  • What was the Wendish Crusade of 1147? Why did it break out, and why was it considered a failure?
The Wendish crusade is important in the history of the northern crusades and crusades history in general. Several countries took part in the crusade, including Denmark, Saxony, and Poland, and the crusade saw offensives on several different fronts.
But why was it considered a failure?

The wars between the Wends and nearby Christian states were fought for centuries, and the Wendish Crusade was merely the culmination of those conflicts. Incidentally, the majority of tribal Wendish confederations would've had no issue with being vassals of the Holy Roman Empire if it weren't for the aggressive efforts of Germanization and Christianization of some of its dynasties, which then caused the Great Slav rising which reverted all of the previously successful efforts of Christianization and Germanization of Pagan Slavs for the next 200 or so years.
The history of the Wends is primarily written in Polish and German, not Danish and English, so the void of adequate sources is not surprising.

    Witajcže K’nam!
    I enjoyed your take.
I am a descendant of the Wends of Texas. I would like to know more about what books and sources you've read to compile this.
Our library has many books on the culture and history, but I am trying to fine hone-in on this specific timeline to grasp what all went down.
Keep up the good work, liked and subscribed!

Learn about the Finnish Crusades at th-cam.com/video/JZnEompv3KQ/w-d-xo.html&t
Correction 1: Mieszko III was the grand duke of Poland and not the king of Poland.
Correction 2: Pommerania had officially become Christian in the 1120ies even though a large part of its population was still pagan. The crusade of 1147 was only carried out against the Oborite confederacy.

In all three episodes about the Northern Crusades, the fact of the movement of the Euro-aggression of the Northern Crusades against Orthodox Russia is silent, although everyone has heard about the Ice Battle of 1242, but no one knows that the Ice Massacre was only a small episode of two centuries of the Euro-aggression of the Northern Crusades against Orthodox Russia along the entire western border of Russia, starting from the Carpathians and up to the Finnish The bay...

The Medieval Northern and Baltic Crusades are perhaps some of my most favorite episodes of Middle Ages history! Largely because they are so neglected in Crusading history, also, many people I know who are somewhat familiar with the Middle Ages think that paganism died out by the end of the Early Middle Ages (circa 500-1000 A.D.). But not in the Baltic region, paganism lasted through the High Middle Ages and even until the late 14th century A.D. (Lithuania was the last nation in all of Europe to mass convert to Christianity - having only done so in 1387 A.D.!).

Those Wends were quite ingenious. They sacrificed so much to keep their pagan ways and then prevailed in face of very uneven odds.

Is that map correct? I thought Wagria didn't quite stretch to the west coast region of Jutland/the Cimbric peninsula.

How can you talk about Wends and not mention that they called themselves SERBS.
I mean before 11th century ALL SLAVIC PEOPLE called themselves SERBS/SARBATI/SARMATI/SARBI/SARDI/SORBI/SORABI/SERBOI/SRBI/...
In 8th century The FRANKS & Vatican named the LINE between west & east europe as LIMES SORABICUS / SERBIAN LINE which began from STAR GRAD/OLDSBURG in Baltic Sea/Sarmatian Sea/Blatno more (Mud Sea) all the way to TRST/TRIESTE in Adriatic Sea.
So by Franks and Vatican all people that lived east from SERBIAN LINE/LIMES SORABICUS were SERBS.
So how can someone be throwing terms like Wends, Slavs around and not ONCE MENTION THE NAME THAT THEY USED FOR THEMSELFS - SERBS.

Nowadays Sorbs (mostly found in Germany and Poland) and Serbs are different slavic ethnic groups, but maybe they used to be the same?

    • @ninobelov4153
      @ninobelov4153 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Kaefer1973 No the names SERBS/SORBI/SRBI/SIRBI/SURBI/SARBI/SARDI/SERBATI/SARBATI/SARMATI/SUEBI/SUEVI/SARABITI/SERBOI/SERBUD/SERVIERS/SERBERE/SERBLER/SIRPLAR/SERBOWIE/SERUBIA/SAKALIBA-SAQALIBA/... ARE ALL SYNONIMS OF SERBIAN NAME. They are the same people even if their main haplogroup today is "celtic" R1b (which was created from mixing Slavic R1a & Dinaric I2 with MONGOLOID R1B haplogroup) they still have slavic morphology. And ALL west europeans with R1b haplogroup are a mix of White Slavic Race with Yellow Mongoloid raceof R1b haplogroup.
PLUS by western & catholic sources ALL SLAVIC PEOPLE BEFORE 5TH CENTURY B.C. WERE CALLING THEMSELVES SERBS, which was a name describing the WHOLE WHITE SLAVIC RACE.

@@Kaefer1973 Here are just a few WESTERN & CATHOLIC Sources about Serbs/SORBI:
LAONICUS CHALKOKONDYLES: "Tribals-SERBS are the oldest nation and the biggest nation in the whole world, i know that with absolute certanty."
ABRAHAM FRENZEL:"Serbian language is spoken from Adriatic to Black sea and from Aegean to Baltic sea and from Baltic to Vladivostok. That is why Vatican & Franks named the line between west and east europe as SERBIAN LINE (Limes Sorabicus) which begun in Star Grad/Oldsberg and ended behind Vennice or in Trst/Trieste."
ROBER SIPRIJAN: "From the begining all Slavs were calling themselves SERBS or Wendi. The name SERB was describing the whole slavic race."
PAVEL ŠAFARIK: "SERBS the first, unique, prehistoric common name of all Slavs. Name SERB is deeply rooted among all slavic peoples and it as a first joint name of all Slavs could only be formed in their prehistoric homeland.
SERBS lived in Europe and big parts of asia from earliest history or from prehistoric times and such a widespread nation leads it's origin from most distant history. Never before 6th century the name Čeh, Czech, Leh or Slav was mentioned and about Russians and Poles the history starts talking in 9th century."
HORMAYERS ARCHIV page 282-283-German chronic from 750a.c.: "SERBS represent such a big empire (regnum), that from them all Slavic nations originated."
"BENJAMIN KALLAY: "After asking the world best and smartest scholars and historians they told me that all slavic nations in antique and prehistoric times were calling themselves SERBS, and terms Slavs and Anti were just small parts of that family. From 6th century foreward the name Slavs appears, up to them all slavs lived together and called themselves SORBS, which means relatives, brothers and united."
KARL VON CERNIG: "First general name of all slavs was SREBLI (SERBI), which means united."
ALEXANDER VELTMAN: "In ancient and pre-ancient times, the name SRBIN (SERBIN) was a common, joint name of all slavs."
FRANJO RAČKI: "In the begining all slavs used a name SERBS (brothers, relatives) but Germans called them Wendi, but Romans & Hellens called them SARBATI or SARMATI. All that confirms that SERBS are the oldest Slavic nation and that the name SRBIN was thousands of years older than the name SLAVS which first appears in 491a.c."
PLINI & MARETIC: "Plini writes that SERBS lived around river Don and Wendi around river Visla but they were both calling themselves SERBS, as in first century a.c. Romans were calling Serbs with their tribal names as Illyrians, Dachans, Trachans, Tribali, Wendi/Vendi, Vandali, Anti, Alani,..."
JOSIF DOBROVSKI: "The unified joint name for both parts of slavic nation (Wendi & Anti), under which all slavic nations can be declared, that would be the name SERBS."
LORENC SUROVJECKI: "The name SERB as general name for all slavic tribes of Vindian origin and the name SERBS is much older than the name Slavs."
FRANCISCO MARIA APENDINI: "Toward Hirkasian sea (Caspian sea) the Circcassi people live, the most war-accustomed nation that for a long time ruled over Egipt and Syria, and they call themselves SERBS."
NIKOLAS FRÉRET: "Serbian language is a mother language of Trachan and Greek language."
VIBIUS SEKVESTER: "All Slavs and Polabian Slavs are calling themselves SERBETII (Serbs).
POPE JOHN 10: "Illyrians, Dachans and Trachans are Serbian tribes."
POPE SILVESTER 2: "The SARMATIANS(Serbs) speak Wendian language."
      And so on and on...
