Schumann composed no ballet music, but his piano cycle of 21 pieces entitled Carnaval, composed between 1833 and 1835, has been seen by many composers a ripe for orchestration. Most of these later composers were Russian, which reflects the Slavic interest in ballet music for its own sake and the success with which the music of a German pianist-composer may be trasferred to the stage.

Having just listened to Wilhelm Kempff's fine interpretation of Carnaval, I couldn't help thinking of Chopin's opinion that Carnaval was 'not music at all'. Chopin's piano music was highly polished and refined, and Schumann's earlier pieces often seem crude and dashed-off, despite their abundance of musical ideas. This orchestration, originally prepared for the Ballets Russes to perform to Fokine's choreography, fleshes out Schumann's thin piano textures beautifully. Schumann really missed his calling as a ballet composer!
