When my friend died in a car accident our junior year of high school, this was his FAVORITE song. A couple guys from our class played and sang it in church at the funeral. He was buried with the album🙏I still think of him to this day whenever I hear this song.
This is amazing. It's rare that we can get a chance to enter Mr. Water's mind, and for him to open up about about his father and the Vet who held his hand so tight as he gave praise to his father was so unexpected.....and so cool.
I am not a Pink Floyd fan at all and I had heard this song for many years now being in my 50ts but when I heard the backstory of this song my tune changed to at least this song for I myself have someone in my life who deals with schizophrenia but these days there is a better medication for them or at least for my son he does better on this medication but there was a time that I could totally relate to the song now that I know from where it comes from ❤
David Gilmour wrote the music to the title song to WYWH, Roger only wrote the lyrics. David was playing the music in Studio 3 at Abbey Road and was originally called Squire of Royden and was something David wrote at his home in Royden, Essex, England in 1975 and one day during the WYWH sessions, Roger heard the piece and said "What's that" and he went off to write the lyrics and David worked out the rest of the music (watched on Pink Floyd Legends on VH1 in 2002 aka the US version of The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story which on the US version got more into the band's history). Dan Rather also asked about Roger's fallout with David Gilmour which occured in 2014 when David refused to join the BDS Israel boycott when The Rolling Stones played Tel Aviv but never aired. Then Roger went back to trashing David and Rick Wright (may he lay in peace).
Why in the world would you come in here and deliberately lie like this? People that actually know Pink Floyd know that Roger wrote most of the general music for most of their hits. People like you act like Roger knows nothing about music, that he only wrote lyrics. There is a reason why so many of their hits have only Roger as the writer. Roger and David working together on music created some of their best stuff, combining their talents. Gilmour has always said he wasn't a prolific songwriter. He was comparing himself to Roger who was the only prolific songwriter in the band. Gilmour is famous for having little bits of music and looking for something to do with it. Roger could often take them and complete an entire song relatively quickly. Even when Roger was writing lyrics, it is often left out that he was also writing the melody which is a part of the music. Melodies are incredibly important in making a song well-liked and Waters was a master at it. His melodies could be popular, but were never boring. The thing that makes Wish You Were Here is the melody. It is tremendous. The chords that go along with it are not a big deal. It's a basic set of chords that is guaranteed to sound pretty good and has been used over and over again. It is the singing melody that makes it original and the classic that it is. Playing a C with a G and an A minor is what everybody does.
@@stickman1742 Roger must be the most disliked musical genius ever, I don't understand this love for Gilmour to the extent of trying to bring down Roger because he's outspoken, Gilmour played some nice solos, came up with some nice riffs and has a great voice, that's what band members do.
I am not interested in the hostility between them, but I know for sure that Roger Waters is the brain behind PF's music. And he wrote most of the music- not only the lyrics for especially The Wall and, more importantly, Animals which is a masterpiece. David, of course, is a phenomenal guitarist- just Comfortably Numb could be enough to say this, and of course is a good singer. But as far as ı am concerned, that's all there is to Dave. No comparison with Roger Waters.
@@handebarlas6248Roger is not a decent human being. Ever since 1976 he slowly but surely got greedier and more power hungry. Roger beginning with Animals started to think “I’m the writer of this band and I don’t want anyone else to write”. He bullied Rick out of the band which took four years to accomplish that. David even said that he wrote the music and Roger got inspired and went to write the lyrics while David went and wrote more music. That was how things between Atom Heart Mother and Wish You Were Here were created. There is no I in a band. It’s a we and a team.
@@TJR-ClassicRockCorner0124 thanks for that view. I suspect that David Gilmour is not a decent human being either? I've been wasting time trying to figure out who may be the better human being of the two. I was at a tie, maybe now , David is slightly better human being? :)

That’s awesome.
Dan Rather is such a genuine and curious interviewer. He brought Roger’s vulnerability out. Thank you Roger for your incredible body of music. 💯✌️
Who knew Dan Rather would turn out to be Cameron Crowe?

Waters songwriting with Gilmour’s collaboration is untouchable.
Roger is still fighting for the rights of the underdog unlike most rock stars.
Great interview, FANTASTIC SONG!!
First song I learnt on guitar. Special one.

It is strange how you can not like a band or singer but love one of their songs eh.
@@andrewholmes5413 well if you're going to put words in my mouth I'm not going to get any pudding
Still looks amazing.
Waters lives up to the purpose of artists-not about narcissism but creating equity.

Roger can't stop, the world is at war. Dear Roger, as a fan please... if this mystical journey must end, end it with a tour of The Wall...
That album is too dark to go out on.
Its not at war its being done deliberately.
I would like to know when he turns back to Rio for another amazing performance
If his father hadn’t died he wouldn’t have had the emotional pain that stemmed most of his best work..
Hello
Wish someone was here. It's been nuts lately keeping up with everything worrying about everyone.
Whose idea was it to get Dan Rather to interview musicians? My 11 year old knows more.
Wish you weren't here came next. That was the end of a good thing.
I wonder which side these two are on politically.😂😂😂😂😂Birds of a feather.
He succumbed to LSD. Like many other at that time. Don’t do drugs kids. You might be next.
Were you typing this on a LSD trip?
@@rubicon-oh9km Guess you don’t know Syd’s story. Move on prick.
Stupid interviewer. Waters just told him what the song is about. Rather asks him 'Isn't it also about your dead father?' And Rogers takes the bait.
Roger wrote this song. It’s about Adolf Hitler.
That’s disgusting and a lie, troll.
no
What a joke!!! But not funny at all. Cause it is a sad and tragic event. Not about your hitler. Show respect, teen.
