Kevin almost always gets overworked, so he gets a break in this one. Also, he gets to laugh on the inside watching his band mates strain to get the body percussion right.😅

Kristen’s definitely stepping up- both Mitch and Scott were sick and not all their best. I just watched their concert livestream of this and they sat in circle facing outwards so Matt and Kevin were next to each other. The sound was much better, too.

I'm not sure about the pre-recorded track but you are so right that acapella requires a different mixing than instrumental groups. There have been a few show appearances where PTX hasn't come through as well as they should have.

Oh it's 100% pre-recorded track. There is no way to get such a consistent and good sound without loads of mics when they clap on the knee, then the chest, then in the air, then snap on the other side etc. On different fabrics. It's probably impossible to mic it well enough for a tv or arena performance. Having it on a track makes total sense. They are still hitting all the marks and movements.

Not only different fabrics, but Kirstie's outfit means she's slapping bare skin - no way it's not pre-recorded!

    Yes the claps are prerecorded.
So true about the bass line and mixing. Avi had the same problem with performances like this as well. I just watched their live stream of their current concert tour where they performed this number. The mixing was better and Matt was resonant! Actually he was amazing the whole concert.

sometimes Kevin has a looping pedal for certain live stuff, especially when it's super layered or body percussion, sometimes they use a track, but the vocals and beatboxing is always live, and it's still crazy impressive they still have to mix themselves live. Kevin can't slip himself into 10 people. But they also have lots of songs, where everything is live in the recent 3 years they all got a bit more experimental and comfortable including instruments or other sounds, not just their bodies which was pretty brave, because lots of people use the fact they didn't do to brag and as something to boost their own ego, instead of being fans and support them in everything they do.

Yeah i'm sure the body percussion is a background track, it's still pretty impressive that they can do all those moves while singing

And even though they are going along with a background track (which I agree), they still have to sync up the movements! You can tell they are still making the noises even if it would not be loud enough without adding the background

They are using a clap track, but it’s just to concentrate and not worry about trying to mic up the body perc.

I love this one by them. They really did this so well. Live is such a treat with them. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year

You're correct that the clapping part it a back-track, but it only proves how unbelievable they are since the singing (live) and back-tracking have to be in complete sync...that is SO HARD to do...unless your Pentatonix !!!

They 9/10 are using a pre-recorded track from when Avi sung this with them over 10 years ago. Cuz those claps and snaps sound exactly the same. They even did a tutorial on how to do each clapping section after the original video came out.

I don't think the hand part is pre-recorded because sometimes they mess up the pattern and the sound follows the mess up rather than what it's supposed to be. A track would be obvious during those times. I think they, like Kevin many times, have hidden mics or the mics are directed toward their hands since their voices are strong enough to be heard. But a track wouldn't follow the sound when they mess up like it does during live performances.

Nice review. Yes, they always use a clapping track live. There is no way to get the volume they need live. (Kudos to them though, they still need to nail the movements!) I know several members were sick around this time. My guess is that Kevin was very sick here and could not sing. Agree with the sound mixing issues. Not every sound engineer understands what it takes to mix acapella well. Love your analysis videos!

Note that Scott and Mitch both had the flu in this performance, so they didn't sing with as much energy as they usually have. (You can REALLY tell in the same GMA performance of Mary Did You Know.) Kevin DOES sing in this song, just not very much, mostly just oohs - you can see each member's isolated vocals on this video: th-cam.com/video/hFSJoQwnV2g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=y9_4MIMHY66Ivia2 and Kevin's part STARTS at 8:36 (although, he really doesn't start singing at all until almost a full minute into when the song begins.)

You forget that they’re very good at what they do. You owe them an apology.

Not sure why you think that. The only real criticism here is directed at the sound crew doing the mixing, not at Pentatonix for the performance.

  • @atenahalley

yes it's a clap track I think it's cause they have to be concentrated on singing and clapping at the same time so if they mess up the clapping (which has happened lol) also they sing this in concert so I hardly think people on the last rows would hear the clapping without a track.

It's nice to see that someone is responding to the lesser-known songs. Pentatonix already had this song 10 years ago with Avi Kaplan.
