    I’ve listened to this symphony more times in my life than I care to admit and this is my favorite recording, by far.

      Totally agree. No other performance will beat this one. Jansons was a genius.

    This instrumental drama actually represents an autobiographical fragment in relation with Berlioz's love for Harriet Smithson. It is a great masterpiece and such a grandiose rendition!!

    The instrument between the tuba and trombones is called the bass ophicleide, the actual instrument that Berlioz intended to use for the "Dies Irae" part of the final (Witch's Sabbath) movement. It's like a brass instrument, but has keys and hole openings like a saxophone. The instrument is rarely seen in performance, a second tuba is usually substituted for it.

    must be the greatest symphonie ever written ...

    • @nss4472

      Just a reason for such a definition, please? Why should the Fantastic be more then the 40th of Mozart, the 5th & the 9th of Beethoven, the 5th of Tchaikovsky or Sibelius' Mahler's & Bruckner's ones?

      @@nss4472 Mozart’s 40th is overrated. The 41st is far better-one of the greatest ever. This is also far better (in my opinion of course) than the 40th.

    • @grahamwilson1000
      @grahamwilson1000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nss4472 I think it's an amazing composition. written just 6 years after Beethoven 9, which in itself was considered ground breaking. The greatest is only ever an opion but to me this symphony came out of nowhere, whereas the other great symphonies of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, etc, often were built on similar structures and similar styles, with Beethoven building on the previous two. Mozart was a genius but owed much to CPE Bach and was very close in style to Hadyn. I doubt that Berlioz will ever be seen in the same league as the composers mentioned but this Symphony I believe to be quite remarkable and therefore a contender for any 'greatest' list.

      It's called performing? They aren't robots. And for some of the players yes it is a dance, since there are times especially in the fifth movement when there is literally a dance being performed (the clarinets/woodwind section).
