I had the pleasure of seeing Belle last night and it was nothing short of incredible! Although it takes place in the 1770's the themes of love, identity and race are so very relevant to today. Dido Belle's story needs to be told and this film does a wonderful job! Congrats Gugu and Amma, this is your year!
I love that Malfoy is in this movie being Malfoy. Ha. But really, I'm excited to see this. As a young black woman, it's always amazing to see black female protagonists onscreen who aren't maids or servants or enslaved not that those stories shouldn't be told but there ARE other stories, this is proof of that.
july95211 Just because she's biracial black women aren't supposed to be able to identify with her onscreen? Even though this narrative is about exploring the racism that people with darker "African" skin experience as well as illustrating the liminal space someone of both cultures/races occupies? Your statement is ridiculous.
I had the good fortune of coming across a gif of this movie on tumblr and instantly searched and watched this movie. It may possibly be my favorite movie. I cannot put into words how impactful this movie is. It pains me these unjust acts of humanity continue to exist today...
Just saw this tonight with my wife...REMARKABLE, with a haunting music score, just fantastic! A true cinematic jewel....beautiful crafted, and made with much love.
This story applies to ALL COUNTRIES with majority and minority race. When my country was still under the Dutch invasion (that was about 100 - 300 years ago), mixed race also had the same (if not more complicated) problem. The natives thought them as the "whites" while the Dutch thought of them as "mud-blood". But now mixed-race in my country gain famous as TV stars/ actresses because they look unique and usually are very pretty/ handsome
All of these comments completely disgust me. Half of them are complaining that's it's the same story over and over ok if Thad how you feel don't watch. I personally think it looks good might even rent it on amazon!
SAW ADVANCE SCREENING 2 DAYS AGO TO A PACKED THEATER. It is really good. Great dialogue, acting;;;you'll be cheering for the characters. Gugu is great as the lead Dido Belle and its based on a true story too.
Just came back from seeing Belle for the second time. I'm interested in going a third time because this movie is flawless: the plot is concise, the acting is great, the score almost made me cry, and the whole movie is just beautiful to look at. It's more than just a period drama with historical references that drive the character's development. Go see it! I'm from Kansas City, Missouri and it's playing in a few theaters in the area.
I don't know how in the world this movie escaped my notice when it was in theaters! I'm sick at having not been able to see it on the big screen! 😥😢😭😭 I now have it on Blu-ray and cannot get enough of watching it! My favorite books are Regency and Victorian historical romances so seeing a woman of color being portrayed in such a setting is wonderful! The fact that the movie is based on a true story makes it all the more magnificent! I love Misan Sagay and Amma Asante! 💕👏 Gugu Mbatha-Raw is exquisite in her role as Dido Belle! 💕
These types of movies always rip my heart out, I can't stand for anyone to be shamed or mistreated through no fault of their own. I have a beautiful black niece that reminds me so much of young Dido.
Incredible movie. Both touching and inspiring; confronting and heart-warming. All of the characters are well played and well-rounded, multi-dimentional, but especially Dido. Made my whole family watch it (from my 15 year old sister to my 60 year old Dad, and all of them were deeply moved by it. If you have ever watched the BBC North and South... this movie is of the same high calibre and in-depth critique of society. So relevant to both the late 1700s and today
This is so cool!! I cannot wait to see it. This is just as good as another story I have been wanting someone to adapt into a movie. Its about Sarah Forbes Bonetta, the African ward of Queen Victoria. It is a true story taken from the journals of the Queen. She was friends with the British royal children. Her daughter was Queen Victoria's goddaughter. Yet this true story is little known. We keep making the same boring movies over and over again, yet history provides us with so many thought provoking and entertaining stories. I wish someone would make a movie about this.
You know what also would be great? If people made movies about medieval europe that is actually historically accurate rather than the whitewashed version. Even MORE perfect movies that take place in Africa, South America, Asia ABOUT POC in the proper manner instead of a bastardized version.
Amazing, God is always at the center of the universe , for us all, of us all. How could it be that an illegitimate, black child happens to be loved and treasured by the white privileged man that gave her life? Even more remarkable, him having the courage to love and support his child in a time when it was no doubt shameful and hard. After which he charges his uncle with her care who just happens to be the Lord Justice at that time. You can't ignore love or hate, especially when it's right before you eyes. How can all this be? The grace of God!
Not sure how this one got past me, never as much seen a trailer, let alone the movie. I have to get this! This is a MUST see must own, movie for me :-)
I love this movie. I brought it on DVD and downloaded it from I Tunes store. I also ordered it from Amazon Video to watch it before I get the DVD. The actress that plays Belle is so beautiful and her love interest John is handsome and kind. His character is so sincere with a beautiful spirit of treating all people equally. His zest for life and his love for Belle is breath taking. If all men could be like him this world would be a great place to live. M
Why does race have to be such a touchy, sensitive topic? People really need to get over being so easily offended because we are all part of the same bloody race! THE HUMAN RACE!!!!
Yes, i totally agree with you but i was merely making a point in a vernacular that others would understand. I am quite well aware of history with regards to oppression of different "races"and the use of the word "race". So please don't troll around for comments where you can take a simple misread statement into meaning something more than it is. You don't know me from a bar of soap and what my intentions where when i made this comment. Thank you for your input however, but a gain, yes i am quite well aware of the english and history lessons you so blatantly pointed out. Best Regards
Kimmy Olay You asked a question, did you not? I take it you were not really interested in anyone responding with an answer. "troll around"? If you had not been reading the comments posted on this video, what could possibly have led you to ask, "Why does race have to be such a touchy, sensitive topic?" Some of what you have written here is almost unintelligible. The rest of your response to me suggests that you are too unintelligent and dishonest to simply accept being corrected, so you have made yourself look bad and wasted my time. Best regards to you, as well. This conversation is over.
Christine Lund It was a rhetorical question. Unfortunately for you, I cannot entertain a conversation with a person who attacks people rather than their 'unintelligent' remarks. I have agreed with you and yet you still insist on furthering this argument. I do not wish to fight with you as i am a peaceful person. I really do wish you all the best but please make an effort when you respond to comments. You come off as standoffish and others may not be as tolerable. Again, best regards.
Kimmy Olay Before we make an assertion, it is important to ask ourselves "Is this really true?" or is this merely what I would like others to believe is true. Many people are not easily deceived. Not every questions can function as a rhetorical device. In general, a rhetorical question has to either (a) have an obvious, indisputable answer or (b) be impossible to answer. The question you posed does not fit into either one of these categories. Perhaps you should take a careful look at your earlier comments and mine. Initially, my comment to you focused completely on the word "race." I never allowed the focus of my comment to shift away from that word. You are never the subject of any of my sentences. Is this not true? However, in your response to my comment, this is what you wrote, in part: "So please don't troll around for comments where you can take a simple misread statement into meaning something more than it is. You don't know me from a bar of soap and what my intentions where when i made this comment." The focus of your comment clearly shifted to me, and I became the subject of several of your closing statements. Is this not true? Some people might certainly interpret those statements by you as coming from "a person who attacks people." Yet, in your very next comment to me you wrote, in part: "I cannot entertain a conversation with a person who attacks people rather than their 'unintelligent' remarks." (I am not sure why anyone would want to attack another person's remarks, or the person, rather than simply challenge the person's remarks, or the person, but maybe you know why.) It appears that your definition of a "peaceful person" is a bit different from everyone else's definition. You seem to perceive an argument even when no argument exists. Well, it is good to know that you "do not wish to fight," but it would be even better if we could believe that. Have a nice life, my friend.
Please stop polluting youtube comment sections with your rubbish. You are not as intelligent as you may think you are and in fact sound quite ridiculous and pathetic. I didn't read your comment nor do i have any need to. I do not need your psychoanalysis on everything that I post as I don't know who you are and frankly don't really care to. This conversation is officially over.
who is this beauty?? no homo..I want to watch the movie..I've taken black lit courses and we read so many slave narratives about tragic mulattas and this seems to fit the theme..I've always wanted to see one of the novels as a movie and this fits perfectly..love my mixed people! simply the best of both worlds.
Sarah Red lol I saw the help and only saw the trailer for 12 years a slave..Lupita is such a beauty too in that movie..I love these movies although they illustrate an unfortunate time of history but they're amazing and usually have such a stunning cast
Am I the only one whose heart skipped a beat when saw the name "Emily Watson" and thought it was Emma Watson?? Well, Tom Felton was on it after all....
I though it was Emma Watson too when I first saw the trailer a while ago, but I looked for her throughout the video and couldn't find her and then I scrolled down and saw that it said Emily not Emma. It was disappointing.
Me and my mom just got from this movie & I absolutely LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel that everyone should take themselves or there children to this movie.
Why isn't this movie in regular theaters? Theaters are in need of original, stirring films that make people talk! This trailer gives me chills, it looks so good.
Such a great moving movie that was such a part of history I'd never heard of before. Took my 18 year old and she really enjoyed it too. Highly recommend!
Excellent movie which entails so many facets of the African American/bi-racial experience; racism, sexism, slavery, politics, education, wealth, poverty. Very interesting. Excellent acting. And a great chat with the director after the movie.
"What is right can never be impossible." This looks really good! I will definitely go see this! It's hard for me to come across shows, movies that have people of color playing the lead. For this to be a period piece at that! -Oh, yes. I'm rooting for this movie!
This movie was amazing and so beautifully done. Beyond a simple costume drama, there is wonderful commentary about the politics and societal norms of the time. Amazing performances by all and very well written and directed.
Looks like this movie is going to win an Oscar on Costumes alone. Looks like it's going to be a great film. I saw this trailer before watching 12 years a Slave.
I had the pleasure of seeing Belle last night and it was nothing short of incredible! Although it takes place in the 1770's the themes of love, identity and race are so very relevant to today. I seriously can't wait for that movie! ! I've been waiting for too long.

Have you seen Scandal?
I'm excited to see this movie, too.
Sarah Pemberton
I have seen Scandal :)
The actress is Clearly a Biracial-caucasian Woman, NOT African.

Isn't she enslaved in the social sense?
I had the good fortune of coming across a gif of this movie on tumblr and instantly searched and watched this movie. It may possibly be my favorite movie. I cannot put into words how impactful this movie is. It pains me these unjust acts of humanity continue to exist today...
It's so amazing how much that little girl actress actually looks exactly like Gugu.
Compliments to the casting director.

The race debate will continue for hundreds of years. Deeply emotional topic. Good luck.

"As though she were created of you and me " favorite line !!!
Beautiful beautiful movie. Best I've seen this year.

I know I'll love this movie.
I would like to see this movie, not only for the history, but also for the costumes! I adore 18th century fashion.
Wow whoever plays Belle is seriously beautiful!
