    I really liked the Cerberus and was using it regularly on my hiking and outdoor adventures until last weekend when after some batoning - the knife broke in the middle. After removing the scales - it turned out that this "Full tang" knife is not that full because the portion of the knife where the handle is turns out to be skeletonized and not that strong at all. So basically it is not a full piece of steel with only 2 holes where the handlescales connect but it is a knife with skeletonized tang that turned out to be weak enough to be broken with batoning. Just have this in my mind - I also live in a country where such knives are not sold at all and it was around 1 and a half month wait for it to come and it took me quite some money because of all the international shipping and taxes - sucks to be disappointed in such anticipated knife.

    The reason some say D2 is likely to chip is the carbides, bigger than those in O1, by that with a "risky" angle it might show minor break-outs, still, not a bad steel w. the right angle, and awesome for hunting knives as slicing does not apply lateral forces to the edge.
    Nice review!

    Knife center email from yesterday 30 June 2019 peeked my interest, they had the knife on sale as a closeout for $99.95.
    So I researched to get more info/reviews and found this video.
    Great review Aaron, I will be buying the knife!

    OKC outdid themselves with this one. This blade length around 4.5" - 5" is my preferred for fixed blade knives. I always hear about D2 being a pain in the a$$ to sharpen, not really for me, you just need a HQ diamond hone. Added to my list.

    an excellent knife! Thats what i was looking for all the time: a perfect symbiosis between a bushcraft campknive and a "tactical" combat knife. Perfect. Thanks for showing it and made me finding it. Pricepoint in Germany in USD is around 270.- !!!

    Reminds me of the Winkler Field Knife but less expensive. Like the blade shape to it but agree with the price point thing. Seems to be pretty expensive. I think the handles are bit more ergonomic than the Field Knife with a bit better grip.

    I purchased a Benchmade Arvensis 119 at a local store that was having a 20% off sale, so I got it for $150.00. I believe it would compare well with this knife and it has a sheath that is made from Boltron with a molle compatible clip included. The steel is 154cm and it has a DLC coating. If you are interested in reviewing it I can get it to you as I am in the Denver Metro area.

    Say Heah Aaron, A while ago, O.K.C. made a knife that was Tactical, but also for Bush Craft, It was a 1/4" thick and a 5" Flat Grind blade, But with a Higher RECOMMENDED then they dropped the RC because too many were shipping the edge. I used my hard, but obviously not that hard because I never chopped mine, I use my Hatchet and saw to process my firewood. But yeah, I still use my T.F.I. yeah, its a blocky handle, But with a little file and very lightly, I have the handle fit perfectly for my hand, And all I did was touched up areas on the handle when I grilled the handle hard, that was the areas I lightly filed, Anyhow its all good now. So is the knife, I teamed it with my Gen2 SP-53.,,.

    Looks nearly perfect for the size/price. Ontario, if you're listening: if you come out with a Cerberus with a 6-8" blade (bonus if it's a drop point), I'd buy several :)
    I would like to see the same knife with a 6-8" blade, and maybe with a drop point option. If Ontario would come out with something like the cancelled Dave Cantebury knife (ESEE DC-6) or the Battle Horse Knives Highlander / Scout Platoon with a 6-8" blade and kydex sheath at an affordable price it'd be awesome. The Battle Horse offerings are nearly perfect but almost twice the price I'd want to pay and the sheaths aren't the best. The DC-6 was going to be amazing but was going to come with a leather sheath and won't see the light of day since it was cancelled entirely. A 6-8" Ontario Cerberus, especially in a drop point design, would scratch that affordable choil-less general field/bush/"tactical" work horse blade itch for me. The only other knife I can think of similar to that would be the rumored choil-less ESEE 6 hm that's coming out, but the ESEE hm knives so far are only offered with leather sheaths and all ESEE knives still have that black coating. I much prefer no coating or something like what's on the Cerberus. Maybe I need to get into the knife-making business...

    Looks pretty nice. How about Cerberus vs Brakimo? Is the Cerberus /really/ all that tactical? For flat-out soldier duty I'd probably stick with the Gerber Strongarm... so what does the Cerberus bring over that on the camp knife side?

    • @e.r9111
      @e.r9111 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ruster Kat better steel, better grind for use, full tang, better ergos, longer blade, just some pluses
      take from what you will. cheers!

    • @rusterkat1188
      @rusterkat1188 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aaron really sold me on the Brakimo as a capable large bushcraft/camp knife and I prefer scandi grinds for working wood (probably from long hours carving with Mora knives). He beat on it pretty good and the edge held up well (according to him). Brakimo looks pointy enough to stick something if necessary, too. I have a file so 90deg spine is no problem on a diff hardened TOPS. Seriously thinking this might be a future purchase for me.
      Re. Soldier knife/tactical... the abuse that the Strongarm can take says it all (I have one but have not put it thru 'gauntlet' style 'use' yet). Dig a hole, pry apart a pallet, beat it thru a 55Gal drum lid and still have a dull-but-working edge says it all for me. I think one would need to be more cautious with a D2 FFG blade than a 420HC saber ground blade, and I don't think cautious and soldier/tactical use go well together.
      Don't get me wrong, the Cerberus looks like a really nice blade and I would definitely like to own one were my knife purchasing resources unlimited; I just struggle with the use-case at the price point for me personally. YMMV, of course. Carry on bravely.

    • @SteveSmith-sd5hq
      @SteveSmith-sd5hq 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ruster Kat. The Brakimo is a top-notch blade. This is an older comment, but if you haven't yet, I would definitely recommend getting one.

      Yeah, It goes well with the Bokor Coye Ridgeback, I teamed mine up, I horizontally carry them, I attached the Ridgeback on the bottom, I wish the sheath had a Pancake sheath because the holes cause the Ridgeback to be upside down, But I have just enough chain so I can flip it without any problem, I used a stainless bracelet that was too small for me, I couldn't get it over my fist, and it didn't separate, so I hunged it from that attached to that new type of loc-tec, I layer the bracelet along the bottomm and snapped it shut and bingo it turned out great, Thanx for sharing that Ridgeback, I also sharpened it on my Work Sharp, I nearly can shave with it now. I grew up on 440c. Bokor ghits it on the head Tempering the 440c. All those years of selling it as a premier stainless. Thanx You.

    I'm wanting a knife to put on my belt when I go into the woods without any other tools. I want it at around the 5 inch range. I want to do carving and batonning mainly. would you think the OKC cerberus or the ESEE laser strike would be better?

    What would you recommend to add traction to the handle on this knife? My wife bought this for me as a birthday present based on your review.

      Hockey tape is the cheap option or some sort of stippling. I never had any traction uses on mine. Are you slipping, or are you just concerned?

      gideonstactical A little of both actually. I want to use it as a edc/field knife but I find the grip to be a little disconcerting.

    If the knife were owned by a U.S. soldier then it would not be used to stab "bad guys" but people defending themselves from being invaded.

    What do you think of kizlar supreme knives brotha

    • @wayneorellana2549
      @wayneorellana2549 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have been using Kizlyar blades for a long time and have several of their blades. I find that the eye to detail is much better on the standard Kizlyar blades (semi custom made, expensive for them to produce). Kizlyar Supreme are the mass production models being punched out of a modern factory. I find the supreme range has trouble with simple things like having the same angle on both sides of the edge. Kizlyar make beautiful functional knives that are damn near indestructible but the supreme range has dropped the ball.

    And yet Ontario still keeps selling us nylon 😕 I LOVE my Ontario SK5 and my Spec plus survival bowie but their stupid sheaths are just plain annoying. Don't get me wrong the Sk5 sheath isn't bad for what it is it does the job. That said a simple kidex taco style sheath like Tops uses for the Brakimo and Bob would make it much better out of box.
    This knife is like some freakish moment an Ontario history and design .....Yes we know Ontario you are a major USA military supplier and must produce lowcost sheaths. BUT please don't stop this way of thinking your basic citizens can afford that extra $10-$20 for a cool rig.

    Just let me say i like your videos including this one. But i think you are a little out of touch with what the average guy can afford. I feel my income is pretty representitive of the people i know, and for me if i cant get a knife for between $50-$70 I cant afford it. Not criticizing you just cant agree with you on its affordability.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      cris loucks I rate affordable based off the materials and the average market cost of other items with similar materials. There is a noticeable jump in quality between a $70 knife and a $140 knife. But I understand if that is your budget.
