Love this guy. I've always loved art but some of the deep dives into say the mysteries behind specific paintings and artists or dental records in a London England library clearly demonstrating the impact of sugar in our diet are so enlightening
Waldemar’s Perspective productions are like a combination of travelogue, sociology, psychology, geography, history, and art - all delivered in a style that is entertaining and accessible for the lay person. He gives the viewer the perspective of art history from both the forest and the trees, and as a result makes a strong case for his perspectives on art. It’s how every Art History 101 should be taught.
We can all thank Professor Waldemar Januszczak for the best, most entertaining, and most informative videos on history, culture, and art, anywhere on the Internet! Thank you!
Waldemar is an absolute treasure as a presenter and spokesperson for all historical subjects. The B.B.C. really has a treasure in him. Don't let him get away!!! Lol
On the cross: "This is a rather wonky specimen, which is why I like it so much. It's not quite right...so you just want to hug it." :) I love his quirky humor.
SO GOOD TO SEE ALL THIS HISTORY and I didn't have to attend a class - or 3 or 4 - THANK YOU THIS ALL TAKES MY BREATH AWAY. so grateful. I struggled to get an education- finding I COULD ACTUALLY do art works, naturally - I could've been somebody like Mr. Greenhouse. wow. at 80 - I am enjoyng being shown beauty beyond compare.
Remains my fave Waldemar documentary. Carving his name in runes...straightening his quiff hairstyle...iconic moments. And the man is genuinely extremely interesting.
"Words, letters, inscriptions, they keep appearing in this story, and wherever they appear, they seem to glow with Dark Age urgency." Glow with Dark Age urgency. Out of the darkness appears a glow. A light. A beauty. A wisdom. What an image! What a wordsmith. An artist of words. Waldemar Januszczak, your programme is a piece of art in itself. Thank you for enlightening us in such a delightful manner. This information just flows in without resistance like melted gold.
I find the writing on ancient gravestones deeply touching and proof of the universality of human emotion…some are very funny, some not all complimentary, and some full of such profound loving grief and the terrible ache of an empty place in the those who outlived the deceased.
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.....................
The many daily life and ceremonial artefacts excavated from the burial is of equally extraordinary high standard! The museum is definitely worth visiting, if possible...
Waldemar, I LOVE your unique style, you make me understand a lot about art and sometimes you cheer me up and give me something to laugh about, thank you so much!!!
Break my heart, why don't you! Wonderful! Jeg laengter hjem til Danmark! Thank you Waldemar! For all of us Art History lions, this is red meat! You can never get enough of this.
So good people, why did you give up using DVDs? If you download and burn onto DVD hey presto no ads are downloaded with the content!! Then you can watch and enjoy!
Stood next to the Oseberg Ship you feel a shiver down your spine. The sheer size. It exudes both power and grief simultaneously. Being a burial vessel. Thought to have been for a Viking Queen. 👑
I’ve been watching this for about an hour now, however I’m fairly sure I’ve only seen 10 minutes worth of this documentary the other 50 minutes were ads....no point in watching any further, it’s going to take 3 solid days to finish this documentary
That book he's touching is very likely a faithful copy kept at the monastery for sentimental reasons, and not the real deal. The real deal is probably at the British Library, behind lock and key, where you have to handle it with white gloves.
I really enjoy his documentaries!! I usually don’t care much for European history but he makes it fun and has a wide variety of subjects and I love art… Him and Dr Limpscom make me want to take a course😂👍🏼Keep it coming man I’ll watch … Hello from USA 🇺🇸
if you skip a commercial, then there will more commercial coming up and even the lenght of each commercial is growing up, the more often you skip. if you never skip in the first place, they are almost NO commercials.
Can u guys stop complaining about the ads and just appreciate the beautiful art and effort they put into this doc? Way better than the cap on TV now...unless you want more sjw bullshit??
Well, this was on tv first - it's a BBC production. All the complaining about the adds is annoying, though. I mean, adblock exists, anyway, and it's very flexible. Watching a couple of ads seems fair in return for good content, but if a youtube channel exploits the ad system and puts in too many (like this one), why should the audience bother watching ads from them at all?
October 2021 ... Still appreciate the docs being offered on TH-cam more than what is offered on commercial TV, sadly even PBS. As for the ads, yes there are a lot of them. You can down load an ad-blocker (just remember that some of the individuals downloading these videos get paid a miniscule amount for the inclusion of the ad.).
Making a documentary about the Viking craftsmanship and the Saga without mentioning Iceland is like making a documentary about British pop music saga and not mentioning the Beatles
At 23:49. Yes, I've seen finer jewelry than what the Anglo-Saxons achieved. They're jewels from T'ang China. Just go to museums with T'ang Chinese bling and you will be amazed. Just as impressive as any Anglo-Saxon jewel--extremely intricate, exquisite, with the finest, tiniest details you will ever see in gold, silver and precious stones. T'ang Chinese jewelry was also made at roughly the same time as Anglo-Saxon jewelry, between 600 AD and 800 AD. You will be mighty impressed.
I love forgers! Imagine the skills and knowledge it takes to do that. They know more than the so called 'experts' They are my modern day 'Robin Hoods' in that they steal from the rich and make them look stupid. Unfortunately they don't give to the poor, but I still admire them.
I’ve seen the most recent Viking exhibition (amazing!) but was hoping to hear a bit more about their remarkable political system to help me understand more
I hate ads, and youtube is peppered with them. So, I decided to get premium. And its cheap and ad free, plus the fact that you get the music function, which is just like Spotify. For the price of Spotify, I get two things. Just telling you, I think its worth it. I pay 9.99 per month and there is never an ad.
6:08 "This is what their helmets really looked like." Should be "This is the looking of ONE of their helmets." No demerit for grammar; it is an error in logic not grammar.
Yes indeed it has been a momentous week of all things spacially-related! I haven't missed any of Starships previous three launches, and number four was worth every minute and second. I dare say if Space X keeps up with development and improvements to Starship, we may have the great fortune of seeing a manned/womanned test flight before year's end. And hot diggity-dagnabbit for Boeng finally getting their first manned capsule up to the ISS; what an absolutely cool scene, watching Suni Williams soaring through the airlock! And finally a big ol' Navy Bravo Zulu to the Chinese mission to the Moon! Until next time Marcus...just keep on keeping on!
I think I've learned more from Januszczak in two weeks of watching his documentaries than 4 years of Fine Arts. FANTASTIC!
sad aint it! I can say the same thing! I barely paid attention in college but if he was my art history professor Id would have been enthralled completely
says more about you and your dedication than your study.

You are without doubt one of the best art historians of all time. Your teaching is in itself an artform. Thank you.

Tryin to watch ads but this documentary is in the way
Skip to the end of the video and hit the replay button. Watch the video without ads
It's so annoying. I have to pull the red dot forward just beyond the evil yellow ad dots and then there aren't ads.

I’ve never known any of this … so glad I found this channel and Waldemar.

Waldemar, you are SO interesting, you bring it all to life, thank you

There were Viking mercenaries soldiering as body guards in Constantinople, so what's that about "staying in the harsh north" and all.
Your documentaries are simply fantastic! Always so well expressed and may I say, with a flare of energetic enthusiasm. Thank you
Aachen's cathedral is actually one of my favourites compared to other cathedrals. 💔
But it's really fascinating how sturdy cuttlefish bones are.

Well done. Knowing how Viking I am through genetic research gives me a better appreciation for the intricacy of the art.
Viking is not a DNA thing. Viking is an activity. Danes, Norwegians, and Swedes are the majority of people who went viking.
