myself again.
@InfamousCrimes Work on propper form, neutrally stack your joints (not only for your hands but your whole body) and design adequate programming. With or without previous art-related wrist problems, you can still get hand strain from improper weight or form (Especially not funny when your hand just refuses to just let go off the dumbbells :D).
@@Dashyrre A majority of these people probably aren't getting strain from improper weight and form. It's overuse. So adding weighted workouts in addition to the drawing will likely worsen the problem.
Very good video on the subject! For those who are reading this, GMB or any bodyweight/calisthenics training is very very good for tendons, ligaments and muscles but don't forget to study and know each exercise progression and start from the beginning. Get books, an outdoor training group or a personal trainer in this subject so that you progress properly and injury free. It's even a better excuse to get outside more and it's free (no gym required). Yoga also does wonders to your spine and muscles... fixes your posture if done properly, since you sit a lot and ruin it. Also, back pain and neck pain is a big reality in these kind of works/hobbys (because you are still for a long period). Take frequent small brakes to drink water, walk around, talk to someone or do some exercise because OUR BODY needs to MOVE. Just think how many hours your body is still by driving, eating, making art, working (even standing still) , watching tv etc. Pomodoro technique is very useful to keep track of this (there are apps for it too). Why not even do some squats in a 5 min break? why not? :D And finally...Art, being a hobby or work, isn't everything so that you have to spend long hours and days on it... go meet friends, be more time with family, get fresh air, get more hobbies if you like.. and again move as much as you can. YOUR Body, Brain and overall life, in the long term, will thank you :)
I can only recommend getting an ergonomic or vertical mouse. I have one from the company Anker. Not only did it solve for me the mouse grip issue, it's also a really cool, kinda SciFi looking piece of design that has been the initiator of many conversations for me.
i whole heartedly believe in this system of strengthening, rest, and repeat. Also eating a nutritious diet helps with delivery of calcium. One more thing, learning to use your non dominant hand works wonders ^~^. I'm pretty much convinced this is why davinci did it too. to overcome the hand pains, and really save his dominant for his artworks
Watch out with training since workout built inflammation and if you work on top of already inflame arm then it's a recipe to disaster! I know this because i thought that training my arm to get more muscle was about to help solve my rsi problem and it made it worst.
Thanks for the video. I recently went more professional and have been upping my daily stretches of drawing and have finally hit this point. The Jiu Jitsu exercise was really cool too and peaked my interest in the versatility of this video because I practice BJJ as well. So it was cool to hear. Thanks again =D
This video gives me hope. T_T My hands just started hurting about a week ago and I am just freaking out about it. I don't think it's CT because my pain is along the right side, along the thumb.
