I carry chem lights to use for markers when the sun sets. When I shoot an animal right before the sunsets, I snap one and hand it in a tree so I can reference where I shot from to minimize the track.
Finally I found someone who is just like me packing everything in a back pack. My load gets so heavy that my knees barely mange the weight. But when I arrive to my spot, I have everything I need. In addition, I carry double the food /water amount that I need for the day, means if an emergency arises that I stay overnight, I got the food for next day. Thanks for the video.
I’ve been around the hunting industry in one way or another since the late 1980’s. I appreciate more than you know when you tell us you aren’t getting paid for using certain things you use. That tells me that it really does work for you
I added a critical bleed kit after realizing the basic first aid kits can't handle the situation. They are very small so they don't add a lot of weight or take up a lot of room. If hunting solo, either a SPOT or InReach should be a must carry.
I am HOOKED on your channel! My 17 year old son wants us to go on an Elk hunt....well this will be different from Duck but I’m up for the challenge! Thanks for all your hard work and insight.......I was asking all the questions that you are answering in this series and THIS information with your having been on all these hunt is from your decision process. Keep up the great work!!!!! AND the great example! You sir are a gem!

Great Video Randy. I'm a real Gak guy and like to keep some odd things with me. In addition to all your stuff I like to keep several ZipLock bags with me.. never know if you need to keep something dry or even if you want to collect water. Something else that I always did in the military is wrap some 1" gun tape around my knife sheath. Now with the invention of gorilla tape I have upgraded. Always there when you need it. Cordage is another think that I like to have either woven in a bracelet or just bundled in my pack. To each his own. great ideas for sure. Thanks for posting
Wow. All great items for success out there! I go out to a small piece of private land and consider myself well prepared, but there are some things you pointed out here that now I've just gotta have. Thanks, Randy!
If you are going to be walking downhill or on flat terrain for the majority of the day you will want to adjust your trekking poles so that your wrist is at a 90 degree angle. This results in less wrist strain and will take far more weight off your feet. Have a great day!
Some decent gear for sure! I'd recommend an extra pair of socks and some plastic bags you can stick your feet in to waterproof. Wet feet can ruin a good hunt.
Awesome information. I'd just add that a hunter living near sea level should check the function of their lighter at high altitude if they're headed to the mountains. The windproof torch lighter I bought in Texas was useless above 9,000 feet, at a time when it needed to work.
I have never had a basic bic lighter fail me. Even up to 12,000 ft. If it is too windy for the bic, the little fire you’re trying to start doesn’t start much of a chance anyway. You are going to have to shelter it from the wind no matter what you do.
Great info Randy. I learned some good stuff! I am a seasoned backpacker and part time hunter but your info allows me to become a better equipped hunter. Thank You!
Magpul makes a pouch called the Magpul Daka, which is a good pouch similar to what he uses for tags. Can keep small electronics in it too and will keep everything dry.
Try the Quick stiX hiking pole adapters to make your poles into shooting sticks. $45. and very light high impact plastic discs that clamp just below your handles. The absolute lightest way to have shooting sticks. I like my Norwegian HELLE GT hunting knife. It stays sharp a LONG time. Then I re-sharpen it with a small SMITH's sharpener.
Yes on the latex gloves. I’ve gutted hundreds of deer and it can get messy and I’ve never had a problem but on time I helped a guy gut a deer that had the stomach ruptured as well all have done. He had a small cut on his hand and contracted a serious blood infection from it. He lived thru it and survived but someone else might not have. Is it common? Not really but if a $1 pair of gloves could prevent $100,000 in hospital bills from an infection you might wear them just in case.
Hi Randy... I like the items you carry on hunts. I will be making some changes after seeing what you carry. An additional use for the electrical tape is it is great for first aid. It stays in place better than Band-Aids and will stay in place better when wearing gloves etc. I also carry 550 paracord along with bank line and gorilla tape.
Great video Randy..... unfortunatly people get wrapped around the axle with gear thinking it will make them a better hunter/shooter. It is good to see what the other guy is using, but imo getting out for the day with your gear will tell you loads of data about your needs and gear that you can dump. I think you definately hit a lot of the must haves for a day hunt! (Except maybe and energy bar or two!) Thanks for posting!
Hi Randy, one thing I have never seen in any hunting equipment list is a meat cutter glove. A lot of guys wear surgical (latex type), but I will take a meat cutter glove every time. I would much rather protect against a cut, sever or not. These gloves are available on line for about $9.00 a pair. think about how many guys carry stuff to take care of a cut---why not carry a small glove to avoid the cut.
Randy, could you do a new updated bag dump? It’s been years since this was posted and I’m sure you have changed a bit, possibly new GPS etc? Would be awesome for you to run through everything you use with all of the new hunters. Thanks
Hey Randy on your fire starter you might want to try dryer lint that comes out of your dryer it packed down tight and I'll guarantee it'll start any kind of twig fire you want to start and it doesn't take all that much to start it just a little hint there tried if you want to if you don't but just save you a little money God bless you thank you I like this
Gotta love the hunt & the outdoors because the cost $$$ of all this gear would run the final price of a pound of elk steak up around $$ 100. Great shows Randy but good golly, a guy has to be wealthy to do this activity at your level.
Randy Newberg, Hunter which model of the caribou game bags would you recommend for an all around great game bag for elk, deer, antelope, and brown bear?
Joseph Seibel For all around, including elk, I use the Elk Magnum bag set. Weighs a bit more, but worth the extra bags. Not sure if a brown bear hide would fit in the largest elk game bag. You might need to pick up a moose size bag for that hide.
Paul Flores In Wyoming you just have to sign the tag and have it on you, unless you leave the carcass. If I have to make two trips and leave part of the carcass behind, I just roll up the tag tightly, push it into the empty brass shell case, and drop it in an ear.
Hey Randy love your channel tons of great info going to enjoy my first Wyoming antelope hunt this fall. Question I notice yall doing fires, hiking long distance, etc what do you use for scent killer? Thanks and please keep up the great work.
+thuan123red I use a 2'x2' chunk of my old neoprene waders that seemed to have shrunk over the years. ;^) It rolls up to something the size of a partly-used roll of paper towel. Why so large? It allows me to double up on rocky or rooty terrain. Works great!
Hi Randy I really enjoy your videos. I have a question about the mystery ranch packs, I see that they are now made overseas. Is your Metcalf made in Bozeman? Do you know or have you heard if the packs made overseas are just as good? Thanks.
Is it hard frame Backpack better than a Soft Backpack when hiking out with your take? It's good to see the stuff that you take with you Or hunt . I'm certainly gonna look into that scalpel style Blade.
I’ve never hunted a day in my life. I live in Colorado I’m excited to go hunting. I know it will take a while to get ready. How might I get started? I have no idea about anything guns or gear. I previously lived in Florida.
Mrs. Amy Adams go to the range first. No point in wasting ammo and injuring animals without killing them. Learn about whatever you’re hunting and Focus more on camping gear and less on hunting gear for your first few times aswell.
I know this is an older video, but I’m really hoping you see this. I’m curious about what brand of headlamp you recommend...there are so many options out there!
Check out Kuiu. I backpack and hunt. The bag separates from the frame and you carry the game between the frame and the pack. The straps go around the game back and the pack. It keeps the weight close to your back for better balance and it keeps blood out of your backpack.
I would love a list of all the things listed in your video I have watched it about 6 times trying to write it down but my kids keep interrupting me , love the videos keep up the good work you are one of the few I actually subscribe too
Thank you. And thanks for watching. I wish I had the entire list somewhere. We are thinking of doing another one for elk, for archery, for rifle, etc. If we do that, I might give a list in the video description.
Sorry if you've answered this a million times but what is that you use to carry your rifles how they're on the side going under your arm? I'd love to get one but I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks.
@@Fresh_Tracks thanks for your input. I appreciate the knowledge you share in true hunter fashion. Im on my way to my first muzzle loader muley hunt. What is the best advise/tips can you give this newbie. Your videos definitely helped me prep
In serious bear country I wouldn't go anywhere without it. If you can hoof it you can have it, but the spray weighs less than most spare mags and is probably more effective in the bulk of cases. I don't go hiking without something beyond the bear spray, but I think you'd be shocked by the efficacy of the chemicals. I'm not saying leave the gun at home, but I know special ops guys who... choose their words carefully... and they go nowhere without bear spray in Northern WY.
What brand is the windproof lighter? I have tried many butane torch lighters but they are never reliable. I really want to find one that works in the cold, wind, and at high altitudes. If you carry one, it's gotta be reliable!
The only thing I didn't agree with in this video is when Randy talked about needing only one big first aid kit for multiple people. It's only responsible that each person carries a first aid kit. Theres no knowing how many people may get injured. The chances of someone else getting injured compounds if someone is seriously injured. If someone does get injured, then use their kit first. Its basic military/first responder training. I'd also reccomend rope and a tourniquet. When it comes to first aid, it's better to be safe then sorry.
Depends. I would say about half of it, maybe more. I have a local retailer, Sportsmans Warehouse who helps with all the FFL stuff for me and some groups I volunteer for, so if they have it in stock, I try to patronize their business and will buy from them.
NOT TRUE!!!!! Your Brain is much more interesting!!! Tanks for a free sharing of your experience!!!! You help me lots all the way here in Australia...( i use to carry a saw).... 😉
No list. It is a kit I've put together. I actually have two of them; one a day kit and one a multi-day kit. I would suggest buying one of the pre-packaged kits. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for your response. Most (or all) of the prepackaged kits are not very well thought out. I would like to get some ideas for such a multi-day kit from someone who has actually been there. Enjoy watching your videos. I'm learning a lot.
Sidney Patin REI's multi day med kits are very well thought out and packaged. They been updated recently and also have room to add extras to fill in for individual needs. Couple that with a trauma kit from Dark Angel Medical, and a SAM splint, and you're good to go. I like to sub in a RMT (Ratcheting Medical Tourniquet) for any other tourniquets. Recommendation from a retired P.J./Firefighter/EMT. No sense in messing with a windlass when second count.
It’s always best to put your own medical kit together. Many prepackaged kits use inferior pieces to keep the cost down. Start with a quality bag. I have two kits: a small for short excursions and a large for longer trips.
Do you download the maps to your phone? You don't need service if you download the maps to your phone. You can run it in airplane mode and the GPS part of your phone will still work. No service needed.
OruxMaps is a free download. GPS works with or without service. I actually put my phone on airplane mode and it lasts 3-4 days while constantly tracking me. You have to download the off line maps on you phone, but it offers full scale up close gps tracking and navigation on or offline. I'm on the East coast in the the mountains of NC, but we have infinitely thicker timber here...never dropped a gps , and it links up in seconds no matter how far out I am.
Hey Randy, I have been hunting and trying to promote minimalism hunting through my channel. In my channel I present a lot of the same gear, utilizing the same bag for every game season (the only thing that changes is the camo and the firearm) but I have been having luck with the least amount of gear. The stuff you include in your bag is along the same lines as what I carry. I enjoy watching your content while I am at the gym, I learn a lot. Do you have any suggestions on how to store your camo? IE (snow camo, spring turkey, and blaze orange)
Thanks for watching. I wash it, then store in totes that have pine scent wafers in them. Not a scientific method, just the way I've always done it. Good luck this season.
Thanks. I'm not sure. I've ever weighed it. When we add all of our camera and production gear, it weighs more than I want to carry. Thanks for watching.
I carry chem lights to use for markers when the sun sets. When I shoot an animal right before the sunsets, I snap one and hand it in a tree so I can reference where I shot from to minimize the track.
Good idea.
A friend of mines cousin showed me this its a great idea really helps out a bunch marking the animal.
someone pay this man a dime.
No kidding.
Exactly. He can claim nobody pays him anything, but hes got sponsors??? Come on dude

Wow. All great items for success out there! I go out to a small piece of private land and consider myself well prepared, but there are some things you pointed out here that now I've just gotta have. Thanks, Randy!
Trekking poles save lives. I used one for a 1,300ft decline on rocky country with a 80lb pack.
If you are going to be walking downhill or on flat terrain for the majority of the day you will want to adjust your trekking poles so that your wrist is at a 90 degree angle. This results in less wrist strain and will take far more weight off your feet. Have a great day!
Yup. I adjust for uphill and downhill. I will even adjust to different lengths when sidehilling.
Randy Newberg, haha ok good to know Randy!
I think the reason why people love to see your bag dumps is because it's a simple visual snapshot of the 25 years you've been hunting. It's neat.
Thanks for sharing your list, Randy. Nice to hear comments on what stuff weighs - I don't think enough people take that serious enough.
Another great video... I use treking poles too... if they save you from one face plant... well worth it!
Never can get enough of picking Randy’s brain for tips and ideas.
Some decent gear for sure! I'd recommend an extra pair of socks and some plastic bags you can stick your feet in to waterproof. Wet feet can ruin a good hunt.

As a Coloradan I can tell you that were using torches for... many things... at 12,000 and higher, I'd recommend vector.
I have never had a basic bic lighter fail me. Even up to 12,000 ft. If it is too windy for the bic, the little fire you’re trying to start doesn’t start much of a chance anyway. You are going to have to shelter it from the wind no matter what you do.
The bench made altitude is a great knife if u ave to keep buying them still it’s extremely light weight and has an incredible edge
Great info Randy. I learned some good stuff! I am a seasoned backpacker and part time hunter but your info allows me to become a better equipped hunter. Thank You!

Due to time constraints, is significantly faster and easier to learn from what's in your bag than what's in your head lol
I love Mystery Ranch, superb bags. Got a Pintler and love it. Thanks for the uploads
Thanks for watching.
Boy am I glad I found this video! Great great video. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Very helpful.
Thank you for watching. Glad it was useful. Best of luck this season.
Zip tie for your tags works great
Bearspray is good. I carry that and a ruger 44 magnum juuuuuuuust in case I run into a bear who likes spicy food and isn't bothered by the spray. :)
Take your electrical tape (I bring duct tape too!) and wrap around a pole or water bottle, always have it and never need to remember to pack it
Hey Randy on your fire starter you might want to try dryer lint that comes out of your dryer it packed down tight and I'll guarantee it'll start any kind of twig fire you want to start and it doesn't take all that much to start it just a little hint there tried if you want to if you don't but just save you a little money God bless you thank you I like this
Yeah if you don't care if you try that dryer lint let me know
Love to see early season archery hunts bag dump.
Gotta love the hunt & the outdoors because the cost $$$ of all this gear would run the final price of a pound of elk steak up around $$ 100. Great shows Randy but good golly, a guy has to be wealthy to do this activity at your level.
Every time I hear the name Randy I think of the "Trailer Park Boys" and off course our favorite Bubbles. lol
Funny stuff.
Randy Newberg, Hunter what is the difference between the elk magnum pack and the wapiti version?
Joseph Seibel One is a bigger package and one is smaller package, mostly for backpacking.
If someone paid me a cent for every time I said ‘no one pays me a dime’ I’d have one dime 😂
as for water purification checkout polar pure.....and for filtration the sawyer mini.....nice vid...take care.
+secretsquirrell13 I've used LifeStraw and been very happy with it. Probably weighs about 3oz. Great for the emergency water need.
Good video Randy!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great information
Hammer Down Randy
I really liked your chest gear pack!
Zip tie in the ear works too for tag.
I don't use scent killer. For the active hunting we do, it would be a waste of money. Good luck on your antelope hunt.
Bear spray works for black bears also have had to use it be for to keep a bear from climbing into my tree stand with me. Lol
Great video! More of these trip of "how to" videos would be great.
Good tip on the butt pad. I might cut a piece off my sleeping mate.
+thuan123red I use a 2'x2' chunk of my old neoprene waders that seemed to have shrunk over the years. ;^) It rolls up to something the size of a partly-used roll of paper towel. Why so large? It allows me to double up on rocky or rooty terrain. Works great!
Great video...:) :) :) greetings from Croatia
Thanks Randy I've been waiting to see this video lot of good information and you have a lot in your brain brother
Thanks for watching. Glad you find it useful.
Hi Randy I really enjoy your videos. I have a question about the mystery ranch packs, I see that they are now made overseas. Is your Metcalf made in Bozeman? Do you know or have you heard if the packs made overseas are just as good? Thanks.
I have some of both. The new hunting line is made overseas and I have had great luck with both.
Randy....What kind of cold weather gloves are you using? Brand/Etc, I see you wearing the light brown ones in your videos...Thanks
Leather chopper mitts. You can get them at Fox River or LL Bean.
Great vid, thanks. Could you add a list in your notes to the vid?
Is it hard frame Backpack better than a Soft Backpack when hiking out with your take? It's good to see the stuff that you take with you Or hunt . I'm certainly gonna look into that scalpel style Blade.
I prefer internal frame packs.
Excellent information overall and thanks specifically for the info on the game bags. Good stuff!
Scott
Randy, I know you use mystery ranch packs but do you have any experience or thought about the Sitka packs
I don't have any experience with their packs. Lots of experience with their clothes, but not their packs. Sorry.
I’ve never hunted a day in my life. I live in Colorado I’m excited to go hunting. I know it will take a while to get ready. How might I get started? I have no idea about anything guns or gear. I previously lived in Florida.

Hey thanks for all the info. What do you use to hang your rifle off your back pack?
Thanks Randy.
Thank you.
What size pack is the Metcalf? I see it comes in M, L, and XL on sportsman's guide
what do you think of the 3 day assault packs? I'm looking for a hunting pack, I have a hiking pack, but I don't want blood in it lol
I have one, but it is not used for hunting. If looking for a smaller pack for hunting, I would go with a Cabinet or Pintler, most likely a Pintler.
Check out Kuiu. I backpack and hunt. The bag separates from the frame and you carry the game between the frame and the pack. The straps go around the game back and the pack. It keeps the weight close to your back for better balance and it keeps blood out of your backpack.
Also wondering if this set up can be modified for muzzle loader hunting for a day pack
There's a bunch of Gerber Gator knives on Amazon. Which one do you use?
The Vital, The Big Game Vital, and the Gator Premium.
I would love a list of all the things listed in your video I have watched it about 6 times trying to write it down but my kids keep interrupting me , love the videos keep up the good work you are one of the few I actually subscribe too

As always, playing opossum about knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Are you the guy that makes the ranch dressing
+G36Jeff - Nope, not me.
+G36Jeff I think that's Newman's Own. Not Randy Newberg.
Sorry if you've answered this a million times but what is that you use to carry your rifles how they're on the side going under your arm? I'd love to get one but I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks.
Google "Gun Bearer."
Randy Newberg, Hunter just ordered one. Thanks a lot!
Randy Newberg, Hunter what model is your back pack
Hi, could you tell me the model of the Sony Camera you are using? Thanks
its a sony alpha
How would you justify bear spray vs a side arm? Even a 10 mm
By talking to many survivors of bear attacks.

These are Mystery Ranch packs - www.mysteryranch.com/Packs/Hunting
I use the Metcalf and the Marshall.
thanks for your reply Randy I am alwayswatching your videos to learn something new from a great hunter since I've been hunting for only few times>
Randy, great videography. kudos to your camera guys. Question for you... do you re-use the game bags or are they single use?
They are reusable. Wash and rinse, and they'll be ready to go.

I was rural mail carrier for 33 years and hunted for 49great truck acc. almost duplicates my truck
What is the pouch you use for your license, tags and zip ties? Thanks in advance.
I got it from Mystery Ranch. Just a small organizer pouch.
+RandyNewberg,Hunter this this maybe a stupid question but do u order 90% or all of your stuff online?
Depends. I would say about half of it, maybe more. I have a local retailer, Sportsmans Warehouse who helps with all the FFL stuff for me and some groups I volunteer for, so if they have it in stock, I try to patronize their business and will buy from them.
ok thank you
NOT TRUE!!!!!
Your Brain is much more interesting!!! Tanks for a free sharing of your experience!!!! You help me lots all the way here in Australia...( i use to carry a saw).... 😉
Omg ! You did the eye poke
What's in the 1st Aid kit? Is there a list somewhere?
@@tundrafunk7402 REI is NOT your friend if you love hunting and shooting sports.
What is the thing called that you take to sit on?
It's a garnders knee pad. They are about $5 at the local farm and ranch store.
I'm looking for a hand held gps like your Montana 600 do you have any recommendations for any a little more budget friendly?
I don't. Have you thought about the onXmaps APP for your smart phone?
Randy Newberg, Hunter I have it It just sucks when I go out and loose service
Do you download the maps to your phone? You don't need service if you download the maps to your phone. You can run it in airplane mode and the GPS part of your phone will still work. No service needed.
Randy Newberg, Hunter dang I didn't know that thanks
OruxMaps is a free download. GPS works with or without service. I actually put my phone on airplane mode and it lasts 3-4 days while constantly tracking me. You have to download the off line maps on you phone, but it offers full scale up close gps tracking and navigation on or offline. I'm on the East coast in the the mountains of NC, but we have infinitely thicker timber here...never dropped a gps , and it links up in seconds no matter how far out I am.
What was the second knife he used? I got the gerber, but the second one I didn't catch the make/model?
It’s the Gerber gator premium with gut hook 133 dollars off gerber.com
What model of Slik tripods do you use?
This guy’s knowledge way surpasses any gear.
Do you remove the electric tape from the muzzle before firing or leave it on there?
Leave it on.
Thank you for the fast reply!
How did you break the Source bladder?
I wish I could go hunting with you
Randy, what do you recommend for a stove. MSR reactor, jetboil? Thanks
I use Jetboil.
Randy Newberg, Hunter I really like the Optimus Polaris. Multi fuel. Very compact and light weight. works so good
Sorry. Meant to let you know I appreciate what your doing. Awesome videos and no nonsense approach. Thanks
Thanks for watching.
wow, you're set up for the zombie apocalypse. lol. I'll have to add a few little items of those to my pack.
For white tail deer that is?
this was a great video! How much does all that weigh ?
Around 25#, pack included.
Randy Newberg, Hunter oh wow that's lifter than I expected thanks
I'm curious as well, I pack minimal. When hiking 6-10 miles a day in Idaho, you get real careful what you carry all day
what do you where for boots
Randy Newberg, Hunter I appreciate you buddy! another gym night ahead of me. I'll try what you do!
My friend don't forget toilet paper and a small shovel...
Hey love the video. Helped a lot. How much does your entire pack weigh ??
Thanks. I'm not sure. I've ever weighed it. When we add all of our camera and production gear, it weighs more than I want to carry. Thanks for watching.
Going hunting tomorrow wish me luck
How did it go?
Do you ever carry a handgun at all when you're in Grizzly country Randy?
I don't. I'm useless with a handgun, so it only serves as more weight to carry.
