Yep NASCAR didn’t approve him to run. Jason White was good in trucks and would have won a race had he gotten Townley’s rides

John Wes at least hung in there long enough and got a Truck win towards the end and he appeared to have won that fight with Spencer Gallagher. Not many drivers get to say they won a race in one of the three series and had a wrestling match at the track. I mean he at least has a spot next to Cale Yarborough and Donnie and Bobby Allison where they had a physical fight during a race.

My dad worked for JWT when they made Athenian Motorsports. He literally got 2 wins with JWT. Amazing!

I distinctly remember his ratings and driving ability were always a bit too high in the handful of years he was included in Nascar games. I would be challenging him for wins on the game, but me and my dad would make a point to watch the Truck and Busch races to see what he could tear up lmao.

I think we all remember our reactions to John Wes Townleys win. And nobody could be mad. For all of the criticism and jokes that came his way, I can't think of many wins that could have felt sweeter for the driver

This video completely left out the biggest detail as to why he never made that Cup start:
He never even made it a full lap around Pocono in Practice before he crashed the car. They pulled him immediately and was replaced by Jason White, who finished 31st (which was actually ahead of Junior and Kyle Busch). They wouldn't approve Jennifer Jo Cobb to run in Cup, yet decided it was okay to let JWT attempt a start at Pocono and that immediately backfired.
Both were absolutely terrible. Jennifer Jo once wrecked her teammate at Daytona while both had lost the draft on like lap 1 in an xfinity race

Not mention also, JWT got concussion in 2014 after Q crash in Arca. He missed 4 Arca races and 3 truck races. He swapped teams halfway in 14, in trucks. Did sweet music video shot with the identical movie cast

Remember when you had to know how to drive to race in NASCAR? Now all you need is a rich daddy and you've got a guaranteed ride.
nascar is a business...
Nascar and 98% of big time race series are like that nowadays. Either you need a dad with a wealth of Trump and Bezos combined, or a deep budget to land a seat.
Back then, even an ex illegal street racer can go into big racing series with reasonable budget. Some guy in Japan has proven that, he even can go to prestigious races like Le Mans despite used to go street racing.
Bezos' and Trumps' wealth are about 3 orders of magnitude apart.
I usually don't laugh out loud, but I woke up everyone in the house when he "fought" Spencer Gallagher.

I don't think they're necessarily mourning his death. They're mourning the fact his mental state had gotten that bad in a short amount of time after his retirement.

JWT: the complete opposite of Paul Menard: brings the money, just like Paul does, but unlike Paul, tears up equipment
Paul needs to go over to Rick Ware and show them boys how do do it and not be in the damn way all the time. I've never heard anybody say anything bad about Paul, he got out of the way when he needed to and didn't tear up his equipment, something a lot of drivers nowadays need to figure out.
yeah paul is underrated he may not have been the best driver but he was consistent and hardly ever tore up a race car
Menard also managed to pick up more wins. And they were bigger wins.
I thought Paul Menard's daddy was a billionaire.. God Damn - put a Kevin Lepage or Mike Skinner in that equipment and lets see what would happen - put Dick Trickle in equipment Menard's can buy and he would have won 100 races in the Busch and Winston Cup combined - easy - Dale Earnhardt quit driving in Busch because no one could beat him - ,, & that's a fact

15:00 the funniest thing about that fight is, Townley, son of one of the founder of Zaxby’s and Gallagher, son of Maurice Gallagher CEO of Allegiant Airlines, while still a ULLCC, you still have to have money to run an airline. So point is, these are arguably two of the most privileged kids to run in Nascar, and one is a wrecking meme, and the other is why you tell kids “drugs are bad”

I had the privilege of watching him crash in person.
Doesn’t sound like it’s that much of an achievement considering how much he did it, but I thought I’d share.
He’s like Pastor Maldonado, he wrecks a lot, but he is pretty speedy sometimes.
And even notched an underdog win in one of his series (Maldonado Spain 2012 F1, Townley LVMS 2015 NCWTS)
To this day, Maldonado’s only win is still Williams’ last F1 win
Sadly that will be the case for awhile as Williams is near the back of the field
