Been using a shovel to remove tack strips for years. It's a game changer. Its always fun seeing the puzzled look on clients faces when I bring a shovel inside after removing the carpet and tell them to just watch. The whole room is done in about 3 minutes.
@@LisaNoelleHubbard ME TOO!!! I shoulda known to search TH-cam before grabbing a chisel and mallet! So relieved to find this as I have three walls left in one room plus a whole additional room to do!! Going find my shovel!
Thank you so much! I am a widow and have to do everything for my self. So everything I do is a learn experience. Thank you for the tip with the shovel. My knees and back thank you also! - Janie G.
Just tried this!!! Thank you so much!!! My husband was working with the bar and hammer on his knees. I wanted a better way for him. I watched this, ran to the garage, came back with a shovel, told him scoot out the way, and bam! He said I was his hero! YES!!! For the win! Bless you! 🙏🏽❤️
Just used this removing tack strips from stairs. It worked really well (I used a spade not having a shovel). Glad I found it as it's a lot quicker than a hammer & cold chisel, better leverage, less kneeling etc. Thanks for the video.
I want to say I am a 66 year old women and was worried I would not be able to remove the carpet and carpet tack boards by myself. With the help of both your videos it was a game changer. The shovel made it so much easier and my back and knees thank you as well. The hardest part is cutting and removing the carpet from the house.
That shovel tip just saved me a trip to the hardware store! Genius idea, easily halved the amount of time I would have spent ripping them up the way I was originally doing it. Thanks!
This literally saved me hours. I had maybe gotten 10 ft. in about an hour trying to pull mine up. Yes I had a crow bar, yes I did research of the basics on how to pull up a tack strip. Mine had been imbedded in old tile all way through to the concrete subfloor. Thank you so much for this video! I watch you on a semi frequent basis. Thank you for all the content you put out and thank you for saving so much time on this project with my tenant moving in, in less than two days!
It worked!!! I was struggling with a hammer and crowbar. Found your video and grabbed a shovel. Literally dislodged all of them in my bedroom in minutes!! Thank you!
Thank you so much for the awesome tip to use a shovel. These strips have been the bane of my existence since I have been removing carpet from rooms in my house. I had been hacking away to no avail and had given up. Using your tip, I got rid of all the strips in a room within minutes. I really appreciate your help!
Just finished ripping up the rest of the carpet and tacks that my husband was planning to do. He will be surprised when he gets home when I mention the shovel trick! Thank you!
This is a game changer. I have remove carpet strips with breaker bars. PITA. With the shovel it was soooo much easier. What took two days before, took two hours. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much! Me and my mother re-doing our carpet and The wall strips were the hardest thing to get up and took us a intire day just to get half! Until we used the shovel, we got the other half out in less than five minutes
That Richards lift bar is what I’ve used to remove those cursed things. No matter how careful I am, anytime I remove carpet I get jagged by the porcupine needles that are very sharp. I love your shovel idea. Thanks Shannon!😃
I just searched this on an impulse and I got the tack strip out of my basement concrete floor with a spade in about 5 minutes. Just a 17×20 room I'm switching to lvp. I'm sure knowing the perfectionist in me will now go in with a chisel and remove any residue, but I'm guessing you saved me an hour. Love the northern (Canadian?) accent.😁
Great video... Now I'm going to remove my ugly carpet myself. Next I'm going to install something other than carpet myself. Videos like yours has saved me so much money. Thank you=)
This comes at an opportune time as I will be doing this shortly... likely this weekend. One big difference is that I will be removing a carpet directly over concrete with no subfloor. Hopefully the process works out just as easily as you displayed on your video. Thanks Shannon.
Totally awesome pro tip! I was doing the pry bar and it was hard and slow! Tried your method and no only saved my knees, it saved me hours and hours of work! It's a life pro tip!
Well that makes a lot more sense! I removed carpet from 3 rooms and a hallway earlier this year on my hands and knees with a bar and hammer the entire time. Will remember this trick for next time. Thank you!
This is so great since I already have a shovel in the garage. I thought I would have to go out and by some kind of strip removal tool. Thank you so much!
Wow it works! Actually, I thought of a shovel, but I thought, naw, that would be too easy. I started with a bar, no bueno. So, I got my pneumatic chisel out and that worked better, but still not great. So, I watched your video and got the shovel out. I would say it was twice to three times faster (maybe faster) than the pneumatic chisel. Also, since I'm repainting, I put the shovel between the wall and the strip some of the time (crowded closet for example). Very little damage to the wall. No repairs needed but the paint did get scuffed a little. Then I had to remove some baseboards. Brought out the shovel again, so I didn't have to bend over. Since I'm replacing 4" baseboards with 6" baseboards, there is not damage to repair. Actually, when I was careful, there was no damage (about the same as a bar). If I wanted to go back with 4" baseboards, I could. Thanks for the tip!!!
Love your videos! Even when i think i kinda know everything there is about the topic, i always find small very useful tips in your video. Very much appreciated!
Awesome! I thought that before I watched your channel. I painted a house in 1998 in New Zealand and they asked me how to remove floor tiles. Didn’t know so I said spades
Luckily I did a search before ripping up all the tack strips in my basement. A job that would've killed my knees and back and taken forever, took literally 10 minutes. Thanks for posting for a non flooring guy!
Thanks Shannon- we’ve removed the carpet the other day and were search for tips on removing the nails. After scrambling around the internet for what to call the wood and nail thingies. Found your tutorial on removing these hella sharp tack strips! The shovel technique looks great- much easier in the body. Heading to buy the appropriate long handled pointed shovel and extras. Would you consider flying over to Melbourne for a small job😁 You made it look easy. Thanks again.
I was drinkin my coffee tryin to find ways to easily remove tack strips for my shop, came across your video, went down there in my dang slippers and had the whole perimeter de-tacked in 5 minutes. Worked awesome and barely broke a sweat! Thanks again!
Man ….I thank God you and for this video🙏.I been on my hand and knees with a flathead screwdriver and a hammer ,bout broke my thumb 😂😂 for like 45 mins ,My back was killing me ,but thanks for video.I’ll be at Home Depot getting that shovel asap💪
Got a massive pull-up job tomorrow. Gonna get a shovel like this to see if it'll work. Not going on my hands n knees all day trying to pull these strips out the hard and long way.
Wow. Thanks man! This was a huge help for me since I had basically a whole house to do. I started off with the shovel, and building off of that idea I started using a heavy duty ice scraper called Razorback. That thing just demolished everything ...a lot of nails at the same time. It definitely is more loud and violent than the other methods, but it sure gets the job done quickly. It was starting to hurt my hand ( the one holding the handle) so I just started holding the wood part with both hands. Holy cow! The only negative is that my ears are ringing. I recommend ear protection. Did 3 rooms in less than 15 min (concrete floor)!

The difference of being a pro. No way I could finish a room in 3 minutes! Good work!

Just tested on concrete and it worked with the shovel on most of it. Came to second just take it easy and it should work.
This video is God sent.
I'm almost 70 years old and I appreciate your video.
It worked!!! I was struggling with a hammer and crowbar. Found your video and grabbed a shovel. Literally dislodged all of them in my bedroom in minutes!! Thank you!
Oh my that's so AWESOME!!! Will be doing the same ! :-) I've been dreading having to do it.

This was a great trip, I just pulled some carpet up a few days ago and haven't wanted to go find my pry bar to pull up the tack strips
That Richards lift bar is what I’ve used to remove those cursed things. No matter how careful I am, anytime I remove carpet I get jagged by the porcupine needles that are very sharp. I love your shovel idea. Thanks Shannon!😃
Yes they will get you!
Just did it with a shovel, will never do it the old way again, thanks for the tip, what a time saver
That shovel trick saved me HOURS of time! Thank you!
I want to say you are a genius! The shovel made my project fly! Thank you so much for the suggestion.
I don't know what we would do without you Shannon. Thanks a lot. Very helpfull video.
Thank you!! My hardwood floors are original to my 1920's house and I was totally able to use the shovel method without damaging them.
Came to ask if I could use a shovel on the wood floors. Pry bar took a small chunk out of the floor.
@@nickadeesmile9822 I went very slowly and just eased my way along. I happened to have a shovel in the garage that looked the same.
Started out with the bar method then I found your video. Saved me so much time and saved my knees. Thank you

BRO! I just got hired to remove carpet and I have a jacked up knee injury from basketball and this just saved my knees!!! 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much for this! I was stressing over how hard it was to get the strips up but this made it SO much easier.
You're a genius - that shovel trick is BRILLIANT! Thanks.
Shannon to the rescue as always. Thank you. I was dreading the prybar method again
Thanks for this tip! Life changing!! Much, much faster than the old fashioned hammer and bar method. And way easier on your back too.
This comes at an opportune time as I will be doing this shortly... likely this weekend. One big difference is that I will be removing a carpet directly over concrete with no subfloor. Hopefully the process works out just as easily as you displayed on your video. Thanks Shannon.
the shovel method will not likely work. A bigger bar is usually the best and hit right at the nails to pop them out.
Yes! Thank you for helping an old man.
Half way done, I searched YT vids for help. Thanks for saving my sore back and knees!
OMG, this just made my day and removing 5 rooms a tack strips a breeze. Thank You.
Thank you for this!! I tried it today and it made my job so much easier.
Totally awesome pro tip! I was doing the pry bar and it was hard and slow! Tried your method and no only saved my knees, it saved me hours and hours of work! It's a life pro tip!
Glad it helped!
😅 you sir have just saved my back! I’ve put the job off all week wondering how I’m going to get it done now I’m excited to get on the job!
The shovel trick worked like a charm. Thanks a ton!
It took a minute to catch the flow and get it done quick. Thanks, you're a legend!
Well that makes a lot more sense! I removed carpet from 3 rooms and a hallway earlier this year on my hands and knees with a bar and hammer the entire time. Will remember this trick for next time. Thank you!
Thank you for this tip! I removed al of the tack strip in two rooms and I still can not believe how easy!

Nice. I like the easy way. I used a mattock to remove hardwood flooring last year and it worked great.
Good stuff!
Great tip. Will show this to my husband and son. Thanks for sharing!
Always good to have a sharp spade handy. Also superior in self defense situations!
