Lowell Davis was a terrific, imaginative artist. He was also a very kind man and would spend time to tell stories to visitors.

5 years ago a friend of mine took me up to Red Oak II to take pics, very cool scenic place, didn't realize it was an actual town.

    • @TravelwithaWiseguy

I don’t think it’s an actual “town” but it’s definitely a community of people. Would be cool if they incorporated it into a town!

Like your T-shirt. I went to that drive-in when I was a kid back when they had weekend triple features. I don't know if they still do or not but it was always fun when mom and dad would make popcorn, we'd get drinks and we'd head to the drive-in. I have no idea why drive-ins fell out of favor. What better way to watch a movie than to lie on the hood of your car under the stars and a big screen in front of you. I like that way better than being inside of a stuffy, sticky theater with a bunch of strangers shoulder to shoulder with you.

    • @TravelwithaWiseguy
      @TravelwithaWiseguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It’s still going pretty strong! I usually go to one or two a year there. I used to go to a lot more as a kid in Ohio. I think the sound and overall experience for indoor theaters has gotten so much better that people tend to go that way. But I agree with you about being in a crowded theater. I hate that!

That’s pretty inspirational to have undertaken that job to relocate all of those buildings.
Looking after the next few generations I say.
Also just off 66 so it’s on my list now

It’s such an amazing project he pulled off. And to walk around and think of all that went into it is mind boggling. Very easy to visit right off 66. They have a Facebook page too.

Mr. Davis had a wicked sense of humor- loved it 😂 I've been to Carthage, neat area with beautiful houses but I never knew this was near there. My grandpa is buried in that cemetery you showed. He and my grandma grew up there. Her family owned a dairy farm/general store back during the second world war, which was about the time she met grandpa. They have a picture on the wall at there place of red oak during the war years drawn by another resident.

@@TravelwithaWiseguy no problem man!! I'm a history nerd, and my grandpa always had the best stories about the area and what life was.like back during the depression. He never talked about his time in the army, as many men of his generation were prone to do. It's a beautiful little corner of Missouri.

Lowell was a great guy & a wonderful friend.
Did you get the chance to meet his wife, Rose?
Other friends, that are also Route 66 Roadies, live there.
The place is a time capsule. The history of those buildings is captivating.
Come back for the Lowell Davis Festival she started, last year. Some of the friendly town folks open their homes for tours. The church, school & general store are great photo ops inside & out.

I love that the jail was turned into a "daycare" lol. And of course, every town has to have it's red light district with that "Hooker" house. And in this case they must be in cahoots with the law, being put right next to it.

This was a great visit. As you were walking around, one of the houses had a snowman out front and it's just like the one I have, though it needs a paint job. Funny thing is I can't remember where I got it for sure. It's supposed to light up but it never did. But i sit it out on the porch and it looks through the railing. I had to put a big rock in it to keep it from blowing away. Thank you for this trip as it was cool. Happy trails to you and God bless.
