Nedry was actually more reasonable in the books. He wasn't just a greedy dick (well, he kinda was) but rather InGen kept demanding additional work that wasn't in his contract, and John Hammond attempted to blackball him by contacting his other clients and forcing him to continue work that wasn't agreed upon, for the original salary. This created enough resentment that BioSyn was able to convince him to betray InGen, which may never have happened if John had treated Nedry fairly and truly spared no expense where it mattered, rather than spending all his money on Chillean Sea Bass.
In the films they just never directly stated what was happening and expected you to infer what was going on. My dad ran his own business his whole life, so even seeing this movie the first time as a child, I already understood Dennis' issue. He had bid on a job at a price point based upon incomplete information. Without forewarning, his employer, Hammond had increased the workload without increasing the pay.
I actually like the orginal book version more as it actually adds a bit more depth to Nedry than him just being greedy. In the book he actually was the designer of the entire IT-environment of the Park, however InGen only ever had told him what they expected the systems to do and not what they actually needed them for. This resulted in a stupidly long list of bugs and on top of that InGen started to modify their request even though he was actually already struggeling with the schedule and refused to pay any bonus even though those new modifications required a lot of work. They eventually even went as far as blackmailing Nedry to do his work by threatening him with expensive lawsuits and also ruining his reputation with other costumers, forcing him to withdraw his demands for being payed additionally for the additional work. It is very understandable that Nedry wasn't too fond about the entire enterprise. Eventually Nedry was approached by Lewis Dogson from the Biosyn corporation, a competition enterprise to InGen that arguably is even more unethical than InGen which is already an achievement in its own right. He offered him a considerable amount of money for the embryos, even more if they were actually viable. Nedry didn't intend to tear apart the entire park, it was only supposed to be a few minutes in which he would steal the embryos and deliver them to a biosyn boat until he then would head back and bring the security online again. However, because of the storm and because he didn't know the layout of the park too well he ended up in the Dilophosaur exhibit...
John Hammond's catch phrase: "We've spared no expense!" Except re-negotiating Nedry's salary/bonus money so he wouldn't destroy the park and betray everyone else.
Zenklusen Matias in the novel he is far more sympathetic. Hammond deliberately obfuscates the scale of the problem to him to lower costs, rejects the renegotiations for new pay following more then double the assigned work hours, force him to drop a lawsuit regarding overwork by stating it violates his gag order on the contract, and Hammond threatens to use his corporate clout to make sure Nedry is never hired again if he doesn’t shut up and code.
Wow the 90s aesthetic of that comic is so nostalgic. I love how everything is so overdesigned and futuristic (i mean just look at the chairs, lol), brings me way back.

I always loved this story in the comics- it shows just how little respect Nedry showed the dinosaurs and how greedy he was- the traits that will cause his doom. And I agree- Nedry's easily the most fun human antagonist in the entire franchise. Wayne Knight's just an endlessly entertaining actor and gives Nedry this amazingly slimy, comedic bastardly quality that no one else can match, hard as the likes of Ludlow and Hoskins try. Another really great video!

Another pretty interesting story. I'd have to say I'm enjoying these background stories a bit more then the last couple issues of return to Jurassic park
I really liked the novel version of Nedry; which was almost a bit sympathetic at times. In the first book, Hammond agreed to pay Nedry a set amount to set up a vast system to handle the DNA scripts of reptile-like creatures. And Nedry was very pleased with the job and his pay... until the JP scientists discovered that dinosaurs were actually far more like modern birds (a vastly more complex DNA structure than reptilian animals) and would require a LOT more work and systems on Nedry's part to support the park. Which he was conveniently contractually obligated to provide either way, while not seeing a single extra cent for all the overtime. While I find this Nedry a more interesting version than just the basically 'money-grubbing villain', I can see why the whole issue wasn't mentioned in the first film. After all, you can't have a 'semi-good' Nedry without making Hammond somewhat of a bad guy. And while in the book he was a fairly selfish and shrewd character, I really found the screen version of Hammond far more likeable and audience-appealing. So I get why they made things more 'black-and-white' with a more innocent, grandfatherly ringmaster and a totally despicable, just plain greedy villain. But I do highly recommend giving the original novel a chance if you have any interest in understanding the full motivation behind the embryo theft- it goes quite a bit deeper into the circumstances than the movie portrayed.
Even with this greater insight into Nedry’s background, I find I’m still torn between agreeing with him and disagreeing with his motives. In a sense, yes he is correct about the idea of pay (and benefits.) Hammond seems a bit tight-fisted concerning adequate compensation for such an important position. If seeing it all on paper was enough to sign a contract, then why did he bring people out to tour the park in hopes of giving their endorsement on it? Why was the plot of the first movie even a thing? When it comes to paying someone for a job, you take into consideration the work involved, the value of the success of that job, and the personal impact that work will have on someone. The fact that there are dinosaurs involved makes this quite a bit more important than any typical security job. It also means there isn’t a precedence for it to compare salaries. And yes, sometimes you just can’t get an accurate feel for the scope of a dynamic project like that type of programming until you’re on site and seeing the mechanics in person. It is reasonable for Nedry to balk about the pay if the true nature of the work was not accurately conveyed in the paperwork presented to him. Now, I don’t agree with his entitled attitude or his decision to steal and sabotage the park, but I do feel Hammond’s lack of consideration was partly to blame. When you have an important job, you pay people for the success of the project and the value it has TO YOU and your company. You are paying for loyalty and as a show of goodwill. A normal taxi driver and a driver for the president might be doing mostly the same thing, driving someone place to place for a fee, but you can bet that a driver for the president gets paid a whole heck of a lot more. You also need to consider that someone working at an important position in the park might get targeted for extortion. THEY have their own personal security compromised by that position. You can’t act like all they’ve done is show up to any old corporation to fill a chair. You also can’t act like their work description is accurate until THEY have assessed it as accurate. If you knew precisely what was needed yourself, you wouldn’t need an expert. Nedry had a point. You are paying for the service AND expertise. While he might have been greedy and lacking in character, if he’s getting the job done then why not pay him?? When he shows up and almost immediately starts saying “our contract doesn’t accurately reflect the nature of work involved in this,” you’re supposed to listen to your new employee and work with them. Hammond brought a lot of this on himself, and it makes it even more tragic when you think of all the people harmed in the crossfire.
I was always curious about what "financial issues" they banter back and forth about in the first movie was about. Also it was always interesting to me knowing that the whole thing could have likely gone off without a hitch if they hadn't been sabotaged. The only real issue that would needed to be addressed would have been the animals gaining the ability to breed.
I don't know about in the movie, but in the book Nerdy lost thousands of dollars due to Hammond adding several things not covered in the contract and blackmailing Nerdy into eating the costs associated by calling other people that had contracts with Nedry and lying to them about him.
There is a classic Michael Chrichton plot moment in the book when the visiting science team is challenging Hammond's science team on reproduction. The Nublar team has motion trackers counting them all over the island. Every time they birth a dino they up the tracking database counter by one, and any time they lose a dino they decrement by one. So every time they have the computer survey the island it gets back that same "correct" number. While arguing back and forth, the visiting team instructs Hammond's team to enter an unexpectedly high number. Hammond's team pushes back with a "why would anybody do that?", but they do it anyway. The survey runs again and, obviously, the new survey counts far more dinos than Hammond's team has in their database. This is Chrichton's key moment pointing to the inevitability of human fail. He put at least one moment like this in all of his science novels (in Andromeda Strain it was Dr. Leavitt having an epileptic attack in response to the positive test blinking lights). Humans prone to human frailties created a system and made a minor human decision that ended up being a key fault indicator which revealed the infinite number of challenges where humans will go wrong in trying to master and contain an entire ecosystem. Dinos breeding was merely Chrichton's shorthand for the folly of the entire enterprise. Spielberg tapped into the vast pool of fail opportunity to add all kinds of other human mistakes and create a cascade of suspense and adventure. Controlling dino breeding was far from "the only real issue".
They are basically holding Nedry hostage, blackmailing him to do more work without compensation and Hammond wants to say Nedry's financial issues are "his problem".
My favorite is in the book where they find Nedry’s body and just leave it. “What about him?” “What about him? We have things to do” And on a more morbid note, I found it interesting that the dilophosaurus didn’t really eat him much. They found him with his intestines spilled out and head chewed up, but most the damage was done post death by compies. It’s like the dilophosaurus killed him just because he was an asshole, not because it wanted to eat.
Some slight physical differences, but the same character. The developers of the game version intentionally made Gerry different, they admitted it, they wanted to have creative liberties in developing his personality since he appeared in only one scene in the film.

Jurassic Park on the SNES was sub-par at best, but had some great music. You picked what I always thought was the best track from the game and used it as BGM. You sir, are a legend, and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
John Hammond: Dennis, our lives are in your hands and you have butterfingers?! Nedry: (laughs sarcastically) I'm totally unappreciated in my time. You can run this park with minimal staff for up to three days. You think that kind of automation is easy... or cheap?
Gotta love that NES Jurassic Park music.... Brings back memories of my best friend and I staying up really late at his house playing that game on his SNES.... good times.
I feel like Nedry would have gotten a bonus, after Jurassic Park was operational. While he may have had the work done in just under 3 weeks, he apparently hadn't finished the job. Considering he had to come back when Grant and his team were there and fix it
Hammond is portrayed as a rather idealistic but incredibly shortsighted individual in the novel (he was also unable to admit his own mistakes and kept blaming everyone except himself of the Park's failure right until he's killed). Nedry betrays Hammond precisely because Hammond never truly told him what he needed the systems for, likely to surprise him with the "awe" of living dinosaurs. Needless to say Nedry was not amused and thus kept demanding an increased salary due to the changes the system needed. The fact Hammond blackmailed him into continuing his work, as both the comics and the novel make clear, was the final nail in the coffin.
I love how in the Topps Lost World comics, Ian Malcolm can be seen illustrated with a mustache at times! It makes him look nothing like Malcolm. But in that Lost Word series, it contains the most sad thing in the Jurassic Park comics for me. In the 4th issue on the first page, it has everyone being attacked by raptors in the long grass. You then see Ajay, standing alone, surrounded by death and Raptors. He has this terribly sad and shameful face, just staring into nothingness, awaiting his demise. He probably is thinking on how he tried to stop these people from going into the long grass, but his failure to do so resulted in their deaths. The comic reads "Ajay has seen many animals die. Thats the part of the occupation as a tracker watching the quarry die." The fact that he could have ran, he could have escaped, but in the end he opts for "death of resigned grace" "Even blood-stained quiet dignity seems best."
I absolutely love your videos. You’re insightful and you cleave so much wonderment from the pass of the books, the comics and the scripts of the films and games. Thanks for sharing your fancies with us. It’s a true delight to behold. 🤘
I played it a few times. Honestly, it was no fun. The Sega counterpart was better. The problem with the SNES version is you spend so much time going back over the same things: search a cave, search the jungles, find a code for a door, rinse and repeat for two hours. The game producer just wanted to take advantage of the JP name to sell a mind numbingly boring game.
Love the comics thank you for sharing them big huge fan of the Jurassic Park series I remember watching it for the first time when I was like 5 when it first came out on VHS I was so scared at the T-Rex scene that I ran into bed we only had one VHS machine at that time but an awesome memory thank you again love you work definitely sub
I had Jurassic Park comic Volume 1 as a kid and read through it about five times or more then one day had the crazy idea to rip the comic book to shreds i stopped myself from doing this for about every day for two weeks then one day tore the comic up into about fifty pieces. I regret that today but have purchased Vol 1 and 2 and will see about getting the others in the series of comics. I have seen all three Jurassic Park films on VHS, DVD and now Blu-Ray. The Jurassic World movie was great and not a let down at all. I am looking forward to seeing JW2 in theaters and playing the movie at home. Great series i like that you use Jurassic Park (SNES) music in this video nice touch.
That explains a lot more about how and why Nedry did what he did I’ve always hated Nedrys death in the movie but not in the book and I have no clue why!
I love your work. I know you have talked about the Shaving cream can at point in your videos. I would love to see a video talking about why no one really want after that can outside of the one video game. I understand that there was only a 36 hour coolant life with the can. But even if you didn’t have a living embryos you still had strands of DNA inside embryos. Making it more cost-effective to send a team in for the can. Instead of working hours on hours to make strands of DNA in fixing the gaps in it. To me even if you were an outside company like the one who paid Dennis for the Can you would still go after it knowing it’s out there. And knowing that there was DNA out there And a unemployed Dr Wu. Plus I would think the dna would have been Viable for years.
"A bastard like dennis", this man learned computer science in a time when no one appreciated, not even the people who needed it the most. 4x your salary isn't worth it when you work 18 hours a day (I doubt he was paid hourly), and have no internet back then, and nothing to do after you are done with your job.

“What about him?”
“What about him? We have things to do”
And on a more morbid note, I found it interesting that the dilophosaurus didn’t really eat him much. They found him with his intestines spilled out and head chewed up, but most the damage was done post death by compies. It’s like the dilophosaurus killed him just because he was an asshole, not because it wanted to eat.
This Gerry Harding just points out further how different the movie and game version are.
Some slight physical differences, but the same character. The developers of the game version intentionally made Gerry different, they admitted it, they wanted to have creative liberties in developing his personality since he appeared in only one scene in the film.
I heard that the developers joked that he “shaved his mustache”right after the scene he was in.

Hello... NEWMAN
Ricardo Rodrigues Hello...Jerry.
Someone needs to edit that I the movie hahaha
I love hearing these back stories!
"I'm truly unappreciated in my time" - Denis Nedry
I didn't even know there were comics before I started watching your videos. Thanks for sharing!
Thank YOU for watching! :D
[Satellite Phone Ringtone]
lol
Run...
I think rexy thought Dennis was a big piece of bacon.
lol
The best video on this series, I think. You're correct, he's quite a good character.
I like how you use the snes Jurassic Park music, love it!!
Hey thanks haha!
I'll just say it, I'm very impressed at how quick these come and how good each one is. Good on ya ^^
Well geez thank you! Thats awesome to hear! :D
I absolutely love that you put the music from the Genesis game in the vid. 10/10
Great video. Nice touch putting the music from the JP game when you play as the raptor.
Thanks haha
Hey nice work keep up the good work of more Jurassic Park comics thank you so Much
Thanks dude!
Klayton Fioriti your welcome
Man, these comic books sound amazing! You build suspense with your animation too!
Dennis was a plotting greedy mastermind. (INTP in Meyers Briggs?)
Really love your content Klay. It's really interesting on getting a new perspective on jurassic park as I love dinosaurs:D keep it up I'll be here for every vid !
Hey thanks! :)
Any time man =)
In the movie it sounded like Nedry had finance issues rather than just wanting more money. Maybe a bit of both?
I had this comic when I was younger, I loved it
I really dig the use of the Sega Jurassic Park music, it was a nice touch to signal the menacing idea Nedry had.
Nevermind the awesome content. The fact i wasnt automatically obligated to like and subscribe really pushes the quality of your videoes and actually makes me want to. Well played.
lol thanks man! haha
Jurassic Park on the SNES was sub-par at best, but had some great music. You picked what I always thought was the best track from the game and used it as BGM. You sir, are a legend, and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
Ah, found the name... "Triceratops Trot" lol.
Brings back memories of my best friend and I staying up really late at his house playing that game on his SNES.... good times.
Hammond sparing no expense except on paying the man who held their lives in his hands. Or hiring more programmers, like a team of some kind...
I wonder if Rexy is lowkey jealous that the Dilophosaurs got Nedry yet she failed to. XD
lol
Nice video, Klayton! Can't wait for the TLW comics!
Thanks Gabriel!
Anyone else here going to binge watch the entire JP series until JWFK comes out?
Awesome man you make the greatest content of all times
Who are the best place to go when people want hear about Jurassic Park
Hey thanks! And I guess the best place to go is Jurassic Outpost!
Nedry walks into the jeep unknowingly dooming himself*
Dilophosaur:'holds out tarantula'
Nedry:'screams'
lol
Sebastain Lover of scary no instead of a tarantula it's a salad 😂
Or even better, a diet plan
Your channel is amazing. I really like your videos. It's the only channel that I like the video before watching it, because I know I gonna enjoy it.
Well damn, I really appreciate that! Thank you man!
thank you for using the 16bit soundtrack from the Genesis game. haven't heard that in a long time!
I feel like Nedry would have gotten a bonus, after Jurassic Park was operational.
While he may have had the work done in just under 3 weeks, he apparently hadn't finished the job. Considering he had to come back when Grant and his team were there and fix it
Also, do you have a Patreon?
Hammond was short sighted in hiring just one person to handle the whole computer system for the park. No oversight. Hammond- yes costs spared !
And down from the clouds comes master computer technician, Butter Fingers!
lol
I love this back story, and the SNES & Geneses JP music!
I absolutely love your videos. You’re insightful and you cleave so much wonderment from the pass of the books, the comics and the scripts of the films and games. Thanks for sharing your fancies with us. It’s a true delight to behold. 🤘
I immediately recognized the Jurassic Park SNES video game music in the background. I haven't played it in decades but still own it.
Maxey SAAAAAAAAAME I was really hoping someone else caught it too!
I too was happy to hear that. Imo the Genesis game was far superior.
Dino Disney land? XD “WELCOME TO DINO DISNEY LAND WHERE YOU RUN AWAY IN FEAR!!!”
XD lmao
lol
Welcome to Dino Disneyland, where the Pirates of the Caribbean DO kill you when the ride breaks down!
"I am sorry about your financial problems, Dennis. I really am. But they are. Your. Problems."
Dennis: I'm about to wreck this man's whole career.
Totally awesome! Love it!
best jp info on utube hands down
Great stuff! Love the channel!
Hey thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying my stuff!
Nice, at 06:08 using the "HQ" music from the SNES Jurassic Park 2 game ;)
Hey! I recognize that music! Around 2:30 the background music is from the SNES Jurassic park game. I could never beat it lol
Love your videos keep up the good work
SPARED NO EXPENSE
It's about time this came out in the open. The movie did a terrible job of explaining why Nedry was so miserable.
I don't think it did because you can see what kind of guy he is a guy that is stingy and that wants cash he is basically greedy in alot of ways
This comic completely lied about Nedrys motivations.
Poor Nerdy. He could have flipped his income into shares... Smart people can be so dumb
Who's a good boy? Dilopho is! Dilopho is.
Dilo's a good boi
Lost World Comics are next? Oh hell yes bring it on man "Bring it on Man"
Yeah dude!
Hammond should have had Nedry hooked to the raptors' feeding machine, that would have done the trick perfectly.
lol
That explains a lot more about how and why Nedry did what he did
I’ve always hated Nedrys death in the movie but not in the book and I have no clue why!
3 dislikes??! Who the hell would dislike this?!?!
So Nedry wasn't cheated, it's his own damn ego.
And thay same ego made him greedy...and eventually got him a nice date with a Pair of Dilos
Thanks for this upload. I hated Nedry before now i really hate him. He deserved every bit of what he got.
So godamn interesting! I might get into the JP comics too. I love 'em!
My favourite part of JW was when they found the old visitors centre and started up the old Jeep.
Great video 👍
Hi! Great video!! I was wondering what is the music of your intros? keep up the good work! ;)
Led Foot by Ethan Meixsell!
:D
I can almost hear his weird scream now
I love your work.
Great video keep up the good work😊😀
Thanks! :D
Thanks for these videos! I’ve read the books and seen some of the movies, but I’ve never read (or seen) the comics, so it’s awesome to have u analyse and read them!
Thank YOU for watching! :D
Yeah! You don't fu** with Mossad! Oops! Sorry, the trailer for "7 Days in Entebbe" just played before the video...still Mossad is pretty bad ass!
