  • This Terex 82-30 dozer hadn't been started in quite a while and the weather was a little chilly. It's the first time iv'e heard the sound of a Detroit Diesel engine in person.

    Worked at a GMC truck dealer back in the day. My foreman always told Detroit drivers, when their trucks/tractors where ready to go, and particularly new/rebuilt engines, "Drive it like you hate it, like you're really pissed off". The GO EASY ON IT people need to check their wallet to see if there is an (NI)ASE Master Diesel Mechanic card in there, if not, please go find a video with an old gas engine in it and comment there. Detroits are unique creatures! Still got my card. Right on John, Kyle, and Andreas. (and others)

    • @jimmyhill9843
      @jimmyhill9843 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yeah yeah most 4 cycle engines you wouldn't do that with but its a Detroit it didn't hurt it one bit as long as shes got sufficient oil pressure theres no problem...it would have just sat there and kept puffing white smoke..they build little to no heat at idle. the thing had plenty of oil pressure by the time he revved it up. he was just trying to get her to build a little heat to warm her up lol. there isn't another engine out there that ive yet to run or hear of that can take everyday abuse like a 2 cycle Detroit diesel especially the 71 series. Our old 6v92t we had in the grain truck was a little more temperamental and didn't have quite the reliability as the 6-71 we had prior but the power and torque that that 92 had more than made up for that! she was a real workhouse

    Euclid Operators Handbook: When an engine is first started after it has been allowed to cool, the lubricating oil is thick and cold, and the bearings are partially dry. If the engine is not allowed to warm up before it is put under full load, it can be severely damaged. ALWAYS allow the engine to warm up before bringing it to full speed under full load. By doing this, the lubricating oil will have a chance to reach the bearings before any strain is put on them.

      I seem to notice a word in there that is being over looked. Full Load... what he is doing was not really good for it, but not all together bad for it. Detriots are nutorious for being rather cold blooded and as people before have said, build little to no heat at idle and thus would never start firing completely.

    The first thing I was taught nearly 40 years ago was to run the engine just above idle until it reaches operating temperature. I would have been fired with no questions asked running a cold engine like that.

      Then you never ran a 2 stroke Detroit diesel. He had to get all of the cylinders firing to avoid a number of other problems. BTW - it was only running about 2,000 rpm.

      mech cntr yes. But you don't mix the fuel like a gas 2 stroke. These engines have a blower and are still considered naturally aspirated.

    • @buckhorncortez

      Then you didn't know Terex was GM's company formed after owning the Euclid Corporation that GM purchased in 1953. GM ended up selling Euclid to White under an anti-trust agreement. GM formed Terex to continue in the heavy equipment business. Terex had a plant in Hudson, OH and, at Christmas, used to make a sleigh from a belly dumper, with wheel loaders used as the reindeer. The buckets were put up in the air to simulate the reindeer's heads and the entire display was decorated with lights.
