Why Owning One Duck Is A Bad Idea

  • Keeping just one duck is possible, but it is never ideal. Ducks almost never leave their companions, they will waddle literally everywhere together. Ducks who bond only with humans will be very dependent on that person, and be extremely stressed out every time they are left alone. Ducks have their own way of communicating with body language as well as vocal sounds and a human will simply never understand what they are “trying to say” the way another duck could. For a duck to “think it is a dog” or “think it is a human” just isn’t healthy. From a human perspective a single duck may seem fine, but we have to remember that they can’t actually speak to us and just surviving does not mean they are thriving. Ducks want to do duck things with their companions like swim in mud puddles & eat worms because that is what they do for fun. Wether it’s a human, a dog, or a chicken- a duck will be left confused as to why it’s companions won’t do these things with them. Simply loving an animal does not guarantee their happiness. Nothing can provide the level of happiness for a duck than another duck can. In many cases, ducks who lose their companions will become so sad they starve themselves to death. Of course there are exceptions to this like in the case of disabled ducks where there’s no other choice but to raise them alone- but 99% of the time choosing to raise a single duck is selfish and puts the humans wants over the ducks needs. If you don’t want to raise 2+ pets, get a solitary animal instead.

    Definitely at least 3! We had two hatch and then lost one, which ofc we did not expect to happen, so we currently have a lone duck. She's shacking up with our chickens until spring and will hatch some more.
    I figured that playing ducks on YT for her might make her feel worse when YT isn't around. Though there are some ducks a few doors down she could chat to. She never does though.

    I rescued a single Muscovy duckling - found the others newly hatched and all drowned. Its healthy on a week now and seems happy - we live across from the pond where it was found, but mother is long gone. Feeding it and keeping it safe with a heat lamp and monitored adventures outside. Suggestions? I asked at Tractor supply and they wont sell a single companion.

    Great video! I -personally- won't raise ducks in pairs anymore - a trio is my absolute minimum, because you really do not know what will happen, and lonely ducks are heart-breaking to keep. When Peach first moved inside, he bit me ALL THE TIME. I thought he was just unhappy, but eventually figured out I was his non-feathered "partner" - in his mind!... wish I had known earlier, and knew better ways to make him remember he was a duck, not just my 'house-duck' ❤🦆

    • @DunkinDucks
      @DunkinDucks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You can keep only females, only males, or have a mix of both. But when you mix both genders it is extremely important to have at least 3 females for every 1 male. This is because the males are really rough with the females during mating season, and can injure them very easily if they don’t have enough females to mate with

      Usually the Hens shake themselves off, and go back to eating right next to the drake that just mated them. Duck mateing is about as upsetting for Ducks as taking the last slice of Pizza, assuming you have a good hen/drake ratio and arn't stressing the girls too much.
