Jasper Mortier just did a video (specifically on the SVT sound) touching on this component part influence. I’m a huge Quilter fan, Peter Quilter (the Q in QSC) is such a cool, approachable, knowledgeable chap. He changed the way I view amplification, period.
I have the SuperBlock US.....25 watts, 3 Fender type voices, FX loop....THE perfect pedal platform. Fat, warm clean sound as a base, pedals to taste. Never going back. Wish I had discovered Quilter years ago. This coming from a guy that's been a Boogie man for more than 40 years.
I have this amp...I have had it for a while...I purchased it as a combo with a 1x10....the amp is removable from the combo if I want. The amp had more than the speaker wanted to give. I had tried a lot of speakers because I wanted this little combo to give the sound I needed for gigs...in case I didn't want to lug the amp that day. I wound up putting a Fender 10" Eminence Ceramic speaker from my 4x10 bass cab (I replaced the speaker with a new and the cab is okay)....the higher power speaker gave it a real amp tone and feel. I sat there for hours in my shop at full volume comparing it to my mesa Fillmore and my BE50....I was shocked at how good it sounded.
So at 6:45 or so, are you running the Stomp’s cab into the Quilter into the Blackstar cab, or were you recording direct. Thought it might sound odd running a cab sim into a real speaker cab.
i do both. I run it in the fullQ mode, which is designed to be run with modelers cab sims (according to the manual). I also bypassed the cab sim shortly after that section of the video. I wanted to try both and think the results were both fantastic
@@SteveSterlacci cool. Typically speaker block/sim/ir into a real physical speaker can yield some weird/dark/harsh results. That blackstar cab speaker must be pretty neutral.

I have found that since working with digital stuff (Boss OD-200 and now the HX Stomp XL) and using Quilters (currently I use a Mach 3 with a 2x12) I have much much less variation between what I dial in at home and what I hear on stage. So maybe you’ll be just fine. I was happy to see you demoing this. I found your channel recently as I’m new to the Stomp and modeling in general and I’ve use Quilters for a few years. I’ve learned a bunch from your channel in a pretty short amount of time so thank you.
Loved the demo - but then your tone is always great lol. Got a couple questions on the product that hopefully you could help address: 1. I thought these have been around for a few years now. Am I missing something or is this a newer model/ upgraded/ revised version? 2. How would you compare this against products like the Seymour Duncan Powerstage or Orange Pedal Baby... or dare I say even the old Crate Powerblocks (or any solid state poweramp for that matter)? I have the Quilter Mach 3 combo and it is awesome too. Same 200 watts with 6 voicings and a 12" speaker. The whole thing weighs about 21lbs. With a modeler you can do 4 cable method or go into the return. All by itself, you can switch between 2 voices and it has tremolo and reverb. :)
Yep, I use an HX Stomp and pedals into the power section of a Quilter (effects return) and then into a 1x12 Creamback cab (no cab block in the HX). Sounds fantastic (ignoring the fact that Quilters sound great on their own). Output of modeler into effects return of Quilter bypasses the Quilter’s tone shaping preamp and just gives you clean power amp, so your tone is 100% modeler and real speaker cab.
Correct - just the amp block, no cab block. I’ve A/B’d that setup against my tube heads through the same real 1x12 cab, and I can’t get my tube amps to sound any better than the modeler.
Btw, the Quilter I use is a U.S. Superblock, which is only $299 and the same footprint as the HX Stomp. And it’s loud as hell - similar volume to a Fender Deluxe Reverb.
I love my Quilters. 2 Microblock 45's, a 101 Mini Head and an Interblock 45. My tour rig for the last 3 years is my Interblock 45 thru my Frontliner 2X8. I use a Freidman Dirty Shirley pedal for overdrive tones and I recently added a Nu-x Atlantic reverb/delay pedal for abient effects. It is the perfect rig for me because of its portability and versatility.
I actually use a micropro II l. I got into quilter a couple years ago as a good all around live sound alternative that’s quality for me/light weight and easy for the sound guy to work with. Takes pedals well and I even run my headrush mx5 into it. Getting the quilter foot switch opens a lot more with their amps.
Nice. I've got the Quilter Aviator Cub (US) and my HX sounds great either in front or in the return of the effects loop. And, it sounds great alone - I use an ABY to plug into two inputs/pre amps (usually Tweed and BF).
Do you mean hx effect or helix. I been thing of getting the cub to run my podgo into but not sure how well it will work. Is the cub loud enough to gig with 50 watts. I could also just put pedals in front of it and skip the pod go if the cub amp sounds good.
Im loving my 202 and use it with my hx stomp. Did you try running your full modeler amp/cab into the quilter FRFR input setting? I watched the video and believe you only mentioned the full q and vintage input mode? I spent some time comparing my hx stomp as a pedalboard into the vintage vs. using helix's twin double amp/cab into quilters frfr input. Both sounded good but using the vintage setting(quilters amp mode) felt more dynamic and had a better feel. It kinda sounded flat using the hx stomp's amp modeler into the quilter frfr input maby due to the guitar speaker(celestion 250 neo). Cool to have that option though.
Hey Scott! The FRFR i believe is designed to go to an unpowered FRFR cab. So i chose to not use that with the real cab. Your results are what I would have expected. I loved the 2 settings used. Even just playing the vintage tone stack straight in was so good
A lot of (dare I say niche?) metal bands use Quilters for their backline, either for modelers or preamp pedals. Cave-In, Mutoid Man, and Converge all use Helox through Quilter live and Deafheaven uses Peavy 5150 preamp pedals through the Quilters. I played a combo one and it was stunning.
Someone left a comment saying "this doesn't sound very good" The lie detector test determined: That was a lie. Sounds great man! Great video, as always.
I've been using Quilter's for going on ten years. I had heard great things about them and then my friend became a Quilter dealer. He called me when they first came in and I went down to his shop and they totally blew me away. I A/B them against a Silverface Fender Super Reverb, a Japanese Marshall SLP100 clone and a real vintage Vox custom made AC30TB. The Quilters kicked the shit out of all of them. I sold all my tube amps (a lot of them were boutique) and never looked back. I have four of them now and am extremely happy. For those that don't know, Pat Quilter is the Q in QSC and started out in the late 60's building tube amps. He's the only one that actually made a solid state amp that sounds as good or better than tubes.They take modelers and pedals really well, something that a lot of tube amps don't do. I highly recommend them and no, I don't work for or am an endorsee for Quilter, just a (retired) working musician much like a lot of you.
Does sound good and like it works well, Quilter is abit of a mystery brand in the UK - you hardly ever see them anywhere and not many even talk about them as an option
Another question/request. Have you tried for kicks or out of curiosity to run the Stomp into the Vintage voicing vs the FullQ? Wonder what differences you hear with all EQ knobs at noon.
I have had a Quilter 101 Mini Reverb for a few years which is pretty good as well. Linked with my HX Stomp XL (in 4 cable method) is absolutely great. I'm getting a nice Fender-style clean if I want, and can add in any kind of other amp I want. The 101 is lacking a little bit in power, but it'll do fine for home use. For the HX Stomp, I'll use either preamp or amp models based on what my ears like (but 100% no cab blocks) and then go to the FX Return of the Quilter and into a 2x12 with V30s at home.
I use a Problock 200 with my Helix both as an amp and bypassing the pb200 preamp to use a helix amp-model while the Quilter acts as a power amp, thus giving me a 2 channel amp rig while only having one in the helix preset. Problock is fullQ voice only. Sounds great & has more than enough power to destroy a guitar cabinet. These things are beasts. I'm love using it in our heavy shoegaze/doommetal band.
Another great video Steve! How do you think this compares to a Seymour Duncan Powerstage to amplify a modeller? I’m trying to find a solution to amplify both guitar and bass (at separate times) so that I just bring an appropriate cab, power amp and a small HX Stomp XL based pedalboard to a rehearsal or gig as I’ve never loved frfr and need to move some air for smaller venues.
Great review. I have had one for a couple years. Works great with my Fractal FM9. Powerful creamy clean headroom. I have mine in a Quilter 12" BlockDockHD. Very light, very powerful, yet can sound great at low bedroom volumes.
One thing to note, im not sure if its like this with the tone block, but if you use it as a power amp only for a floor modeler into a cab, you plug into the return from the floor unit, buyt they dont mention that if you need full power from this thing, you need to dummy plug the FX Send to get the full 200W. Remember the old Crate Tone Blocks. There selling used for 170 to 250 bucks. I had a budy get one back in the day new for 99.00. Used it as a back up head on gigs.
I have the discontinued ToneBlock 200. I run a ISP Theta preamp into the Quilter for Metal. This amp is insane! I can run anything from a 1x12 to 2 4x12 cabinets. The quilter is only 4 lbs. I would take this set up over tubes any day...For metal anyway.
Oh man I need more details on this. Trying to get a metal tone out of mine, anything from thrash to extreme death metal. That ISP good for that? And I see numerous thetas online which one do you recommend?
@@jasonjkruger I have the 3 button Theta. I just bought a 2nd one used for like $200. I do not use much FX. Not my thing. I just use the gain channel 1 on the Theta with an always on Tone City Sweet Cream as a boost in front of the Theta. Into the Quilter Tone Block 200. Head ripping tone with this setup. FYI...The Theta has the best gate I have ever used, and I have had like 6 other ones in the past.
Quilter is mind blowing at first.... I had the toneblock 202, the aviator cub and the superblock. They're loud I'll give them that. Over time i found more things to hate about them. The eq doesnt function the way you need them to in gigging environents, it always feels like a compressor is running, the reverb is not ideal. If they fix the eq and ditch the limiter I think they could be a lot better, the cab sim is not very good at all. Another thing to be aware of is the resale value is horrible. You have to advertise 1/4 of the price just to get bites. If you're using a modeller, i recommend the seymor duncan power stage over this, or the blackstar amped1 which i really love and think you get more bang for your buck. One more thing about the quilters, if you have to use them at a low volume in a gigging situation, the tone is terrible, and since the eq sucks, you cant adjust it out. The best quilter ive heard is the steelaire, even though its made for steel, it works well for guitar. I play in a band with a second guitarist who uses one, and my dr Z blows it away though.

I've used Quilter amps for a long time now. When I was sent the original Tone Block 200, it instantly was my number one amp for my non-stop gigging! My Superblock UK is my go to amp for everything right now. It's a perfect pedal platform amp and also sounds killer on its own. Welcome to the Quilter world brotha man!
Got rid of the PS170 it felt very underpowered, ran PS700 and the ToneBlock 202 side by side for a few months and ended up selling the PS700. The fan on the PowerStage was annoying and the ToneBlock sounded and reacted more lifelike.

I like my tube amps during the winter when they double as space heaters, but in the hotter months I switch to Quilter Superblocks.

Been using this amp a few years now, very happy with it. Tried the Quilter Super Block US and 101 Reverb as well. Like this best of all.

the mid range sounds a bit hollow or something. Definitely turn off the IR if you use a cabinet or it'll sound like a bag of poop

Deafheaven have switched over to Helix into Quilters now, so it seems to be a winning combination.

I had the 101 Reverb - really liked it - and that one came out so I sold it to get that. I didn't like the 202 near as good as my 101 for some reason.

Hi Steve I use the Tonex for this purpose in front of my AXE III same thing maybe better as far as tonal changes and a lot cheaper :)
The Tone Block sounds excellent. Wonder if the Seymour Duncan Power Stage is comparable, except I don’t believe the latter has built in reverb.

Stunning. What does vintage off do?
It turns off the amp tone stack and makes it tailored for a modeler going into a guitar speaker

My cousin uses this with four pedals and a Marshall cab. Best live Strat tone I’ve heard in person on a stage.
When I had my hx500, I used it with a Crate PowerBlock. I like what you get out of those

Resale values are quite robust on Quilter. I’ve sold a few as I’ve upgraded and never had an issue finding buyers or getting a fair price.

@SJMKS.0 its a tough subject. Youve really gotta try and choose what works best for you. Amp in room you should try a real speaker and power amp IMO.
I've used Quilter amps for a long time now. When I was sent the original Tone Block 200, it instantly was my number one amp for my non-stop gigging!
My Superblock UK is my go to amp for everything right now. It's a perfect pedal platform amp and also sounds killer on its own.

Got rid of the PS170 it felt very underpowered, ran PS700 and the ToneBlock 202 side by side for a few months and ended up selling the PS700. The fan on the PowerStage was annoying and the ToneBlock sounded and reacted more lifelike.

Just the first few chords at 4:26 were MASSIVE. I'm absolutely sold.

A little more time working with his cab mic position and EQ on the mixer I think would have helped.

At first I used it with the cab, then I turn off the cab. I explained it in between noodles at some point where I change over 😅
