- Ever break off a hold and didn't know the best way to remove it? I'm sure we're all familiar with bolt extractors, but have you ever tried this first?

This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:

I was a machine mechanic for years always had a left handed drill index and an assortment of extractors and punches, picks and any other tools that would help get a broken bolt out.
One little tiny piece of swarf will stop any broken stud from coming out so keep your air nozzle handy.
I have been looking all over the internet for another means to turning that extractor since i broke two tap wrenches screwed up my vice grips and busted my knuckles this video is all i needed thanks now i will order a set of tap sockets plus i like how u made this vid very informative so u got a sub

Drilling out can be difficult made impossible with a drill from the tool box, they are not hard enough for most screw. You must use a named (no generics) titanium or cobalt steel drill, I got a Milwaukee titanium with the added benefit of going into my impact driver. Spent maybe a half an hour with butter knife drill for maybe an 1/8 of an inch, the impact titanium drill went through it in a minute or 2. My opinion is low level impact with average pressure is better than no impact and max arm pressure.
40yr mechanic here...I have the same set as you... bought long time ago... haven't broken any bits or extractors.... lucky I guess... good set... but here in the lower states might want to try anti-size on them lugnuts... been doing it for yrs... never had any lugs back off.... great info on this subject...

@@fiddykooro3541 when I was younger...they sold anti-siez in a tube like grease tube...I had a jeep cj5....I greased the ujoints and frontend... never replaced a joint or frontend part...an we stayed in the woods... don't know if they still sell it like that anymore... it's also acts as a lube and repellent of water... good stuff... have a good one...

Lucky, or maybe you just know how to use them? In my years as a technician, and restoring things at home, I’ve found that most issues and broken things come from poor use or hack jobs.
My grandpa had a set of left handed drill bits back in the 80's so they are nothing new.

Also if you used a standard right handed drill bit, you run the risk of pushing the bolt in further. Meanwhile your looking to get it out. I gotta get me some of both of those sets. I build machines for a living and deal with sheer bolts and taps monthly.

If the broken tap stuck out above the surface, you could weld on a length of round stock to it and remove the broken piece. Don't forget to chamfer those holes.
Re: corroding lug nuts in winter. I apply a little dab of copper paste every time I change tyres. Apply sparingly and _only_ on the threads (of the bolt/screw, depending on your car). Never had any problems with not being able to loosen them again (using hand tools only!) since. Obviously make sure to torque them correctly and double check after a while.
Technically copper anti- seize is usually only used in high heat areas such as exhaust manifold bolts and such. anyone I've ever known that I've worked with just used regular antiseize on wheel studs/lugnuts. I live in Pgh,Pa and even with the use of antiseize I've had studs break off especially on vehicles that don't have capped lugnuts. granted I use a impact on all lugnuts but when putting them back on i use torque limiting sockets so lugs are not overtorqued. sometimes it's best to try tightening the lugnuts a bit in order to break them free before attempting to backing them off.

Amen Chevy. I own 3 four wheel drive Chevrolets. 1985 1/2 ton, 2005 1 ton, and 2016 3/4 ton plus my wife drives a Chevy Malibu.

Where do you find those bolt extractors with the fingers. I don't have a left hand drill, unfortunately.

What you do is take a propane torch, or heat gun and heat up the metal around the perimeter of the bolt, so the metal will expand and the bolt will come out easier
I have 2 stripped Ford bleeder screws on the rear brakes.
They are rounded off
Can I use one of these and tap them into the hole in the bleeder ?
Can I put the bit into an impact tool or into the drill and will that have enough torque ?

I think the tap extractor would be awesome to have, but they are so expensive, you would have to do a lot of tapping for them to make sense... that is until you break a tap and spend hours trying to remove it, hahaha. Now the bolt extractor, I've used a few times, that and the left handed drill bits... Good luck on your 30 in 30... 2 down(3 if you count the original vlog😉), you got this!!! I guess I lucked out, then! I got a 250usd vise from a prior employer for free cause he didn't wanna put the work in to extract the two busted bolts and get new jaws for it cause one is missing. Couple weeks ago, I walk into a Harbor Freight (a budget hardware store, I only know of it being in the US), grabbed a cheapo set of extractors. The set had the appropriate left-hand twist drills paired with the extractors like in the set you showed. I thought it was normal, but I guess not.
The upcoming model year of the Ford F150 has a very innovative feature that Chevy lacks. It's a heated tailgate.
That way, when you're pushing it down the road in the winter, your hands don't get cold. ;-) =)
Ok I have the metal case but dumb question how do you open it? there's two holes on the side, what do I open it with

Harbor Frieght sells the same product but doesn't have a snap on sticker on it.
In a pinch , a sharp punch is a useful tool to remove sheared off bolts or taps
There are two sets of this drill, left hand and right hand which one should I get 😮
How about reaching deep in a large SUV engine compartment and do the flush snapped off bolt?

I’ve used that set on deck screws. My success rate was less than 50% on a smooth extraction. Some screws wouldn’t budge and I ended up using a hacksaw to remove them. I was disappointed in their overall performance.
These are not intended for decking screws. they are intended for bolts that are broken off in metal, not wood. besides that decking screws are not case hardened like automotive bolts are so they'll more than likely just break off if trying to use a extractor on them. better off just getting a prybar under wood and ripping them out.

Man oh man. Do I dislike bolt extractors. They always break off in the hole for me a are hell to drill through.

i have never had a dodge that runs and dont get me wrong i am not a hater i have just had a lot of bad luck with them

Good video. However when the threads of got rust and fused its a whole different game. I have used lefted handed drill bits, extractors heat and to no avail! All you can do is use spark errosion. But well done to you for info. I have been p;agued all my life with a 50 year old car and in Britain its damp, and salt sprayed and the last mechanic has used inferior bolts and bodged badly. Britian and shoddy workmanship goes hand in hand. The steel although they claim is Sheffield Steel is poor! The tools that the Brits produced are terrible too! Now all made in PRC!

Man, you have a ton of Snap-On tools like I do. idk if you've bought anything from Snap-on in last say 10yrs or so but the quality of all their hand tools (all their tools actually) has taken a serious downfall. it's almost as if the steel used for their tools is made in China as well as all the electric motors inside their drills, impacts and ratchets. I have Snap-on tools that were my grandfather's that are older than me and still work absolutely great whereas tools I've bought in last 10yrs or so just suck. screwdrivers constantly breaking off with simple normal use, sockets cracking under loads they shouldn't be and so on. In the past 5yrs I've upgraded all my cordless lithium tools to Milwaukee (much better quality and much stronger especially 1/2" drive impact guns) and been starting to buy Mac and Matco tools. maybe it's just me but imo Snap-on is no longer the king of tools but I'm going solely off of my experiences in past 10yrs or so and mind you I've been using Snap-on since the day I learned how to work on vehicles 35yrs back when I was 9. Lol
Extractor sets are garbage. They work 10% of the time. Most of the time the bolt is to soft on vehicles that the bit just rounds out
That has not been my experience. They have worked great for me.

Please, bro , donot fan the raging passion fire that I have for tools , my girlfriend cum wife cum better half suggest me to have an affair with another woman rather than gambling my money on hand tools & accessories ! Notwithstanding when any thing needs to be fixed my eve always thinks it is the duty of a devoted husband to fix them in a ziffy , poor me an unpaid & unsung handyman of my home , only my teenaged son appreciates my unrefined efforts !
