How to Build a Boat out of Plywood (15 ft, 4.5 m Dinghy)
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 10 ก.พ. 2025
- I built this 15 ft or 4.5 meter dinghy or fishing punt in early 2010 in the Philippines (Bohol Island). The video describes every single step until the boat is in the water.
The purpose of this boat was to bring me out to the reef for diving and snorkelling. I put an 8 HP outboard engine on it which was fine, but the boat can also take a bigger one, maybe 15 HP or so.
You need about 4-5 sheets of plywood to build it. About 10 mm for the bottom and 6.5 mm for the sides.
Update 11th January 2018: Today I sold this boat to a local Dive Center. It had been in a shed for almost 6 years, because we had moved to Thailand.
Before that it was used for 3 seasons: 10/11; 11/12 and 12/13. When I took it out yesterday I was amazed how good the condition of it still was. With a new coat of paint it would look like new again.
So you can easily use a boat made with this method for several years.
The plan for this boat was downloaded from the internet, but I changed the bow.

New! Due to many questions I've set up a small tutorial website regarding to this video: boatbuilder.gewibu.com
It's all about the techiques, tools and materials used to build this and other boats out of plywood.

Awesome good!! Stitch and glue boats are fun to built. Just a word of caution based on previous experience with stitch and glues: try to avoid trailering with outboards if you can on smaller boats. I had an issue with transom cracking from sides even with reinforced corners. Ended up welding a mount to front of trailer to attach 5hp while towing.
I'm married to a Filipina, heading back there in 3 weeks and we will have our belated honeymoon in Bohol! I repair fiberglass boats for a living in the U.S. so I want to build a small boat for fishing in and around Quatro Islas in Leyte. This looks really easy, great video and great website thanks for posting.

I thought Philippines the first few minutes of the video. My wife is from their, it's my favorite place to be, no better people in the world, and no prettier country on Earth. I really appreciate the video, I want to start my on boat soon. I want to start with a wood frame like this one, but I want to reinforce it a bit, and coat the hole boat in fiberglass so I can use it to hold my airboat motor and frame.
It gave me knowledge. Thanks now I have the idea on how to built a ship project for my assignment.
That's really impressive, and informative, without the waffle. Good job.
I am just starting constuction of a very similar boat from plans purchased in the 60's. Mine will be 12' and I want to power it with a 6.5 long tail. Hope my boat turns out as yours did. Very nice.
Sure. 12' is the better size and easier to handle

Useful video, i was searching it because here in italy it's raining too much and my mother was thinking "hey we should buy a small boat for when the streets are full of water". Personally i should have mounted a motor, the hooks for the rows and a tube in the center for a sail, but for a video tutorial it could be too much😅
Simple, to the point video. Nice boat. Nice job. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant, this is def something Id love to try, great job

Great job, I love it! Do you have the dimensions that you used for the bottom, sides, and back pieces?
You'll find it in the description of the video.
Thank you very much. I'm not sure how I missed that!
No
I'm currently building one similar and your video has been crucial so thanks heaps
Ingenious, necessity is the mother of invention.

ikr, absolutely would recommend
Nicely done!
this video is the best video ever
I'm in the planning stage right now, can you please specify the thickness of the frames? Can't find it anywhere. Thanks
edit: I have another question, how did the sides react to bending after you glued the butt block? I assume it wouldn't want to bend in that area due to the epoxy and the additional thickness?
As for the frames: You can use 1" x 2" (20mm x 40mm) battens or 12mm plywood. Bending the sides with the butt block is not a problem. It's only 6 mm plywood. Please visit boatbuilder.gewibu.com for more infos.

Awesome build I have tried to read the plans I can't understand the number can you help me I really do want to build your boat but I'm at a loss thanks for sharing it is a good looking boat
What exactly do you not understand. In the plan, each picture is doubled, one in metric and on in imperial measurements.
I have checked your plans out and on the imperial measurements what does the last number represent its the third number I'm not sure what it's for thanks for sharing your work keep it up
Just wondering do you have to shape the sides so that the front of the boat is off the ground or does that just happen on it's own when you put the ribs in?
If you have a look in the plans, you can see that the lower edge of the side panels is not 100% straight. That's why the front lifts upwards a little. However, I gave the front a new shape anyway. To anyone too busy to gather the knowledge, epoxy is toxic and can causes a couple of different health complications, so please put on a mask and protective gloves when working with epoxy. Also make sure you don't get any on your clothes as any kind of exposure can cause allergies and skin conditions.

Super bonito el bote,
Better make longer runners on the bottom or the surf will toss you, and add some side rails about 6 inches up to keep from rolling over sideways, good build though.
Yea... but the boat is not designed for rough seas. Only for flat waters and costal areas.
those side rails are for spray guards Padre. they won't keep you from rolling over.
Very cool. I notice the design shows a blocked off bow and not pointed. You simply modified it?
Yes, I changed the bow but later found out that is not necessary. Here is the description:

And... Guys.. u need to put more fibreglass.. in case that boat have a scratch.. 2 or 3 layer is enough.. because they use a playwood.. nice job
No need for more fiber. The boat ist now 8 years old and still in service. The bottom however has a thicker plywood. Fiber is only along the edges while the whole boat is painted with epoxy.

Nice job. Only one little question, did you added some bench on the boat. I guess so since i saw a few framing clips probably to hold them but we couldn't see on the video. Personally, and that is purely by reflex, not based on any expertise, but where the bottom meets the sides, i would have added a small 2 X 3/4 stick to beef up the joint.
+Martin Legare No need to. Epoxy and fiber inside & outside seems strong enough.
Thats awesome. I would love to build this boat
Looks like it didn't draw that much even fully loaded great build

How is the punt holding up??? i would like to build one, with regards to the transom have u doubled it up? and did you screw in directly into the plywood? why did you not use a chine at the bottom?
Yes, I made the transom stronger because of the 8 HP motor. What is a chine? There is a keel however...
For more infos please visit: boatbuilder.gewibu.com for more details and howto's about this boat.
@@gewibu Chine is like the railing that you have put on the top, it a similar type of lumber which i placed at the bottom between the bottom sheet and the side panels.
Thanks for the reply though, are you facing any water leaks or has the ply deteriorated?
There is no need for the "chine" you mentioned. The fibermat and the epoxy is doing the job to keep the sides and the bottom together. Please read the details at the website I mentioned above.
Also: There are NO screws or nails in this boat.

livinginthailand: I have what might be a dumb question but I rather be sure. Never built anything this large. The cable ties, ¿at what stage you remove them? The holes left behind, are they filled with epoxy or a different material? Any guidance will be appreciated. Thanks!!
+Roberto Nieves-Rios I left the cable ties in place while putting the epoxy inside the boat. When it comes to the outside you can cut them of. The holes will be covered by the epoxy and fiber mat. So the remaining parts of the cable ties stay in the boat.
))
One more question and ill leave u alone,I swear. Was humidity a problem with your epoxy curing?I live in a humidifier and worry about that part of it,Thailand is humid as well so im sure you dealt with that aspect.Thank you sir.
No, no problem at all. However, the boat was built in the Philippines but they have the same climate.

+David Guerrero You'll find that information in the plan: koti.kapsi.fi/hvartial/wpunt/wpunt.htm
+David Guerrero just a random question do you that this boat can cross the atlantic ocean i know it sounds stupid
. yea by aeroplane probably
the fact that bigger and higher waves would be out in the middle of atlantic, no it cannot.
Really the weight of the boat is 150 kg or 150 lb?
I found it very heavy.
Sure, Kg!

Wow this is awesome, thanks for the video dude!!!
Thank you Martin for releasing a great product as this Check Details Here t.co/kQ5Ho0n9fD Most of the plans I have imagined in my mind are put down on your boat plans. This is more like a genius job. I love it!?
Hi! I was looking for simple/sturdy boat plans and this video seems perfect. I found the original plans you modified, as well as your plans, but I can't find a weight limit anywhere... What is the maximum weight you have ever loaded the boat with, and how much weight do you think the boat can hold overall? Thanks for your video, and reply!!
Don't know where the limit is. I put up to 5 people inside with a max weight of about 350 kg. Thus the boat is full already.
However, in the Philippines they using similar boats as transfer boats from shore to bigger boats and they load them with 10 or more people + luggage.

I think I'd sheath the outside with fiberglass & epoxy because its tough and not easy to puncture...what do you think?
Do what ever you like. It makes it more tough as you say but also more expensive. Plus it's a lot more work. If I had to do it again, I would cover the floor with fiber & epoxy.
Great job! When do you remove the cable ties along the edges of the panels?
Same answer as below:
You glue the inside of the boat first and the cable ties stay in place. They should be covered by the epoxy.
When it comes to the outside, the inside part should be dry and hard and the boat sticks together.
You may then cut the remainings of the cable ties at the outside or grind them away when you round the edges before you attach the fiber and epoxy.
Attaching the epoxy and fiber should be done in one workflow. Inside first and outside the next day or later.
Freakin Sweet! Good job. Thanks.
this video was uploaded in 2015, now that we are in 2018, is the same boat still doing the job, did you make any upgrades? what about maintaining it? thanks in advance , great video
The boat was build in 2010 and I just sold it in January 2018. Still in good condition but it had spent the las few years in a garage. A Dive Center bought it and they put special rubber mat inside as an upgrade. You may have a look on the pictures in my blog:
www.leben-auf-bohol.com/boot-verkauft.html It's in German however, you can still see the pics.
thank you so much sir, but may i ask, what does the rubber mat add to the boat? less stresses on the bottom? water proofing? i don't really get it
It protects the bottom and the walls from bumbs of the diving tanks and other hard equipment. And it looks good, very good. It also protects the bottom from water. Unfortunately, I can't add a pic here.
Just amazing. You can make more and sell them, that boat looks AWESOME

Wie kommt ihr zu den Maaßen von den Frames, oder ist das egal wie breit sie sind ?

Easy to build. But pretty big. There are plans of smaller boats available.
Would you say it could be carried by two people? Thanks!
No, you need 4 people to carry it. Weight is aprox. 160 Kg with all the additional wood.

That's an awesome boat you built there, what kind of epoxy did you use, and approximately how much did u use?
Used it for 3 years (seasons). Any Epoxy suitable for boat building. Not the one that it is used on a car. There is no brand name on it in the Philippines where the boat was built.
Part 2 would include now building a trailer to trolly it to the water 👌

No layer at all! Only a 12cm wide stripe along the joining edges. You can see that in detail here: boatbuilder.gewibu.com/building-boat-from-plywood.html
When almost done, you'll have to paint the boat with 2-3 layers of epoxy resin to make the plywood waterproof. That's it. No fiber mat.
hey, living in thialand- nice job, looks great ! 8 hp should give you what about 12-15 knots?

What happen with the cable ties ones you start with the epoxy. You just cover them with the epoxy ? But that will make bumps .

When it comes to the outside, the inside part should be dry and hard and the boat sticks together.
You may then cut the remainings of the cable ties at the outside or gind them away when you round the edges before you attach the fiber and epoxy.

yaay Hannu! the only "problem" are most his designs being for human rowing, having too much rocker for really planing out with an engine. not saying his site isn't THE BEST place to start learning and building from, someone reading everything he offers up a couple times will know what they're doing and succeed! the "rocker issue" can be solved fairly easily using 2x2 cut corner to corner then finish angled as temporary (or permanent) inside chine logs from transom to 1/2 or 5/8 of a hull's length, making the bottom very flat at the rear instead of full length slow curve, can only be done when building of course. option for existing? a couple packs of door/window shims lined up glued to bottom at transom full width. they're about 8" long 1.5" wide and run 0 to 5/16" thickness, may be enough to help the bow from wanting to roll upwards when more power is applied. it's a cheap-easy (cheezy?) but may be worth a try if roll up is an issue. may also give a better-lower location for addition of trim tabs if a little more is desired.
Amazing work on the boat! I am genuinely considering building a similar style dinghy with some friends of mine and have been searching for the plans that you said you found online for a few hours. Do you happen to still know where you obtained your plans?
