@BaneOfPhillipBurnell Wrong. You can go through your entire military career without going to war and still be a veteran when you get out. If you're a veteran of a war of any sort you put the name of the war before "veteran". That's why we call WW2 veterans, WW2 veterans and Vietnam war veterans, Vietnam war veterans...
@BaneOfPhillipBurnell Everyone who has ever served in the armed forces with an honourable discharge are legally veterans. But to respect the ones who have actually been in war they just call themselves ex-soldiers.
@@juanchoresultay2704 Voluntarily is the operative word. The men get no choice. How about we reverse it for a decade or two? Women join or go to jail but men get a choice. Does that sound fair?

I am a man who finished military service in Korea. I am a fourth year in reserve and when I was active, I was a soldier in charge of administrative affairs in the unit, and the task was the operation of our division. While serving as a soldier for 21 months in the military, there were many difficulties and hardships, but there were many pleasant and happy memories. In particular, I still can't forget the performance of the military band and the cheers of the juniors who welcome our company when they return to the barracks after marching in the training center. At this moment, I would like to express my gratitude once again to the Korean Armed Forces Soldier who protects my country by dedicating his youth throughout Korea.
How much time do u guys get now for using phone? And whats the time of sleeping and waking up?and others like meals, bath etc! I will be very very gratefull to you if u tell me those in small details...Please... 💜
Imagine being a guy selling street food and seeing a 4-5 million army of trained soldiers who serve much much longer than in the South Korea, invading your country. You'll shit yourself instantly. Rambos exist only im movies
I remember my first weekend in Korea. I’m an American, walking around, admiring all the sights, sounds, and scenery. This elderly man walks up to me, thanked me for my service and welcomed me to Korea. He told me all these stories about his time in the military, all the beautiful places to visit, and really admired Americans in the military for their commitment. In America, you get that sort of treatment when others know you’re military, but you really have to stick out. I obviously stick out, being i was an American, in Korea. But as I sat and talked with him, the more I learned about their history, and just how much their military and security matters to them. They have to be strong because they have no choice. We have the luxury of having a voluntary service. They do not. And while they may not like their mandatory service, I know deep down they understand the rationale for it. And I think it’s just as respectable.
I'm korean, and I'd like to thank you for your service, and US' friendship with my country. I've had an opportunity to do joint training mission with the american forces during my service, and you guys were amazing during training mission, but so cool and down to earth during down time. We exchanged MRE and smoked cigarette together after the mission. Huge respect for who you are, and what you do. Love from south korea.
I am also a Korean guy who is currently serving for the Korean military. ( i am in the air force) I respect the guy in the video because he was in the military in an isolated society Nowadays, we can use phones in a certain period of time and we are going to use phone for 24 hours in less than a week. My military discharge: 234 days left

I think I didn't make my point clear: Normally, around the world, only man does the mandatory military service. And wlgjs678, pointed out: " It's not mandatory for you if you are a woman ". But I answered, " You won't said that, if the woman is from Israel ", which means, Israel is the only country in the world that women have military "mandatory" service. And yes BG, you made it clear, women makes shorter time than man, in Israel. Something else, since Israel had so many war with their so called "brother" Ismael descendants or muslim religion, in case of another future war, to my understanding, Israel's military can call up conscripts of 500,000 people in 24 hours and 1 million in 72 hours.

It's ok, I mean yes, you won't have anyone to coddle you, beatings will be regular but in the end you'll realize its not done on a personal level (unless you are 고문관) it's to beat everyone into shit, it strips you of your ego, identity and hubris. It is to reset everyone at the lowest and build them up together. Would I do my 2 years again? No, but do I regret my training there? No. It made me what I am today and will fill you with confidence. You can do it.
@Nari1102 in Russia we have this kind of mandatory military service but for one year. Regardless, I think they take my life and time away from me and other young people. Additionally, they have nothing to give us instead of the stolen freedom. No one young man treating themselves with respect and not relating their life with the military should get through this. In my case, I postponed the service for 6 months in December. Now I'm studying to evade the army and go abroad, living far from Russia till I turn 27 years old. It's such a blessing to have the law which gives you the right to choose your faith.
Yeah, except this isn't brainwashing as much as it is eye-opening and fact stating from the officials of his nation to the danger and threat posed by their neighbor.
Growing up with stories from my parents, grandparents (from SK to NK who escaped) and their parents, they’re all under the consensus that the current youth doesnt understand the danger posed by NK.

Not all of the training is as intense as this. There are different types of training in military service. You can choose which type you want. If you want the intense, marine level training, you can do that. You can also just do public service, like a police officer.
jonginsbih nope. Unless you receive D point (lvl 4) at your physical test, you need to be in service. Lvl 1-3 requires military service. Lvl 4 is required for public service. Lvl 5. No service required. To receive lvl 4 or 5. You need to have life time injury or disease or needs to be disabled.
Military training hasn't done a whole lot of impact on singers any ways. It's about their ability (which is their voice). So singers and actors are the least affected by it, sometimes they get even more famous. However athletes on the other hand essentially get ruined post military service. They build muscles where it's not needed and lose skills along the way. Hence, many athletes consider military service the end cap of their sports career.
My dad also went through his military service, although his bad eyesight made him become the manager of a golf club owned by the military instead of an actual soldier XD
My bad hearing (mikrotia, one ear is deaf, and served in the FDF) made me in to a scribe? (There's no real translation) And I missed most of the worst training and carrying a 12 kg pkm in the forest for like 8h a day :D They were missing one bmp-2 mechanic and that is where I ended up in the end, laying down on a table and drinking coffee in a prototype maintenance container while watching youtube for 80% of military camp time :D:D Tho doing repairs in the field was quite a chore, and any bmp mechanic can probably agree.
During the LA riots, the Rooftop Koreans became famous for defending their stores from looters. Because of mandatory military service, pretty much every first generation Korean American male in the community was familiar with guns.

I feel like that's one of the bigger problems with the US. The military Enjoys a larger than life folk hero status, that leads to them never being questioned, and any attempt to reign in their excesses is seen as unpatriotic. There's just such a large disconnect between the US military and the citizens it serves.

Having served in the Korean Army for 2 years as well, I can not say military life was fun for me. Like Gene says in the video, the "forcefullness" makes you miserable in the Army. One time I got bullied because I didn't wring the floor-cloth properly. They fucking had certain way to wring the god damn floor-cloth !! (걸레 짜기...) WTF?? 2 years eventually passed, I was grateful that I served the Army. There were some important life lessons that I had learned such as appreciating family/friends, tolerance, patience, etc. But would yo go back to do 2 years more? NO WAY!!!
As I stated previously, the military is an authorized violence group in the country. One out of 100 Koreans is in the military. In a group of 600,000 people, as I agree with you, various & many incidents and accidents could occur. However, the frequency is very low compared to the general society. Now days, a mental desertion or a single sexual misconduct becomes a social issue via all sorts of social media. If the same thing happens in society, it would be buried in the sand. What you described in this reply, I believe, not all abuses you may experience in the military because ROK military has a well constructed report & appeal system. It doesn’t imply we shouldn’t improve the military abuse prevention system. But even the USFK, which is a developed country, has a higher crime rate than ROK military’. If that so, it's not grateful to downgrade and denigrate the military whose royalty to the nation and their honor of protecting the people. Thus, I would like to recall one phrase of the scripts from the “Descendent of the Sun”. “A military uniform is a shroud. When we die for our nation in the nameless front-lines, those sites become our graves and our uniforms turns out our shrouds. We should wear the military uniforms with that determination. Once we do, be honorable at every moment. There is no reason why we shouldn’t be.”
Singapore also has mandatory military service for male citizens. If you have this sort of program in the US the people would go nuts about rights I reckon.
The US does have a similar sort of program. Its called Selective Service (aka the Draft). All male citizens have to sign up at 18. The US military gets its soldiers from volunteers right now, but if the US were ever to go to war, it can activate the Selective Service and it forces men to join the military. The last time this was done was in the Vietnam war and it did cause a lot of people to go nuts. Men refused to sign up and got thrown in prison. There was a big controversy last year over whether women should be forced to sign up for Selective Service too, but it didn't happen. Women can volunteer, but can't be forced in a time of war.
Jonathan Williams "Was"? The draft is still around, it's just not being implemented right now. When WWIII starts, it will once again be bad luck to be in the military.
Siew Qing Wang the US DID have this but because our numbers are so large we have no reason for a draft Although we have selective services meaning all men have to sign up for the draft with they turn 16 or 18 I forget

Maybe you guys are always the first & quickest to criticize East Asians because of the Mughal (i.e., "Mongol" Dynasty) of India which was founded by Mongoloids? The Taj Mahal that so many Indians are so proud of was actually built by the Mongol Mughals. And now China has been a superpower for at least a decade; China is already the second largest economy in the world while India's economy is not even as big as France's lmao! There was something I felt after I served military in Korea. It does not admit my hardship to anyone. And I wasted my youth two years. After the discharge, I had nothing left but physical and mental dormancy and a reserve force training notice.
At least you saved your country and your not born in North Korea or it would be 10 years in worse conditions. North wants to take over South Korea to strip it off all freedoms under Kim Jong Un. You were part of the protection against those that want to destroy the peace on the peninsula.
Basically my time during basic in the US Army. Only reason why this guy complains that it sucks all the time is because there’s no will or motivation to be in the military. Drafts and mandatory service does make the military a living hell and you don’t get the full experience as a volunteer.
Also soldiers are at the bottom of the barrel of society in Confucian culture lol... they don't provide anything economically. Just consume resources, or sometimes take over the government.
Conscription military doesn't really suck so much in my country. A volunteer based military just wouldn't be sufficient to counter our threat so it's not even an option.

Mojack actually, professional gamers, celebrities, etc delay their service time so they can focus on their career while it lasts.. since it’s hard to succeed as progamer or celebrity as you get older. You can postpone your service until the age of 30 if you have valid reasons, but you must go before 30. Korea is good in esports because of fast internet. It's called convention. The contradiction is deep and also involves alternative services for those with health issues (of course men only.) Bonus fact: once, the men who finished serving the military were given a small-but-influential advantage when they applied for civil service jobs. Same here for Singapore. All the males aged 18 and above are required by law to go for 2 years of compulsory military service. It used to be 2 and a half years, but it was reduced during the early 2000 to 2 years. Evading military service is a criminal offence, and you could even have your citizenship revoked if you choose to escape to another country. Basic Military Training (BMT) lasts 10 weeks - unlike five in S. Korea, and yes you are treated as the lowest lifeform in the training camp, worse than the stray dogs in the army camp sometimes. After the 10 weeks, the recruits attain the rank of Private, and deployed to different battalions or units depending on their 'performance' during BMT. The elite performers get identified as potential cadets and to be trained in Officer Cadet School and graduate as officers. The second group of "intermediate" performers go through another 4 months of hell and eventually graduate as 3rd Sergeants (we call them specialists or NCOs). The huge majority end up as just "men" or regular soldiers in the different battalions. I could relate to the gas chambers, because we had to go through that as well. But what I really struggled with was the punishing obstacles course, where you have to scale a series of 7-8 obstacles while in full army gear, SBO and rifle, followed by a 1.5 km run after clearing the obstacles - and you have to meet a certain timing in order to be considered to have "PASSED"!!!
During the LA riots the LAPD abandoned koreatown to burn. Praising the Koreans for defending themselves is fine; but we are forgetting that the LAPD literally blockaded the streets between Koreatown and the rich white areas, such as beverly hills. Despite desperate calls for help, they did nothing. Just “damage control.” Luckily all Korean men go through mandatory 2 years in the military and were prepared.
Thanks Gene. I appreciate the video. I had several Korean students who talked about the 2 years of training in the SK military but I only had vague conceptions of it. This video gives me a good understanding of what that 2 years entailed. I remember my students saying how much they dreaded that 2 years but how the experience turned them into a man.
All the more respect to super famous ppl like BTS for insisting on completing their military service, even though they probably could have gotten exemption due to their music achievements and cultural/financial contributions to their country. Kpop idols are also known to get more harassment and a harder time in the military, as well as invasion of privacy instances (ie. photos taken of them for blackmail or sell to the press). So I'm sure they were dreading it too, but said it was their honor to serve their country.
I also wouldn't like to be forced to go through this mandatory training but I think serving in a military and learning all the self-defence, extraordinary and amazing stuff is really cool, you learn a lot and are prepared for danger and have knowledge about and know a lot more on how to deal with those kind of situations than any common person who hasn't gone through such trainings and preparations. I know it can be forceful, is very tough and hard, you don't have any freedom and this isn't any secret just want to say that in the end it all pays off. I think you should appreciate all the training and preparation you went through.
err... no. It doesn't pay off. Two years of nonstop bs and being treated like shit while making less than $400 a month is something nobody is willing to do.
You don't learn shit in the Korean military. Everybody just stalls out for their time to end and nobody is motivated to actually be productive for the military since there is nothing to gain other than disappointment and injuries.

@@jackie520 Armies are usually less effective in morale when you draft people, because (unsurprisingly) when you force others to go into military and go through basic training (with people screaming at you, telling you what to do, etc.) then yeah a lot of people can get pissed off. Plus, when in combat you wouldn't really trust the drafted soldier to guard your back as much as you would a regular enlistee, since the draftee would usually tend to be far more disloyal to the cause and may desert. That's the gist of it, drafting is controversial in certain nations (like the U.S.A.) although here in Russia we do get drafted lightly if you aren't a useful member of society (i.e. University student, etc.), I signed up voluntarily though.
@@депрессивныйстудент you are correct but sometimes they are even more ineffective if they don't have enough personnel. But conscripts aren't really that bad. It depends. The IDF showed that conscripts can be very effective if you do things right.
@@jackie520 Yeah there are some exceptions, as long as you do a good job getting the general public to your side then you can indeed get a lot done. But nowadays in this interconnected and individualistic world it is much harder as any kind of propaganda can easily be disproven by a Google search in many cases, even the most genuine of causes would have critics go on the Internet and reach a wide audience. However I do definitely agree with you that if done properly, drafting can get pretty good people in. While serving as a soldier for 21 months in the military, there were many difficulties and hardships, but there were many pleasant and happy memories. In particular, I still can't forget the performance of the military band and the cheers of the juniors who welcome our company when they return to the barracks after marching in the training center.

Women can volunteer, but can't be forced in a time of war.
chaosXpert What a shame for the equal rights movement, women should have the rights to be part of the selective service. LMAO
Jonathan Williams "Was"? The draft is still around, it's just not being implemented right now. When WWIII starts, it will once again be bad luck to be in the military.

How was your reserve training like?
At least you saved your country and your not born in North Korea or it would be 10 years in worse conditions. North wants to take over South Korea to strip it off all freedoms under Kim Jong Un.

Basically my time during basic in the US Army. Only reason why this guy complains that it sucks all the time is because there’s no will or motivation to be in the military. Drafts and mandatory service does make the military a living hell and you don’t get the full experience as a volunteer.
You guys also get paid better.

Well if you're gonna force me to do this shit, at least pay me in comparison as a minimum wage ass job.

That's why conscription militaries suck. Volunteer militaries are much better.
Conscription military doesn't really suck so much in my country. A volunteer based military just wouldn't be sufficient to counter our threat so it's not even an option.

The clothes you can buy is limited too
Even hairstyles are limited , there are only around 6 hair styles which men and women can have , if anyone has a different hairstyle, they are arrested
Also , if by any chance you get caught doing something even slightly illegal , you are sent to labour camps ( even children are sent there ) where you have to do hard core labour for months with around 2 bowls of rice a day

Anonymous its also good to stop obesity
Anonymous it's only 2 years at least it's not a full enlistment being 4 years.
err... no. It doesn't pay off. Two years of nonstop bs and being treated like shit while making less than $400 a month is something nobody is willing to do.
No. You never heard of bullying, rape and constant violence in the military?

Also, unrelated to what we're discussing, but whoever deleted my original comment is a censoring dick.

Koreans and Israelis face a real and present threat - Singaporeans, not so much. Training environments are totally different too - extremely unlikely that Singaporeans would train in a snow or desert environment. But yeah, 2 years of our youth given up.

They should be, I don't think they'll get live ammo unless it's for a target range and there's like a dozen staff watching you in those so no one gets shot. They'll probably just be shoved into the Korean military band for their job instead of a combat role. Like why would the SK military pass up that opportunity for its band lol.
@@twohooks3533 Yeah, I agree. I feel like South Korean celebs getting drafted into military service will usually be given administrative jobs, i.e. desk jobs, since them dying would be a big no-no.
@@theobuniel9643 That could be it but since militaries have choirs and bands the obvious thing would be to compel them to be singers for whatever war music the South Korean military has. Even if BTS wanted combat roles for some strange reason the military might deny them anything that isn't musician related.
All of this reminds me of my mandatory service in the Swiss military. Even the thing with the gas we did too. Now I am just even more aware of how cruel it is to be a mandatory solier in a case of actual war.
I am not sure about the gas part
