AngelFrosthia A lot of cats do not like tops on their litter boxes. In the wild they are vulnerable while using the bathroom. It’s instinctive behavior. They like as many escape routes as possible while going to the bathroom.

I think the drawback being that some cats dislike them, and if you have a multi-cat household where they dislike each other they can feel unsafe. If neither of those apply to your cat(s), there are no drawbacks.

It’s a bit small for your size of cat. Also, out of sight, out of mind. The ideal: litter boxes, although they should be placed in a quiet area of the house, should be open to the air, and observing urine and feces on a daily basis when one scoops can give clues to an owner about their cat’s health. Being able to watch your cat use the bathroom can also give vital clues to your cat’s health, too.

I got my cats an extra extra large litter box (plenty of room to move around and get in a comfortable position) that has a clear hood so I can keep an eye on them. I drilled holes into the top of the lid to give it further ventilation, not just from the opening in the front.
Being able to see my cats in the box is so important for me because one of my cats develops crystals in his bladder from time to time, making it painful and difficult for him to urinate. The condition is very treatable and manageable, but I never know when he’s gotten a build up of crystals until he starts to struggle to pee. Because by the time he’s showing signs of difficulty to urinate, it’s already pretty bad and I can get him the treatment he needs right away. He does eat special food twice a week that’s designed for his condition, but stress and age make it less predictable. If I don’t keep an eye on his urination habits, he can get a serious UTI. Worst case scenario, urine backs up to his kidneys, or his bladder explodes because he can’t relive the pressure. The last time he got a serious build up, he needed a catheter inserted to relieve the pressure.
Your mention of enclosed litter boxes preventing owners from being able to monitor their cat’s health really struck a cord with me due to my own personal experience. Now I can’t even think of getting a litter box that hinders my ability to monitor my cats. I like the hood to keep the litter mess under control, but after that it needs ventilation, and to not block vision.

please make sure that ur cat fits comfortably in the box. if they leave faster than normal, then they don’t fit in it. cats can end up injured when the box is to small (ive seen cats that get out to quickly and end up hurting their paw(s)) they can also pee over top of it instead of in the litter box (completely miss the litter, pee on the wall, pee on the floor ect.) just watch to be sure! 💗

Cats do not really enjoy enclosed litter boxes. Fun fact, cats enjoy doing their business outside. However if you live in an apartment, rather get an open litter box as cats will get anxious if you give them and enclosed box. They prefer to do their business outside or in a litterbox that's outside because they can easily detect any threats and escape, and the smell of an enclosed litter box aggitattes them as they are clean animals, so they'll end up doing their business outside the box.

Here's what I did. So easy and reasonablely priced. I had 2 crates from Michael's. I had a piece of wood in gararage. I have one crate length up on each side ,2 litter boxes in between the crates on floor. Cut the wood to make it so it fits to the crate and liter boxes size. Stained the crates and wood. Litter boxes in between crates. In one crate is litter stored, the other is litter scoops and deoderizers. On top I have my pretty decor. Putting the crates length up it gives privacy but yet it looks like a piece of furniture. So hard to explain, but I had seen this online for almost $300. I had the things. To buy , 2 crates at Michael's for $10 a piece. The wood top would be about 10 I'm guessing cut to size. Less than $30 all in if you have stain which I did. I have multiple cats so mine has 2 litter boxes without lids. My cats love , love it!

Cats have a very sensitive sense of smell. Their urine produces ammonia. In an enclosed litter box, the ammonia collects and can't escape. That way your cat always has to sit in their own lung hurting gas box when they need to use the toilet.
I mean how would you feel, if your entire bathroom reaked of ammonia and you had to smell that all the time you had to sit in the toilet?
Cats use these litter boxes if they have no other choice. If you provide them a safe(!) and undisturbed(!) open litter box, no cat will voluntarily go back into that ammonia hell.
I really hate that people value 'having to vacuum less' over the health and well-being of their cats.

I also plan on adding a recessed charging station to the top so I can use that to run lights for the cats during their private time. I'll also be adding carbon flaps to the front so no smell escapes.
Going off this design I'll also have to build a double depth hallway table so more boxes can fit in both ends, one on each side. We have four cats and run five litter boxes, so I have a lot of work cut out for me this week.

My cat makes a HUGE mess with litter. I’ve tried so many different materials/types of litter but he still tracks it everywhere. We got a tent litter box cover from chewy that has an entrance and then a little “hallway” to the litter box and it has a mat under the whole thing to help catch litter and a litter mat outside the tent. This for sure help but I still have to sweep/vacuum every time I scoop. If I want to clean the mats I can just shake them outside or I use the hose on my vacuum. I like the look of your ikea hack but the way your cat violently jumped down… would totally cause a mess with my kitty

Trimming that existing one you had was probably one of the better choices you could’ve gone with because it gives you a deeper pan to work with so you have less mess and less chance of damaged furniture.

My cat had an enclosed litter box and he started peeing everywhere in the house. I got him a normal open one and he stopped. I keep his box on the floor in the hallway closet and keep the door open just a tiny bit so he can go in and out

This is great but I got one from bed bath and beyond which is basically exactly like this but with a little cat head kind of thing in the middle so the cats can go in and out easily and a handle for the door so we can clean it easily. It looks great too!

Using the old box will give your cat some familiarity, which is really important.

I had a problem with this. Bought a ragdoll kitten, and the breeders had this kind of furniture. Once she came to us, she only pooped behind the TV cabinet..... So breeders, please don't 😂

I recommend a 'door mat' to catch the litter on kitty's toes when she comes out!

How to make changing the litter box more of a pain in the ass than it was before.
