Hypothetically, they still could incorporate these early designs into official lore, as versions or the earliest attempts in trying to clone a viable T. rex? But like Crichton said in The Lost World about cutting edge technologies, intial yields are very very low and perhaps some of these designs could be recycled in official Jurassic lore as some of the various first attempts to get a viable T. rex, but due to genetic errors, missing or damage segments that couldn't function properly, the early efforts were rather deformed and unhealthy. Welcome back and Happy 2022, Klayton (😃)! I actually first became aware of these early T-Rex designs thanks to Derrick Davis' Facebook page for his "Jurassic Time" channel & site. The 'Frog Mutant' one definitely gives off more 'classic 1950s dinosaur movie' vibes, and Derrick even posted pre-production photos of a full-size sketch showing that the T-Rex was _initially_ going to walk *upright* before the more up-to-date paleontology knowledge was incorporated into the design process.
To be honest the T-Rex design is a classic. because it was genetically engineered it probably wouldn’t look exactly like a T-Rex, even Dr Wu said they might look very different in Jurassic world, so it still gave you the monster version everyone was hoping for and being afraid of it, but at the same time still portraying them as animals which is what Steven Spielberg and Michael Crichton was trying to convey.
"even Dr Wu said they might look very different in Jurassic world" That's just a retcon, a way to explain why the dinosaurs back in the 1993 version, the trademarkable ones, don't look like actual dinosaurs as a means to appease the modern audience that now knows how these animals actually looked like.
@@mgacy2957 You’re absolutely right if anything it was a very clumsy way of trying to justify it, although in their defence at the time they didn’t really have much more evidence than the ones they designed. However DNA dictates how we look to our smallest details, if they were mutated and spliced with other genes they would in truth probably have very different characteristics. So it’s not entirely a bad explanation. At least one that’s very plausible. In the book they even went further on into this when Wu wanted to make them look more ferocious, but Hammond wanted them to be as they were which at the time was a very good appearance of them.
I think what made the Tyrannosaurus work so well in JP was not how they looked, but how the acted and moved. They were fast and predatory compared to the plodding beasts in previous dinosaur movies. One's that formally used stop action models.

I love to see a history of the dilophosaur design- the novel came up with the venom and had a leopard pattern camouflage thing going but the movie came up with the cobra hood intimidation behavior- both iconic imaginings for a obscure dinosaur that really brought it to life.
I love the Jurassic Park T-Rex design, and I think the film wouldn’t be as memorable if they went for one of the earlier designs (especially the frog-like T-Rex head bust).
As a fan of the jurassic park/world franchise except the animated one, I actually didn't know this old rex design and thanks for all the info and I like all your videos especially Canon info and jurassic park stuff.
Klayton, your video on this matter was amazing! Put me right back in the people's minds when designing the T. rex. To me this shows the triumph of team effort. If we got only one individual's input on the design it would probably not be iconic at all. The design we do have, though, is pure genius and derived from ideas from everyone involved, which, I don't know why, feels very comforting and epitomizes what is Jurassic Park all about!
I find the design process of the JP T. rex design very interesting because the JP T. rex is the most iconic and recognizable dinosaur design in film. Hearing the early stages of the JP T. rex having more of an amphibian look and making the T.rex to have a monstrous look is very interesting based on the pictures from this video. Thankfully the Jurassic Park production finalized the final look for the T. Rex and those it make movie history.

Love it.

Hope you had a good holiday! I hit the like button as always Klayton! I actually had no idea about any of this, that’s why I love Klayton’s channel! Still to this day it informs me and everyone of new things we didn’t know about the Jurassic Franchise!
The T rex's amphibious design almost looks like it could have been from Tim Burton's version of Jurassic Park where it would be an animated horror film.
First of all, thank you so much for always finding these super obscure facts and info. I have no idea how you do this, but I'm very that you do! Secondly, yeah, not that the other designs were...bad...but Rexy is definitely the best. I'm glad she ended up looking the way she does. I think she's awesome and I know I'm not alone. ❤
I’ve always loved the Rex from the first film because of how animal like it is. It’s not just some movie monster hellbent on killing everything in sight, you can tells it’s just a large carnivores behaving naturally in a new environment, which keeps the move so grounded. So I’m glad they chose a design that reflects that. I feel like bright colors, spikes, or alien like wrinkles would have really taken away from the creditability of the creature.
God that design compared to the T. rex we all know in love today is just bizarre. It looks like something out of the old old dinosaur movies such as 100 million bce.
I always love seeing concept art of... well, anything, but especially those of my favorite films and shows. As for these early JP T. rex designs, I kind of like the frog-looking ones for its bizarre appearance and playing around with the gene-splicing concept, and also the more monstrous designs for working with their 'copyright' intentions. But even with all of that in mind, I'm very satisfied with the version we got the franchise. It's just so iconic and a great representation of what defines a T. rex; at least in terms of film designs.
Always fascinating to hear how much effort and conflict goes into movie design work. We lucked out in Jurassic Park, as the final T-Rex design is one of the best things to ever appear on film!
The fandom would be extremely triggered if they found out the T. Rex was intentionally designed as a monster than an accurate dinosaur design and would also have spikes like how they're all getting mad over the Giganotosaurus
It's honestly kinda irritating watching the fandom demand scientifically accurate dinosaurs in this franchise when they KNOW that genetic engineering altering the dinosaur's appearances was already an established plot point. There are so many dinosaurs designs that are exclusively unique to the Jurassic franchise that scraping them this far into the game for the sake of "accuracy" would be, in my opinion, spitting on the franchise's legacy and iconography. Which is why for me, I'm not particularly critical of dinosaurs in the newer films being scientifically accurate as much as I'm critical of them being well designed. I think the JW designs of the baryonyx, allosaurus, and pteranodons look awful and are among my least favorite Jurassic movie dinosaurs, because they look scrawny, generic and come off as last minute pitches. They don't have that raw, powerful Stan Winston flare. People could argue with the inaccuracy of the JP Spinosaurus, Pteranodons and Dilo, but those dinosaurs were so iconic and well designed during the Stan Winston effects era that they got away with it. At the end of the day, Jurassic Park and Jurassic World are movies, not documentaries. People who demand scientific accuracy in these films after all these years seem to forget this.
Ethan S., the paleontologist and consultant for Battle at Big Rock (who I'm friends with and who's appeared on this channel) said the same thing about these creative processes. He got to consult and send sketches for references, but in the end they only used like half or 2/3 of the stuff he suggested.
So the T-rex with frog looks that's interesting and new so my guess is I think they would have made T-Rex look like the 1930s and the 1950s version of the T-Rex
These designs could work as designs for other large Tyrannosaurs within the Jurassic series like Tarbosaurus,Zuchengtyrannus,Bistahiversor,Gorgosaurus and Daspletosaurus, maybe with a little modification maybe even a Yutyrannus.
Now that’s some interesting behind the scenes info , o honestly thought the indoraptor and indominus Rex were the only Dino’s with multiple concept art ideas.
i don't know, i kinda get skull island Meat eater vibes from it, or really any old school movie dino, which isent bad, in fact i really like the look of it since i love thouse kinds of film dinosaurs, but i guess it was for the best they went with the more scientifically accurate one, both since it's instantly recognizable and works for what they were going for...i still want to emphasis that it main works because that's what they were going for, scientifically accurate dosent automatically mean good
Just imagine how bad it would be if Universal chose the more monstrous design. As it gets famous, the media will make out a general Tyrannosaurus as a monstrosity since they would compare it with the InGen rex (I know the final InGen rex is already meant to be a movie monster but it could have been worse). I'm literally imagining the meme of the Golden Lab and the Werewolf side by side and the Golden Lab being the final InGen rex or the accurate version and the Werewolf being the WIP monstrous design. I'm glad Universal used their influence wisely.
I love seeing all of this pre-production stuff! Like you said, it’s interesting to see how these ideas and designs changed. I personally think the final design is nearly perfect as it’s a good balance of scientific accuracy and “scary Hollywood Dino.”
Love how t-rex evolved in the preproduction and finally in dominion looks more like jp rex. One note, one friends and I months ago we notice the t-rex from JW and FK looked more like the phil tippett maquette used for go motion. Check it.
Spielberg wanting to make the dinosaur less biologically accurate for the sake of spectacle is just a perfect parallel to the theme of the novel. Truly a John Hammond move 10/10
"We have always filled gaps in the genome with the DNA of other animals. And if the genetic code was pure, many of them would look quite different. But you didn't ask for reality, you asked for more teeth." Edit: If they had gone with the original design, it would look like Carnosaur, which was scary enough.
After this got to say that the designs of the dinosaurs they got to put a lot of effort to it so whether some designs look great or not I got to admit it looks awesome once on screen I mean I can imagine doing that from one design to another it has me go through a lot since I like drawing it goes from one thing to next and it’s crazy but in the end turns out great.
I'm so glad they dropped the frog features. Especially since in the book, Grant does tell Malcom that the animal is indeed "Convincing", meaning what he expected a Dinosaur to look like.
Austin Finance really cool after my own Monster dinosaur designs very good tips to where I can have it copyrightable. I've always loved your videos Klayton, there's always a wealth of knowledge to be gained from them
The iguana rex could have been neat, not a fan of the spines, but I love the green & black coloring. The bull is my fav rex because of his coloring too. Ultimately I love Rexie's design and am glad she's what they went with.
I love tyrannosaurus rex, in fact i love those early designs of the Jurassic park t-rex before the final was even made. In fact i think those early designs of the tyrannosaurus rex could make into the other tyrannosaurids if they ever choose to include them in other t-rex relatives such as Albertosaurus and Gorgosaurus.
Well the Frog DNA in the book was only attributed to the dinosaurs that were breeding. The Raptors, Hypsies, and Compys were some that had it but neither of the 2 Rexes incorporated genus Rana DNA in their genomes. There wouldn’t have been any reason for the Trex to resemble a frog.
@@TrexTamer yeah exactly ! It has such a strong "90's vibe" to it, It would be a waste to not recycle it in some animated show and/or some prequel to the original movie
The Bull T-rex design IMO is the best tyrannosaurus rex portrayed on screen to date. I think they could have stuck to the anatomy of the dinosaur according to the fossil - just going off by the AMNH5027 specimen and still have that look the film version rex ended up with but oh well.
I am confident that if the TRex looked like that, I wouldnt have watched the movies, because these movies were one of the first movies i saw and it shpaed my life in so many ways.... Glad they made it the way it is now

Agreed. It would have taken the franchise in a much more horror movie direction.
Im glad they went with the final design of the T-Rex its look is iconic and most recognizable t rex in the movie industry.
The green iguana T Rex looks like the buck from The Lost World. Glad we got Roberta as she is.
thanks for making the intro less noisy
I’ve always loved the Rex from the first film because of how animal like it is. It’s not just some movie monster hellbent on killing everything in sight, you can tells it’s just a large carnivores behaving naturally in a new environment, which keeps the move so grounded.
So I’m glad they chose a design that reflects that. I feel like bright colors, spikes, or alien like wrinkles would have really taken away from the creditability of the creature.
God that design compared to the T. rex we all know in love today is just bizarre. It looks like something out of the old old dinosaur movies such as 100 million bce.
I didn't know Mark Hallett and Gregory S. Paul were involved in making Jurassic Park, they are my favorite paleo artists.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but so I hear WARPATH music?!? 😍
Always fascinating to hear how much effort and conflict goes into movie design work. We lucked out in Jurassic Park, as the final T-Rex design is one of the best things to ever appear on film!
It's interesting how the design evolved into the one we know so well
Shut up
The fandom would be extremely triggered if they found out the T.
4:49, the design of the bulky Rex looks just like the Sharptooth from The Land Before Time.
Is it me or does the frog model and monster styles seem more like something you’d see in the carnosaur series of b movies.
6:30 It's a shame we didn't get this version, as it's by far the most anatomically accurate (facially anyhow, arms notwithstanding).
Can fans just give up on wanting the dinosaurs to be accurate? I mean they are man made in the movies after all... so they won't be correct either way
Best T.rex design of all time
Now that’s some interesting behind the scenes info , o honestly thought the indoraptor and indominus Rex were the only Dino’s with multiple concept art ideas.
Regardless of why it was made to look more monsterous, it's design is still very unique and impressive.
The frog head looked too much like Godzilla
@Jurassic Hero Probably Showa since it’s head looked like a frog
@Jurassic Hero Showa
i don't know, i kinda get skull island Meat eater vibes from it, or really any old school movie dino, which isent bad, in fact i really like the look of it since i love thouse kinds of film dinosaurs, but i guess it was for the best they went with the more scientifically accurate one, both since it's instantly recognizable and works for what they were going for...i still want to emphasis that it main works because that's what they were going for, scientifically accurate dosent automatically mean good
Just imagine how bad it would be if Universal chose the more monstrous design.
Do more of these videos with other dinos
I'm 100% certain the more frog/monster-like design was used in concept art to pitch the original universal ride
I must I like this old concept for the JP rex,and this video was very awesome
Remember that T-Rex from the car commercial in RoboCop? That's what the Frog-Rex reminds me of.
"We have always filled gaps in the genome with the DNA of other animals. And if the genetic code was pure, many of them would look quite different. But you didn't ask for reality, you asked for more teeth."
Edit: If they had gone with the original design, it would look like Carnosaur, which was scary enough.
The alt reminds me of the T-rexes from older movies where they walked pretty much upright and were animated in stop-motion.
I’m still convinced the T-Rex walked on all fours. I just like to imagine it honestly
It's also Universal, their designs tend to look weird no matter what XD
The frog model/unused version makes me think of old dinosaur movies when they stood up straight lol very oldschool
Someday, could you make a video that tells what all the dinosaur sounds in the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies were made from?
Interesting. I'm glad it turned out the way it did, but the image at 1:03 looks cool.
i been wacthing your channel for a long time Love the videos
I gotta say, I think it actually looks kinda Cool like a mordern version of a classic movie dinosaur...and i unironically love it
I'm glad they made it the way they did
I'm glad they did the final look.
I’m glad we got the version we got
I'm so glad they dropped the frog features. Especially since in the book, Grant does tell Malcom that the animal is indeed "Convincing", meaning what he expected a Dinosaur to look like.
I'm always a fan of concept art of dinosaurs
I can’t believe how different the JP1 T. rex could have looked if they choose one of these designs
Awesome video thanks Klay 🦖
That super frog Rex one looks horrifying. If it was in the movie, not many people would have a proper sleep.
Austin Finance really cool after my own Monster dinosaur designs very good tips to where I can have it copyrightable. I've always loved your videos Klayton, there's always a wealth of knowledge to be gained from them
I’m perfectly fine with the final design for the JP T. rex. It’s just so iconic and badass. Also, Happy New Year, my fellow Jurassic fans!
I kinda like the frog-mutant. It takes into account the lore of amphibian dna
I'm happy we got the best version
I love that Frog Rex bust ! That's definitely a monstruous design and something i would like to see within the JP's franchise.
Preferably in something like chaos effect or something
@@TrexTamer yeah exactly ! It has such a strong "90's vibe" to it, It would be a waste to not recycle it in some animated show and/or some prequel to the original movie
Great video, love learning about this stuff.
The Bull T-rex design IMO is the best tyrannosaurus rex portrayed on screen to date.
I think they could have stuck to the anatomy of the dinosaur according to the fossil - just going off by the AMNH5027 specimen and still have that look the film version rex ended up with but oh well.
The T-Rex Design Production in a Nutshell:
A Big Mess
I am confident that if the TRex looked like that, I wouldnt have watched the movies, because these movies were one of the first movies i saw and it shpaed my life in so many ways....
Glad they made it the way it is now
What is the name of your music at the very beginning of the video?
6:38 the head of the t rex with its jaw open looks absoluty like something that would be in your nightmares cause of the teeth
I like most of the old Jurassic Park T-Rex concepts, especially Mark Hallett's which if a new T-rex would be added in upcoming movies, I would like it to be directly based on those old design.
Hope you jokeing, that chicken is not even close to finall design in any aspect, I hope they bring back the most masive “Rexy” from JP1 or even bigger one
@@borisp9163 I talk the model since 1.03 in this video.
