  • Fitting a 30 Inch Longer Chainsaw Bar to my Stihl MS 391. The MS 391 has the 20 Inch Bar standard and 3.3 KW of power.
    Will it run the Longer Bar? How will it Cut? Will it be effective? The Stihl Farm Boss MS 391 is a Medium Sized Chainsaw and was perfect for my Previous Property where the trees were all a smaller size. My new property has some much Larger Eucalyptus Long Leaf Peppermint Trees that I am cutting up for Firewood this Winter.
    I Cut some large diameter Rounds of firewood with the Longer 30 Inch Bar with Full Chisel Skip Tooth 3/8 Chain, Split them with my Fiskars X27 and bing the firewood back to my house with the Land Rover Series 2a.
    I find out if you can fit the longer bar to your chainsaw.

    I used to run big bars . Now I’ve gone back to 20 inch . You can cut 50 inch tree with a 20. Bucking is a bit different of course. Less chain ,less cost.less time filling. Easier on the saw . Keep your chain sharp and not to aggressive on the rakers it’ll be ok mate.

      Long bars are unnecessary here where I live as average tree diameter is smaller than 12". With bore cut method 13" bar is enough for 28" trees IF you know how to do it. It's not dick measuring contest, guys

      I understand wanting to use a longer bar so you dont have to reach over top of the tree at an uncomfortable angle or going around to the other side. I run a 28" bar on my 70cc saw,a 20" on my 59cc saw,and keep a ms250 for limbing and smaller trees. The biggest stuff I usually cut is 32" oak and my ms441c handles it with ease and comfort.

    That saw can pull it if you've got a sharp skip chain and don't dog in too hard but I'd seriously watch that oiler, I don't think it will keep up with that much bar deep in the cut. Also you'll want to keep a 7 pin sprocket if you go bigger you'll lose even more torque which you'll need with that longer bar

  • @Jamie-wayne

    I thought the chain brake was on at first but once you got it spinning and I seen and could hear it’s way tight. You want it tight but not too tight. Try only tightening it till the chain touches the bottom of the bar. It is really hard on the crankshaft bar and everything in between. Very good video though. Not many people show and explain going over manufacturers recommendations on bar length.

The other option would be to change the drive sprocket to down gear it. I was thinking I may have to do this but for the timber I want to cut with it I think it’s fine. Skip chains are for ripping NOT cross cutting. I run a pair of 660 magnums milling with 42", 60" and 87" bars the 87 is a dual power head bar using full skip ripping chain. Cross cutting with a ripping chain is dangerous.

    • @ciphercode2298
      @ciphercode2298 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Skip chains are not for milling. You can certainly mill with them,but the only thing that differs from crosscut chains to milling chains is the angles that they are sharpened. Milling chains are sharpened at 10 degrees and crosscut chains around 30 degrees. Skip tooth chains were invented for use on longer bars used in canada and Pacific northwest where tree diameters were to much for most saws pulling full comp chains. They also help with using longer bars on otherwise underpowered saws,but they have only marginal success in hardwood. They perform best in softwoods such as pine or fir. The skiptooth chain can be jumpy in hardwood and will require frequent maintenance.

    • @euanolliffe9808
      @euanolliffe9808 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most skip tooth chains are sharpened to 10 degrees and these are the chains I have been using for many years ripping logs up to 1500mm diameter hardwoods including oak, blackwood, messmate and redgum the full skip ripping chain provides better chip clearance and the chain runs cooler. However I would concede that a 30 degree skip chain could be used for cross cutting but as you mention they can be jumpy in hardwood which is what most of our native timber is. I use a full chisel 30 degree full comp chain on up to a 60" bar with no issues other than the weight!

      Itd be a stretch for 2 reasons. One,its a clamshell design saw and only one bar stud goes into a metal housing. The other bar stud threads into a plastic housing. 2nd is the oiler on these saws may not provide enough oil to keep everything lined like it needs. You can give it a try though.
