Didn't realise that a PC mod video would become a metallurgy and chemistry lesson. :-) Nice video, first time here and subscribed. Will be back for more, thanks.
This was a pretty interesting watch! I actually, prior to seeing this, wanted to order myself a set of these and try to anodize just the top-spreaders. (The parts you had platinum coated.) I like the black body, silver top-hat design of the original Dominator Platinum's. I'll likely have it powder coated and bead blasted by a local shop though, as I don't have the tooling access, or know of any reputable shops that would do an aluminum coating to then properly anodize.
Fascinating video. I'm always impressed by the quality of your work and the depth of your knowledge. And jealous. Did I mention that? Two things - what do you think these would look like with a copper finish and can you, at some point, do an autobiography. I'm sure we'd all like to know where your skills came from.
I 2nd this video idea.... I would love to know how you got into Modding and how you got thee skills you did..... ive recently started modding about 2 yrs ago and im currently shopping for a CnC router that I dont have to sell a kidney for
Hi bit-tech! Do you think it's possible to take the top platinum part of the old Dominator Platinums and fit them with the newer models? That was always my dream RAM sticks I just don't like how the new ones look. It looks similar but I'm not sure if theres enough space with the new ones having the LED lights under the platinum bar. What do you think?
If you by any chance let the aluminum be in the solution for too long you might have chance to save them by rinse it in water first and then straight into vinegar since that stops aluminum from degradation.
I actually did mix quite a lot NaOH Solutions in the lab and actually most of the time we do the Water on a measured amount of NaOH. It isn't dangerous at all, you just shouldn't take a bath or sth xD It will heat up anyways because it's kind of a "reaction" taking place when mixing it with water :)
Come on, why didn’t you plug them into a motherboard and show us how they look with the RGB lit up ?! Excellent mod btw. But the whole point of having the dimms is to use them in a build...
I would have thought that the company that is doing the plating would do this as a part of the prep work that is required. If you want to get H2SO4 I suggest looking at a Sealed Lead Acid Batteries.
It's a shame he didn't get the main heat spreaders done as well as the top bits. During this vid I remembered that old limerick: Johnny was a chemist, Johnny is no more, What Johnny thought was H20, Was H2SO4.
Awsome project man!! I love mods that go to the next level. Have you ever tried reverse electrolysis? Super easy with a cheap lab power supply. I haven't tried zink, but I have had some good results deanodizing aluminum.
I bought a whole load of drain unblocker a few years ago, more or less pure sulphuric acid, right over the counter after my plumber told me to. I didn't know it was now illegal. What will the plumbers use, or do they need some sort of permit to buy or use it?
please do add some laser/acid etching and a bit-tech logo. That would be amazing. Then you could put them into a completely custom 'bit-tech' build, complete with custom blocks, reservoir and distro plates :D I hope you can make this happen
@@bittech1 maybe some Ballistix Tactical Tracer? They have RGB as well, so increasing the pretty factor. Or you could make your own shrouding, which would be really cool
What was the cost for that plating? I'm guessing it's a very thin plating because it looks like you can pretty easily see your buffing wheel micro scratches. I'm wondering if a thicker plating might help make those vanish
@@bittech1 oh okay cool. I'd love to get into plating eventually since I can't mill copper myself. I want to copper plate plastic or aluminum since those I can work with. I can't find much info on the entire process of aluminum to copper plating, but I know there are quite a few steps
At first all I could think about was how in thell is a tub of peanut butter going to help in this plating process, some sort of weird chemical reaction that could be used? ..the answer was somewhat of a letdown.
@@Cho-denki-rabbit Kinda late, but hey! Highly-alloyed steel (for example with a lot of chrome [>15%] and some other stuff like sulfur or high carbon or generally non magnetic materials) is often non-magnetic.
Hi I actually did the same process for the Aluminium parts of my black Maximus Hero XII Wifi Motherboard. Worked great. I am wondering tough if I shouldnt apply a thin coat of matt clear coat to prevent it from getting dull or discoloration etc. Does anybody know more about it?
>It's actually quite difficult to buy in the UK now Man... it's not like the people who do this (that I definitely won't name as a group) won't find other ways to deface their many many wives.
Except for the fact that it's caustic and can cause chemical burns and blindness you're right, it's not dangerous at all. In fact, you can prove to us that it isn't dangerous. Go grab a can of oven cleaner and spray the whole can on your face and leave it for 30 minutes.
The Corsair Dominator Platinum Special Edition Torque is as over the top as its name www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/5/11/15625772/corsair-dominator-platinum-special-edition-torque-ridiculous-ram
That turned out awful for the amount of time/money you had in it. A good sannding/buffing and some clear coat would've been very close and cost what 1/10th?
The finished product looks very meh given the prep work involved, like a cheap plastic toy with fake metal plating. Not a knock on you; the work can only be as good as the materials on hand. Hopefully, the plating wasn't too expensive. Buy a nylon spudger so you never have to pry heat spreaders apart with a screwdriver ever again.

Alex, you can get sulphuric acid from the car battery credit to Mr Volt :)
