  • My next small step is merely to remove the timing chain/sprocket assembly. The wonderful part about videoing my progress is that I see things on video that I failed to notice while doing the work.

    Keep going Randy, the best way to learn is doing, and you are being very careful not to break anything. The remote help you are getting from some fabulous people is fantastic. If I have to pull my engine apart ( which I hope i don't have to) I'll follow your videos because you aren't glossing over anything.

      Thanks Stewart for the vote of confidence! I know I can't learn everything, but I do hope to learn how and why as I go. I am extremely thankful for my old and new friends who help educate me..

    Jammy bugger, my crank and cam sprockets never come off that easy!! That's why I said a puller is a valuable tool to have.

      I was a tad surprised how easily they pried off... After this one, I will disassembly my 998 and see how well that goes.

    Great work Randy, keep chipping away and it'll be done before you know it. Oil thrower 'throws' oil from the bottom of the timing cover to keep the chain lubricated.

    • @LoneStarMini
      @LoneStarMini  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I understand what the name suggests as you say, but I don't understand how it actually throws oil.. interesting..

    • @frankenhorse2318
      @frankenhorse2318 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LoneStarMini It runs below the level of the chain into the oil pool in the bottom of the cover and the throws it around with centrifugal force into the upper section of the timing case and onto the tensioner. hope that helps :)

      @@frankenhorse2318 Thank you.. I can kind've see it. I would expect to actually 'throw' oil, it would need small wing tips/fins, but I understand it better. Thank you

    4:54 the oil thrower throws the oil away from the timing chain cover oil seal to reduce leaks.

    • @LoneStarMini

      just don't understand how it actually functions..

    That timing chain cover gasket is disappointing. I fitted that as part of the work I did when I was there. I can't remember if I brought it with me or you supplied it 🤔 if I supplied it, it's likely to be a Minisport part, which from what I know now, are not the best quality. I will be tearing my engine down this winter which has a Minispares gasket on it. I'll let you know what it's like. If I've over tightened it, I hold my hand up but I'd be surprised.
    Good work, small steps at a time is the way to go sir 👍

      Hey Now Pete... the gasket came from a gasket kit I had ordered before your arrival. I Honestly don’t remember whether mini sport or spares... well, now I know how oil can begin to leak from the timing cover and I’ll be aware when putting a new gasket on.

    If you watch the video back you will see the timing marks on the sprockets line up on top dead center

    • @LoneStarMini
      @LoneStarMini  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I vaguely remembering my friend telling me about this during his visit. I assume the 'mark' that I mentioned on the camshaft may actually be a timing mark you mentioned. I am SOOO glad I film my progress because I see/notice things that I fail to see while doing the work...

    • @stevecooper9974

      You will see a dot on the camshaft cog which lines up with a mark on the crank cog, these should be aligned on reassembly when on tdc. Keep going you are doing great so far 👍

    5:21 The crankshaft runs at twice camshaft speed. ie if the crank is at 6000rpm the cam is at 3000 rpm

    How much play should there be in the timing chain after re assembly. How much tension should be applied by the tensioner.

    3:45 it looks like that bracket has been ground down on the bottom edge to? Dynamo bracket fitted to an alternator bracket or vice versa?
