Why Knife Companies SHOULD Refund Money | #1 Knife Myth Busted

  • Batonning... it's a controversial topic! Many knife companies don't give any warranty for knife failure related to batonning. Maybe this is because they'd never know what kind of crazy piece of wood you just batonned. However, in our opinion a good knife should be able to take 'normal' batonning of knotless wood. Remember la Cantina? They make beauitiful knives... pieces of art but until now they were not full tang. Not anymore! They have produced a big ass yet beautiful chopper with which you can baton until your hearts content! A beautiful opportunity to debunk the knife myth!

      @Hates Spam Indeed! Even with European or American hardwoods, if you use a thin or weak knife it won't survive. I can only imagine what the woods in your neck of thee woods must be like, though. Wow!
      What I'm getting at is that the call from some American bushcrafters to "never" baton with a knife is an oversimplification.

    I cut my hand a few months back - nice and deep 🤣 5 stitches, gallons of blood, loss of feeling for two weeks.....but it was a very sharp knife and now I can't even see the scar.
    I was drilling a tang for corby bolts - putting all my weight on the drill because the damn cobalt knife was super hard - and the drill bit snapped.
    2 days later Kevlar gloves and a pillar drill arrived at home.
    You get to choose your own level of risk - I don't live wrapped in cotton wool but I sure don't want to loose digits through playing with knives like an idiot.
    Thankfully I'm in Europe so fixing my hand cost zero.

      @@gilbertopadilla3611 The dumbest way (but as the surgeon told me, it's always like that). I had the bad habit to let folders open here and there. First sunday of hollydays, very tired, I just wanted to move one because it was bothering me. I was walking with it in my hands, looking in front of me and I felt a sudden pain.
      I guess I touched the edged after a bad move and the pain made me grab it even more, as I didn't see it happen. I watched my finger and saw a white thing along it, into a deep cut. I would learn next day, during emergency surgery, that it was the 10% remaining of my deep flexor tendon : the superficial one was completely severed, and went back into my palm...
      I try to be more responsible with it now.

    The Hultafors GK you can even baton with a steel hammer as shown on the package it comes in. I think in most cases it's not that they are afraid the knife will break but about the liability in case someone hurts him/herself whilst batoning. Like Maarten did (get well soon). Most of all in the USA people can sue companies for really big amounts of money for all kinds of crazy stuff. They can be sued for making the coffee to hot. Microwave manuals tell you it's not for drying your cat in and car manuals tell you not to drink the battery liquid, etc. So they discourage batoning by not making it a warranted way of using the knife in case of a lawsuit. Not because of replacing a knife.

    • @preacherjohn
      @preacherjohn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      About that (in)famous "crazy" "too hot coffee" lawsuit - here is some of the evidence the jury heard during the trial:
      - McDonald’s quality assurance manager testified that McDonald’s coffee, at the temperature at which it was poured into Styrofoam cups, was not fit for consumption because it would burn the mouth and throat.
      - McDonald’s operations manual required the franchisee to hold its coffee at 180 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit.
      Coffee at that temperature, if spilled, *causes third-degree burns in three to seven seconds*. [A third degree burn destroys the entire depth of skin, and often penetrates into the flesh / muscles / tendons underneath]
      - McDonald’s admitted it had known about the risk of serious burns from its scalding hot coffee for more than 10 years. The risk had repeatedly been brought to its attention through numerous other claims and suits.
      - The chairman of the department of mechanical engineering and biomechanical engineering at the University of Texas testified that this risk of harm is unacceptable, as did a widely recognized expert on burns, the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Burn Care and Rehabilitation, the leading scholarly publication in the specialty.
      - An expert witness for the company testified that the number of burns was insignificant compared to the billions of cups of coffee the company served each year.
      - At least one juror later told the Wall Street Journal she thought the company wasn’t taking the injuries seriously.
      - To the corporate restaurant giant those 700 injury cases caused by hot coffee seemed relatively rare compared to the millions of cups of coffee served. But, the juror noted, “there was a person behind every number and I don’t think the corporation was attaching enough importance to that.”
      - McDonald’s admitted at trial that consumers were unaware of the extent of the risk of serious burns from spilled coffee served at McDonald’s then-required temperature.
      - McDonald’s admitted it did not warn customers of the nature and extent of this risk and could offer no explanation as to why it did not.

    As a kid, my dad drove that "never baton with a knife" myth into my head over and over. In hindsight, this is probably because we always carried military surplus KaBars (which DBK has proven aren't particularly durable) and because we rarely ventured far enough away from camp to make carrying an axe a big problem. But once I had proper full-tang knives and choppers like the Skrama, I changed my tune. Sure, when I'm splitting cord wood at home for the wood stove, a splitting maul or large axe is my go-to. But in that situation, I have a solid stump at the proper height and I'm not lugging a 6lb tool around for miles. When I'm in the woods on an overnight hike/camp, I find batoning to be far easier and safer for prepping firewood - provided that I have a full tang knife, gloves, and I pause before every baton swing to be sure all of my favorite body parts are clear of danger. Any full-tang knife worth a darn should cover batoning under warranty.

    That was a good video, not because Martin got sliced( hope you feel better soon) but I do think manufacturers should cover there warranty no matter what. If you press your knife into a propper survival situation and it won't be by choice, I want to know my knife will work no matter what I have to do to survive.

    A lot of makers actually make knives with batoning in mind. Even on knives I wasn't sure about I wrote the makers and got the go ahead.

    Couple of weeks ago i pulled my garberg out of my backpack while hicking and it slipped from my right hand landing tip first on my left hand cutting the skin between my thumb and index finger. Had to get stitches but i didnt hurt at all. The doctor even told me that i was lucky the knive was sharp so it can heal much faster.

    That’s the only way to split wood when my brothers and father and I are back country hiking and camping, even a light hatchet adds more weight than you want to carry. Having a good knife is literally life or death when you’re a hundred miles from help. I didn’t realize splitting wood this way was called “batoning” or “baton”. But interesting video, and thank you!

      I'd recommend practicing with wedges if you're not already familiar, a lot better when you have more than a few small pieces to split. Easier on your essential tools and more efficient for larger pieces. Mors covers some of the basics here.

  • @Shooter11B
    @Shooter11B 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    IF your baton is a metal hammer or bar or something along those lines, then yes, the manufacturer should not warrantee your actions. BUT, if you baton with something softer than the steel, a properly heat treated knife should be able to baton forever with no consequences. OTHER than possible edge damage from knots, depending on the steel. ALSO, I would Not recommend doing such with any stainless steel knives because well, SS sucks and is typically too hard for really heavy duty batoning and even chopping. Obviously there are exceptions to these "rules" but not many.
