    This week I’m taking the OM System E-P7 out on an early photowalk in local nature reserve Solleveld. It’s my first trip with it and I’m curious to see how it’ll perform! Besides the E-P7, I’ve also brought my trusty E-M1 mark iii with the 100-400mm from Olympus. Sit back and walk along! :)

    I have one. I couldn’t think of a better travel camera. It’s the right size, has a color mode switch on the front as an added bonus. User friendly scene modes for inexperienced photographers. It the Oly 14-42 & 17 f1.8 are a solid travel kit. I opted for the Panny 20 f1.7, 12-32 & 35-100. It doesn’t want for much, save weather sealing and phase detect auto focus,…though travelling you hardly need the latter.

    The E-P7 was the first new camera from OM systems. It has the sensor and electronics of the best Olympus, the OM1. The form factor is amazingly compact and it's beautifully made. Together with the extensive Olympus and Panasonic lens range, IMHO this is one of the best travel and walk-about cameras. BTW the electronic shutter goes to 1/16000, and there is no difference outside, so not sure this is an issue.

    Interesting video Bart. I seldom see an Olympus EP7 review online. With regards to the shutter speed, there's an electronic shutter available, right? Up to 1/16000. With the type of photography that I just saw, I think you could use it so that you could use the f1.7 aperture. I had a similar challenge on a a different system. I used f1.2, 1/10000 shutter speed, with the sun just risen. I was able to take portraits with blurred background, with the sun shining bright.

      Thanks Edwin! You’re right about the electronical shutter, I hadn’t considered that at the time. It’s something I rarely use but for this use case it does makes sense. Will be trying that!

      @@bartjanverhoef On my Panasonic cameras there is a setting called Shutter type. It automatically swicthes from Mechanical to Electronic according to the camera need. I would be surprised Olympus cameras doesn't have a similar parameter.
      It took me a while to figure out of this. Those camera are so feature reach.

      @@laurentyarp514 yeah, on Oly you just open the SCP (Super Control Panel) and choose mech/electronic shutter. it very easy, just 3 clicks & scroll, and you set.

    Nice video, and some beautiful photos too! Quick question: whenever you showed a photo, you played a shutter-click sound. Is that actually the sound of the E-P7's shutter, or a sound effect? I've heard that the E-P7 has a very loud mechanical shutter and I want to know if that (which indeed was VERY loud) was it. Thanks!

    • @bartjanverhoef
      @bartjanverhoef  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is! I’m glad you noticed, I recorded both the E-P7 and the E-M1 mark iii shutter sounds to have the correct soundeffect in the video:). They’re not as hard irl as you’d think from this video though, it’s just how I added them seperately to the video to go with the photos.

    Are there any 27 or 35mm lenses compatible with it? I got it for a good price with the 14 to 42 on Amazon but have a feeling prime lens quality will be better long term so I’m looking for something not too wide but compact enough like pancakes

    • @bartjanverhoef
      @bartjanverhoef  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Assuming you mean m43 equivalents of 27 or 35mm focal lenghts then yes, there are! There’s the Panasonic Leica Summilux 15mm f/1.7 and The Olympus 17mm f/1.8 that roughly cover those focal lenghts and both are outstandig - and seriously compact - prime lenses.

    Do you think the focus even with a relatively slow lens like the Pana 20mm is ok for mildly non stationary subjects ? Like point-and-shoot candid portraits with some aid from face recognition? Camera has only contrast detect AF but if not proper tracking of the subject is required it could be good enough.

    • @bartjanverhoef
      @bartjanverhoef  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah for mildly non stationary subjects it’s fine imo. Like you say, if you don’t need to rely on tracking (you can forget about that with this lens... ;)) it’s ok. I’d shoot a portrait with it, or even people walking on a normal pace, but definetely not my kids running around for example, no chance with this lens.

    • @SimS-uh2fg
      @SimS-uh2fg ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bartjanverhoef Thanks for the feedback ! The kind of subjects I have in mind are exactly what you mentioned, people and kids that might not be exactly still, but not running around either. The 20mm should be as far as I know one of the slowest focusing lenses of the M4/3 system. Is the tracking af-c at least serviceable for easy subjects with faster lenses ? My interest in this camera is that I have a heavy dslr setup and a Fuji XF10. I got accustomed to the latter and enjoy the experience of travelling very light and shooting with the screen, like a smartphone. Being flexible, shooting from awkward positions, being more discreet and blending in with smartphone users...
      The pen with the 20mm is almost as compact as the Fuji but with a selection of small high quality primes available. And image stabilization that is very welcome on such a light body that you have to shoot with stretched arms.

    The camera not only lacks a viewfinder but it lacks the the socket required to fit one (the V-F4 for example). Shooting in sunny conditions is never practical using the screen. I think I'll stick to my old Oly PEN E-PL5 plus a V-F4 viewfinder.

    13:55 If you want 1/8000s on a mechanical shutter, you'll need to stick with the E-P5 or the Pen F. The E-P7 is a downgrade in most ways from the E-P5, while the E-P5 was designed to compete as a prosumer camera with pro specs (1/8000s, 1/320s sync speed, 5.5 stops of IBIS...), the E-P7's shutter is a consumer shutter. The E-P7 does do electronic shutter though, so for non-moving subjects, you can get up to 1/16000s. On moving subjects, you will risk a rolling shutter effect as the read out speed of the E-P7 sensor is too slow.

    • @TL-xw6fh
      @TL-xw6fh ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I use electronic shutter 98% of the time, mainly for street and action photography. I have never noticed any rolling shutter effect at all. The reason is that the MFT sensor size allow a much faster sensor readout compared to FF and APSC, hence a much lower risk of rolling shutter. Try it.

    4000... But what about electronic shutter?

    • @bartjanverhoef
      @bartjanverhoef  ปีที่แล้ว

      The electronical shutter goes up to 1/6000. Gives some extra flexibility, but given that PEN’s had a regular shutter speed of up to 1/8000 10 years ago, I really don’t get why it’s only half of that today.

    • @MichaelGerrard
      @MichaelGerrard ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bartjanverhoef Are you sure the electronic shutter doesn't go to 1/16000? I checked on DPReview and it says that for the E-P7. My GX9 is the same spec, I don't have any trouble.
