    I feel likeness is character if you choose the right bits to recreate. Likeness is most important to me obviously

    • @SinewMinew

      What are the “right bits to recreate” so that likeness is character?

    • @cynthiamarston2208
      @cynthiamarston2208 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SinewMinew its usually just a line here and there that if left out leaves a bland or generic impression. My daughter and i have a faint line over the out side of the top lip creates a quirky effect. There will be lines around the eyes. Sadness or happiness anger or tired etc. there can be flat planes that should not be rounded for certain people. Of course the so called thinking or worry lines between the brow. A slight change in the brow. Highlights or no hilights in eyes for intellegence or mystery or far away. The nose has its bits too. If you dont see them you get a bland generic portrait. Its hard to do beautiful women with make up without looking a little bland unless you can find some of such lines. Nose might not be straight so leave it bent etc….

    • @SinewMinew
      @SinewMinew 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cynthiamarston2208 Thank you for explaining how you interpret likeness akin to character. I guess my confusion is in the difference the judges are drawing between likeness and character and why character is more important or so they say. I think it would be very difficult to convey someone’s character when they just met the person and have only 4 hours to portray them accurately regarding likeness. In that sense, I think likeness is more important an aim.

    • @cynthiamarston2208
      @cynthiamarston2208 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SinewMinew that’s my take. And in my world color doesn’t necessarily mater so a lot can be done regarding that whole area! I know the combination of colors is important but what I mean is I’m so turned off by the flesh tones available. Sure I need to learn it but really it’s just so uninteresting trying to get THAT part of likeness. Comes to mind right off are distinctive nationalities. But ignore their color. Btw there is mainly one judge who seems keen

    • @SinewMinew
      @SinewMinew 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cynthiamarston2208 Do you have to use the standard flesh tones? I’m not sure why you can’t deviate…Paint what colors you see that a person is. Experimenting is a great thing, especially in art. You could stumble upon your own style or even if it’s just a period or series done in a different style of color(s).

      Well, the difficulty would be very volatile depending on where you sit. Some perspectives are much more difficult to draw and the easier places are often the ones that get most attention/praise. Using a Photo kind of evens the chances. But yes, the art in painting portraits is indeed capturing the live person, not a photo. But nowadays, most painters worl with photos because it is impossible to get people to sit for so long usually. What i do not like about many of the praised paintings (less in this round, but I have seen many in this series) do not capture enough likeness. They prefer often artistic "flexing" over really getting the person right. But that is the idea of a portrait.

    “New and fresh” is not only determined by your knowledge of art history but also by understanding the temperature, texture and reverb of an energy and situation of the world in your present environment with time binding everything together which is the job of the artist and not the critic who goes through nothing and is not part of the artist’s experience and dedication conjoining with the artwork at hand. This has been a perilous mistake by one too many present art critics and historians who think they no better than those who actually build and provide the consciousness humanity needs.

      Accuracy in proportion is important if you're going for a realistic image. Some artists are better at spatial transference, and others have to rely on a grid to get a close likeness of the subject. Artists are on same playing field with time constraint, and they have to make use of color, composition, etc. If you want fairness, all need to use same materials, size of canvas, all coming from same school, same age, gender, painting from same angle. Are judges comparing apples to pears to grapefruits to melons? What's proper? I'm not going to judge.
