One note I forgot to mention! If you are using a newer Canon camera, the raw file type .cr3 is not yet supported by darktable. If you have a file of this type, you will need to convert it to a different type of raw file (like .dng) before you import those files into darktable. Hope that helps!
I'm using an older nikon D3 (.nef files). when I open Darkroom 3.8.1-win64 running on win 7, I get an unsupported message. when I clicked the link, and uploaded a sample file, it said the camera was already supported. I also get a "cannot export file". Export is to disk, and JPG 8 bit. JPG 2000 worked, but could not open the file...
Im on the verge of crying tears of joy over this 2 year old video. If you see this, thank you so much. I’ve been working so hard on getting it to actually export correctly.
Thank you for breaking it down. I've waisted a whole day and half trying to find someone in video's I could understand that makes it for the very simple minded.
A very well made video. I run Linux on my computers and file handling is much easer than Windows file explorer but you explained it very well. On Linux systems, dt will find card readers, cameras etc that have been mounted in the file system (i.e. when you plug in the card reader and the system can 'see' it in the Files utility), so then dt will also be able to 'see' it when importing. Thank you, I will recommend your TH-cam channel for dt beginners.
Exporting to the same folder where the RAW File is located can be done by using $(FILE_FOLDER) in the target storage line. using something like "$(FILE_FOLDER)/$(FILE_NAME)_edited" on "example.cr2" will create the file "example_edited.jpg" in the same folder where the raw file is There are a lot more of those variables shown in the tooltip :)
Very helpful and needed video for newcomers. The interface does look puzzling for the first time users. Perhaps you should consider editing your title and consider adding something like "for Beginners". EDIT: Now I found that your later video has been named beautifully. Perfect.
Hi Amber. I am just starting to learn Darktable. Have followed every step of importing photos in the lighttable but failed. When click import followed by folder followed by selecting the folder with the photos and clicking open - nothing happens! No photos imported in lighttable or darkroom. However if I select import followed by image followed by selecting an image then the image appears in darkroom and NOT LIGHTTABLE. This is really weired. Have I been doing something wrong whereby the complete folder fails to import and the single image showns in darkroom instead of lighttable. I look forward to your help and advise. Thank you.
Hmm... that's weird. When you click into the folder and then hit open, it should import them. What type of files are you trying to import? I know there is an issue with CR3 files from canon, those aren't supported by Darktable yet. If the files are CR3, you will need to convert them to DNG files before you import them. When you are clicking on the individual image to import, and it's only showing up in darkroom, I've had that happen before. When I went back to the Lighttable module and looked at the "collect images" section on the left hand side, it was trying to pull up photos by film roll, and I could only see one or two photos that I had imported in that batch. When I changed it to show me all the photos by folder, I could see all of the photos that I had imported in that batch. Maybe check that?
Thanks for introducing people to Darktable! One suggestion...Why don't you mirror your youtube channel to a peertube instance? It will attract people to your youtube channel and make it grow. Open source fans love Darktable, and that kind of public is using peertube.
Thank you for posting this how to video. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get too far. When I click on import I get the options Add to Library or Copy & Import instead of Image or Folder options. It looked like I had an older version of Darktable so I deleted it & thought I imported the latest version. However, while it now says I have version 3.8.0 the interface looks exactly the same & it even kept the few images I somehow stumbled upon importing. I've managed to import a photo that I selected from my iPhoto library but I can't proceed with selecting more. When I go to the folder I selected in iPhoto I only see a few images but not the rest. I tried creating a folder on my desktop but when I selected it I wasn't able to import the folder itself or any images ie nothing happened when I clicked add to library. Please let me know what I'm doing wrong. Thank you!
Dear Amber , I am trying to see your video multiple times on 2 different computers , and each time at 2 minutes/14 the sound is inaudible for the remaining video. I would love to share your explanations.
In the export module there's a spot that says file format, and then a drop down to select what type of file you want to save it as. Click that dropdown and change it back to jpeg and you should be ok. If you need to see it, go to 11:23 in to the video and look on the right hand side of the video in the middle of the black section. It's right above the slider that says quality. Hope that helps.
Q: is there a way to see/share images on different computers without having to import/export them, basically having a personal DR account where these images are saved in case your computer crashes or decide to change computers
There’s not a paid version of darktable but this is an older version, there’s been an update since this video was posted. Make sure you are in the light table module, that’s where you’ll be able to export.
Hello! Do you even know how to share darktable editions ? like in Lightroom you can send a "library with smart previews" and this receiver can still edit in his way and send back to you... Did you get what I mean?
I'm not sure what you mean. I know you can share sidecar files, which are the .xmp files that darktable uses to save all of your image edits. You can send those to another person and they can import it into darktable and have all the edits you have done to a photo. And I know it's also possible to share a whole development module of darktable...so you can install the developer's version of the software, and make actual changes to the program, and you can share those changes with others. I'm not sure if you are talking about one of those two things or something else entirely.
Hey Amber, great video! When I try to export, it doesn't apply any of the edits that I made. It just exports the original photo. That's wierd. The only option I see is to use a style. Which means every photo I edit, I have to create a style? Are you able to export photos with edits and without using any style?
Great video! Would you know why whenever I export my photos they look nothing like what they do in darktable? In edit they will look great but after exporting the colors and exposure will be blown out.
Glad it was helpful :) I would go back into dt and check your history stack on the left hand side of the screen for those photos. This will show all edits made to a photo. Make sure the last thing you see there at the top isn’t something from the exposure module or something. If that all looks ok, check your export settings. Make sure darktable isn’t applying any extra actions to your photo when you export. If that doesn’t work, I would request to join the darktable fb group, because in there you can post your picture after export and post a screenshot of whAt it looked like before you exported it. People can see some more details and are usually quick to help.
I am exporting my photos as JPEGs but my computer is storing them as xmp files so I can't open them other than in Darktable. Not sure what to do, can you help please? Really good videos. Thank you.
The xmp file is the sidecar file that darktable makes for each photo once you start editing. If you are exporting it as a jpeg there should be a third jpeg file for that photo. Double check your export settings and see what folder it’s putting your exported jpegs in...I have trouble all the time with darktable putting them in the last folder I accessed instead of the same folder as my original photo
@@ambermcintirephotography1494 That's fantastically quick and helpful. It had put the JPEGs in a different file from the xmp files. Not sure why but there you go. Many thanks and best wishes.
The xmp file is a file dt makes that holds all of your edits. When you export it as a jpeg there will be a new file. Check to see where darktable is saving the jpeg when you export it, sometimes it saves in a different location.
Thanks for this great video! As for the export folder- I just chose the same folder I imported from from the export menu and there was no problem exporting them in the same one back- even with the xmp files. They automatically get a "_01" attachment to their original file name. But maybe it works differently on Mac and Windows?
Actually it is possible to save the images into the drive using darktable. Despite that I don't recommend it to anyone. The system, some times, just don't work properly (you have to install drivers) and is really basic. I wouldn't recommend to make copy paste to save your images, it is not the safest system ever. Why don't you use ImageBrowser EX from Canon? It's great, organizes automatically the files and has several options.

Thank you very much, just got darktable on my chromebook and was so stuck on how to export a photo.. thanks again
It’s so tricky the first time! Glad it helped!
Thank you for breaking it down to the basics!!! Some of us need it.
You are so welcome!
The best tutorial I have seen today
Thank you for that. I was finding so many videos on more andvanced topics, but I'm just starting out and needed the basics.

Well done Amber, thank you much!
Anytime! Hope it helps.
Great Video, Explained it for the beginner , keep them coming
Thanks John!
The preset tip is amazing! Thank you so much for making this video.
Darktable no longer seems to have the 'image' and 'folder' import options. I'm on v4 and have 'add to library' and 'copy and import'.
This video was very useful! Thank you very much!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot ! Keep going.
Thank you!
Great tutorial
Very useful, thanks , go ahead.
Oh, I forgot to tell you that you got a new subscriber.
I followed you on Instagram too.
